I still haven't been prompted for the update and when I search for it, it tells my firmware is up to date. Oh well.

I'm very close to plugging back my old Roku to it, such a beauty in its simplicity.
Strange on the Recommendations and Sony Shelf. When I get home tonight I'll take a look at what I did to kill Shelf. I do know that Recommendations comes back whenever I hard boot the TV.

Thank you for your answer. Besides the blooming as just listed and the last posts the Sony looks dim with DV and in general HDR. Setting the gamma up to 2 or 3 it helps but the contrast diminishes a lot. I am wondering if the Samsung would have these issues with the HDR10 and no DV though

So did the latest update break ARC? I will avoid it like the plague if updating means that my Onkyo won't turn on automatically when the x900f is power on.

Anything else broken with the update?

I moved this newbie's post in to this thread in hopes someone could help. Due to the software sorting by posting date and time, it's far enough back some of you might miss it, so I'm bumping it below.

That is up to you, TV's are not a one size fits all. You may like the Samsung better and it does not matter what anyone else thinks

Hi Everyone!!!! Ever since I updated the software on my 75X900F last night, I keep getting a very annoying "Not Connected to Internet" pop up on the top right corner about every 5 to 10 minutes! It's driving me nuts! My internet is working normally, I'll be streaming Netflix directly on the TV with no problem, yet I still get the pop up. Anyone else have this issue?

Have you tried asking on the Firestick 4K thread? Are you using Alexia, the prefered voice app for the Firestick?

Thank you for the reply. Of course personal taste always addresses our choices but from an objective point of you what are the evident differences between the Sony x900f and the Samsung Q8? What differences I would experience? Thank you in advance

My 75Z9D did that for about a week, then the notification went away. On my 900F, it never appeared after the set was updated (both TVs) via usb.

There also appears to be some issues with HDR meta-data handshake between internal apps and the TV. HDR in Windows 10 works as intended. The Movies Anywhere app handles the HDR meta-data switching well.

This gives me hope that Sony will address these discrepancies in further updates. It is discouraging that we have to suffer through these issues with a mid-range level Sony product.
Given that Sony has its own profile of Dolby Vision, I wonder if the issues we have been seeing on an app to app basis are related to each app developer keeping up to date with Sony DV which could need updating with each firmware update.

Doing a factory reset after a firmware update is a good practice. Especially if you are experiencing problems like this. It's a pain to have to reset everything up but it can help.

Sony support informed me that they are aware that some owners are having ARC issues after the Oreo update. ARC works fine for me. I'd try a hard reset of both the TV and your AVR. If that doesn't work, try a factory reset for each as well.

DV is really pretty bad. I am tempted to return the tv hoping that HDR works better with a Samsung Q8. I am little in crisis because I am not Samsung fan

This appears to be a internal app specific issue.

I confirmed that these apps work with HDR:
Movies Anywhere
You-Tube
Netflix via Windows 10
VLC using an external hard drive

hello on what i saw in review and research on it . samsung will have better black , less blooming , more color pop and sharper image , con little worst uniformity in general , sony more accurate neutral color , more detail shadow pallet color , smooth image less sharp , con black bar and blooming that can be fix with bias lightening , try to go see them in person if you can .

Thank you for the reply. The only way to see the two tv is at the store where they play misleading demos. They both look great....I opted for the Sony also because of the Double Vision but actually it is quite disappointing. Is the HDR on Samsung handled better? And what about the upscaling? I am sorry if I am sorry if I am demanding but I have still two days to return the Sony and potentially switching to the Samsung. Thank you for your patience

A follow up to my earlier post. It must be a Firestick specific issue. I no longer use Amazon FireTV devices, however....

I can speak into my Roku Stick+ microphone saying "turn on Tubi TV " and the Sony powers on and my Roku starts my Tubi channel on Roku, including switching to the correct HDMI port.

Again try the FireTV thread.

I turned off updates to my 75x900f after the very 1st update with Dolbyvision after the set was released.
I heard stories how the summer update killed picture quality on the 900e and now this newest Oreo update for the F appears to be wrecking ARC etc. The summer one was a joke "expanded features" yeah not risking my set quality for that.

I am happy with mine and its been pretty flawless.
I agree with some reviewers that some of these updates decontent the set or are not vetted out enough.

Its too bad sony doesnt give you a choice of firmware updates to update with seemingly.
But agree with other posters you should factory reset after firmware. Just copy your settings ahead of time and re-enter later.

Sure do! Black and white tube tv's didn't have any problems back in the 1960's. Then again, you only had four to six channels and the biggest worry was your "VHF valve tuner" - especially if it started getting squishy and not locking in place on the channel.

Trivia Question: When/What was the last tv show in black & white?

Spoiler!

Color issues? Calibration? Late 1960 color tv's had wonderful "tint" and "color" dials. I was a master at dialing in just the right tint and color for our household. Ah, progress.

I've actually seen an improvement (knock, knock) with ARC after the update. No dropouts with Amazon with ARC for me - - at least right now.

Which Samsung and what size are you looking at? The Q8FN? Here is the Rtngs comparison, and as dwhitton mentioned they each have their pros and cons.

https://www.rtings.com/tv/tools/comp...g-q8fn/585/598

If you do dump the Sony, I would suggest the Vizio PQuantum 65". I had it before my Sony 900F, it's excellent but limited to 65 inches.

I have a Sony x900f but I am quite disappointed about the Double Vision performance, too dim. The alternative would be a Q8FN same size 55. The latter is still priced $400 more than the Sony at Best Buy. I am still in time to return my Sony and paying $400 more I may get the Samsung. It seems quite a lot for me though. Any suggestions?
