Scheduled the delivery to show up this Thursday.

What is the checklist of things I need to do before I sign off with the delivery person

1) Obviously check the box itself for damage
2) Open the box and look at the TV itself for any visual damage.
3) I am hoping to be able to plug it in without doing more than just lift up the box while keeping the TV on the bottom
4) I have to go watch the video on how to put the "legs" on it.

Thanks

Mark

Interesting. I'll have to check the version on my unit. It was not bad for a while but the ARC problem has been worse in the last few days.

I still have a couple of issues with ARC and my Yamaha RX-V685L when I turn on both of them:
  1. TV doesn't always switch to external speakers. When this happens, I can turn the AVR off and on.
  2. TV has no sound from inputs (but system sounds work). When this happens, I can turn the TV off and on.

I'm not really sure if the latest update made things worse since I didn't have the AVR too long before the Oreo updates, but it seems like the second issue is new. It hasn't bothered me enough yet to experiment with different startup sequences. Overall, I do prefer the latest update (fixes to DTS, YouTube HDR, and HDR overlays).

I often have the second issue, but I['m not sure if the system sounds come from the TV or my sound system. I use a Logitech universal remote so it's just easier to restart everything, but I'll try just rebooting the TV to see if that works

There are a few ways to do this, it is best to ask your vendor of choice these questions as some require all of this done before the driver leaves or you have 24 hours to 7 days to check it out. All depends on how the insurance is written.

To do the factory reset you have to access HOME button

Select: Settings.
Select: Storage & reset.
Select: Factory reset.
Select: Erase everything.
Select: Yes.

As for the brightness of the UI, if you pull up "Picture Settings" from any input the UI still looks the same. If you select the HOME button to access the UI menu it's definitely brighter, and it looks as if the HDR settings gets engaged untill you choose an App or another function from the main menu. Before the factory reset the HOME menu was dim as was any app menu you selected.
I have 65X900F, I reset with the same steps the but all UI (non video) is still dim.

Yep. It doesn't help to improve Netflix and Youtube main screen brightness.

Dolby Vision looks fine IMO on "My" X900F, watching Neflix "Our Planet" is just unreal. The X950G added Dolby Vision Night and Day presets for your viewing enviornment, but from What I have seen on the 65" 950G, DV looks pretty much the same, but YMMV.

Looks like I just did.

And we just met with a contractor today about remodeling in our condo, such that now that TV gets to sit in its box for 4-5 months. ;(

I wonder if they will add this feature for the 900f. Maybe someone would know?

But either way, my DV looks just fine. So does HDR. I almost returned the 900f for the 950G but was told by two different people it wasn't worth the hassle. It's not that big of an upgrade.

I totally agree “Our Planet” looks fantastic as do numerous DV presentations. Sure some are dark, I’m looking at you “Ozark”, but that is a directors choice.

Some DV looks great. Others, not so much. And that is often not the TV but the content as created.

I don't believe we will have the light/dark DV option on the 900F. That came with the Z9F and then the 950G unless someone knows something I don't.
I don't think director intended so we don't see the black details not be visible on a bright daylight outdoor scenes when there is no back light problem. I have to increase black level from 50 to 55 in order to make Ozark watchable from Apple TV in DV.

it wasn't worth the hassle specially spending 1K more for 85'' 950G. I just increased the black level for Ozark to 55.

I wonder what setting is different between Dolby Vision Night and Day presets so we can manually do it in 900F

You are using an external device for the render. Your complaint, then, is either that the Apple TV isn't producing a good DV source for that show or that the original DV was done poorly (which I believe is more the case as they intended it to be 'dark') from the studio. My point was that the television isn't necessarily the issue.

Just got delivery this morning. Everything looks fantastic. I have to keep it in the box though because of our decision this week to start renovations of our place, which will take 4-5 months, and therefore we have two rent a place to stay at for 4-5 months and didn't want to take it out of the box.

The box looked in great shape, even got to turn the TV on and look at the first setup screen to see if I had any pixel issues, but it all looked very clean.

It would be easy enough to compare since there is an internal Netflix App with Dolby Vision on the Sony. What are your thoughts @DrA ?

I think the Calman auto-calibration on the 950G allows for 20pt rolling calibration and CMS adjustments vs 10pt and no CMS on the 900F. This difference may make it worth the extra cost for some.

I compared with my internal Netflix app and my Fire Stick and they looked exactly the same to me. And by that I mean they both looked great. I compared Lost in Space, Black Mirror, and Our Planet. Our Planet was very bright, but that's how it's supposed to be. Black Mirror seemed to be dark and bright in the right spots, or director intended spots. Lost in Space looked really good as well. The colors were really nice. I think it's a bit dark, but in a room with no light I think it's pretty much perfect.

HDR looks great on everything. I've been watching The Tick and it looks fantastic in HDR.

Also, gaming looks really good in HDR. Although one game, Forza 4 seemed a little bland in HDR for some reason. Wildlands, PES 19, Madden, NBA 2K, and Hitman all looks amazing in HDR. The pitch in PES is so amazing looking.

I'm pretty happy with this TV.

Different HDR movies are graded with different peak luminance, typically 2000 to 4000nit for major blockbusters, and 1000nit for lesser stuff. The higher the peak luminance the metadata contains, the lower (dimmer) the gamma of the middle and lows will get pushed, to make room for all that extra highlight detail/data. When calibrating HDR, you sort of have to pick a NIT value and you are stuck with that...it's good that Sony put in a variable HDR dark/bright capability.

The Tick is pretty good for testing high contrast bright HDR.

On Forza Horizon 4, 10 bit 4:2:2 4K 60Hz Ycbcr HDR, with my calibrated HDR10 luminance curve settings, the sliders in Forza 4 say I can get 1200nit on the slider with a gamma of 50 on the in game slider. I paint my favorite cars bare polished aluminum because it looks rad in HDR. Look for me on Forza 4 name "RMG News"

Just wanted to let you know I used all of your settings for HDR and SDR. Including the 10-point calibration. I do notice a difference for the better compared to the factory settings. Especially in HDR and DV.

Isn't The Tick Amazon only???

What button do you press to see if your TV is using HDR10 or Dolby Vision? I can only see if Amazon shows an HDR icon when I pause it.

I actually had the same question about what to check for when it arrives. Mine is arriving Tuesday. You can see all the pixels on the setup screen then? Anything else to look out for?

Not the very bottom part because I have to keep it in the box, because I have to move it while our condo gets remodeled. But what I did see, the setup screen has gray colors and I don't recall it being any plain black area that might just be off.

Thanks

You can press Action menu>Picture adjustments and it should show on the right top side whether it's in HDR or Dolby Vision mode.

And yes, The Tick is an Prime Video original.

Here’s a question for you.

As I was flipping through the channels the other day, I stopped on the NASCAR race. I noticed that throughout the race, every time a car went into the turn, a dark shaded box or shadow would appear in front of the car(s). I will have to try and take a picture of it this weekend to replicate but I guess where I’m going with this is, is this a local dimming issue that I need to adjust that would have caused that?

Anyone has any issues with ARC only returning 3 channels in STRAIGHT mode when watching 5.1 content on Netflix and other TV apps?
I think it appeared after the latest update (the one that dims the UI)...

Edit: solved, TV audio output was set to PCM for some reason...
