Interesting... I've seen different opinions on this. I thought that it was Sony's version of fake HDR. For the most part, I don't use it, but I have turned it on in HDR games to give them extra contrast and brightness. It can make a nice looking difference in some content.

I should have clarified my statement. I have actually only messed with it being on when gaming as well and noticed a difference. I haven't even considered trying it with any movie watching. Now I am going to have to do that if it can be done. No idea if it is locked out or not. In theory, it should make a difference. I guess I assumed it was on in some form by default.

I think it's on by default for HDR out of the box settings. It can make blooming more apparent in movies, if that's an issue in certain dark scenes. I tried Overwatch last night with it on (SDR game) and it really made that game stand out. It looked so much better with XDR on.

So you can turn it off on an HDR movie if you wanted to? It isn't locked? I will now want to see the difference it makes just for the sake of knowing. Again, just assumed it was on by default no matter what you did as a user.

So after going through a Samsung NU8000 and TCL6, I’ve decided to just be happy and keep the 900F instead of going for another OLED. It is a bit bright in the bedroom though!

One thing I noticed, does this TV auto adjust picture mode to HDR or DV like the other sets do? I haven’t seen the “HDR” or “DV” pop up like I have on the others.

It does switch. It doesn't pop up HDR, but it does pop up Dolby Vision.

I also tried the Vizio P55-F1 and I also tried to go with a TCL 55r617 - last May I got a TCL for the family room that was an open box and never watch it, the kids do. After looking closer at it, I realize now how lucky I was with that one. It is almost perfect, however every other TCL or Vizio I have gotten have massive DSE or banding issues.

The Sony is absolutely perfect, a 55X900F. Compared to the TCL 6, the brightness is amazing and it works better with the Xbox One X. I am not a finger twitch gamer, but I mess with RDR2 and the biggest problem I had for gaming is that all the skies in games make DSE standout. I was surprised the kids hadn't complained, but the TCL I had gotten has no banding and no DSE. I swear it's a unicorn.

However, I watch movies and shows with DV and HDR10 a lot, so the Sony just crushes the TCL for that use anyway.

I just haven't found a single thing wrong with this set.

There is a Dolby Vision notification that you have to enable in the settings. I can't remember off the top of my head how to do it though. I found it in this thread somewhere.

For the Xbox, make sure you have External Inputs set to Enhanced 4K from the Home Settings Menu on the 900F

New models will be baby step's as far as improvements more then likely, you would have to be 6" away from a 49" to enjoy 8k...lol, well probably 2-3 FT......

Assume you are talking about the internal Vudu app? Anytime you have issues after a firmware update (for any device), it's a hassle but a good idea to do a factory reset. Sometimes the firmware update can create conflicts which the reset can address.

Sure you have the "premium". Should be marked on the cable. I only asked because my Monoprice high speed cables look the same and I almost made that mistake.

"X-tended Dynamic Range" was Sony's marketing way of making SDR content look as if HDR, and yes it's on by default for any HDR signal. It does brighten the image some and makes the HDR highlights stand out a little more, but having it on is a personal preference.

I only use XDR on medium for HDR streaming content, Off for HDR 4K Blu-rays.

I use one Hue Bloom behind my 65” 900F and it works great. It’s pointed up at the wall and sits right behind the tv. I have it set to a reddish color and it adds a really nice depth to the tv overall.

I keep seeing all the posts regarding DSE, excessive blooming and other perceived screen defects. Maybe I just got lucky in the screen lottery but my 65” looks absolutely great in all those regards.

Part of it may have to do with the way I always allow my sets to fully acclimate when they are delivered.

My set was delivered back in November in Massachusetts. I bought it from Crutchfield so it shipped in a frigid truck from down south.

Three days prior to taking delivery, I turned off my house humidifier. When the set arrived, I placed the box in my dining room and only opened the top flaps.

24 hours later, I removed the outer cardboard sleeve that makes up the carton but left the plastic bag on the set.

24 hours after that, I removed the plastic bag.

I then waited another 2 days before I even powered it up.

I know this may seem excessive but I was waiting on a delivery from Monoprice of my new hdmi cables so it was no big deal.

I’m no electronics specialist but I understand how condensation works. People have sets delivered that have been stored or shipped in frigid temps and open them right up and plug them in. The cold surfaces of all the circuit boards, processors and chips then instantly attract all the moisture that is in the air. I can’t help but wonder if this is attributing to some of the screen issues we keep hearing about.

Just my two cents...

I just picked up the two pack on Wednesday for my 65", it's perfect. Have them oriented vertically on the back above where each leg attaches. Get a nice even glow around the entire display.

Just tried VUDU and got a similar result. Also some Netflix HDR titles do not trigger the HDR settings (example, Guardians of the Galaxy 2). It seems like the same behaviour as the Youtube app, HDR videos will play but the HDR settings (eg. max brightness) do not engage.

Going to try a factory reset now.

I don’t think Guardians is actually DV. I noticed that it started showing as DV along with Cars 3 a few weeks ago, before I did the update. They play in standard HD as they were previously labeled.

You're right. GOTG 2 is actually 1080P ATMOS on Netflix. I mixed up the ATMOS track with Dolby Vision.

Does the flash lighting in the bottom corners look normal to everyone? Seems excessive and just want to make sure the other 900f owners are not experiencing it. I can still exchange for another.

I just tested -

I upgraded to OREO and I selected a VUDU Movie that I have in Ultra HD "The Patriot" It also has Dolby Vision in that movie.

When I click to watch it - it looks great and I briefly saw the Dolby Vision logo form Sony Pop Up. ( I have that Dolby notification turned on my TV) However as soon as I go to picture adjustments, the movie will pause or freeze and then in the picture adjustment menu it does snot show anything to do with HDR or Dolby Vision as I thought it would

Now this is speculation, however I wonder if its truly running in the background and then when you choose to see picture adjustments on tv it somehow breaks that info, then when you return to play it kicks in again?

I don't remember how this acted before I upgraded but could have sworn that even when I selected the Picture Adjustments it would show that its in HDR or Dolby Vision. However I was on my son's xbox today and did picture adjustments menu without it pausing and it showed the HDR mode when he was playing his game.

Sorry if this does not seem to help but I can confirm with OREO at this time that the TV does not show HDR or Dolby Vision even though the movie content shows in the Vudu app that is streaming Dolby Vision.
