You'll notice it more in a dark room. Also when you view off center.

I do have a question about the harmony remote. I've seen several people say they got the picture mode button to work with their harmony remote. I have the harmony 700 and I added the picture mode button but it does nothing. I haven't updated the TV to the newest firmware yet. How did others get this to work? Are you manually programming the button from a different sony remote?
I believe the 6.6510 Firmware broke the Picture Mode command, as it used to work as loaded from the Logitech database, I posted about it above and other places. I think it’s a Sony issue and that not only Harmony, but other Universal remotes using the Picture Mode command (or something sending the same code) are also broken, but I have no evidence in that no one using another remote has confirmed that.

I opened a ticket with Sony and I would encourage others to do the same, I also posted a link for Sony support above. I further opened a ticket with Logitech, but suspect there’s nothing they can do if the TV no longer accepts the command.

I first mention the problem in this post, and other Harmony users confirm in posts that follow.

Firmware v6.6520 has been released in the EU. Reportedly, they fixed the UI contrast. I hope they didn't just revert back to the super-bright HDR subtitles/menus, though.

Do you recall how long it was between the EU and USA firmware rollouts on the last version (6.6510)?

Edit: Never mind, looked it up on the thread history. It was about a week.

Thanks! This explains why the picture changed so drastically when DolbyVision kicked in on Netflix. Appreciate your response

I just purchased this TV (65") and discovered the dark corners which is really annoying my viewing experience.

I heard its a problem with FALD technology. Headed back to the show room to compare and found that mine seems more severe. is it the viewing condition?

The 950g model have less dark corners (my imagination?)

should i replace it and cross my fingers?

After getting my calibration fairly sorted and getting Live Channels working with my Silicondust cable and OTA I am quite pleased overall with the 900f. The image coming off my Sheid to the Sony gave too much pink to the flesh tones. I suspect the Sheid's mapping of 709 to BT2020 throws the Sony color off. Weird, because my Samsung had dead on skin tones connected to the Sheild. Playing directly on the 900f reduces scaling and colorspace. Nice step up in picture quality.

My 85" has very minimal darkening. Nothing like yours for what it is worth.

***How does it look with content? Is it that noticeable? And, your settings? On a blank, white screen, it's certainly more noticeable and looks a little darker than my 75" set but again, what's it like with normal viewing? I see mine when I focus on it but I rarely focus on it! That would require staring at one of the four edges of the TV without seeing anything else. If you don't like it - - maybe you can swap it out for the 950G if that works better for you?

Yeah I read the new software broke it so I didn't update. I'm currently on 6.5850. Not sure why it wont work for me. It looks like 6.6520 was just released today so maybe there is a fix included.

Well, it's just one day this time for v6.6520: https://www.sony.com/electronics/sup...loads/00016214

The strange thing is the US release notes don't mention the UI issue. I did a USB install and it does look like they reverted the UI back to how it was before (which unfortunately means the Action Menu and subtitles are a bit too bright in HDR/DV content).

(In case anyone's interested, the "Picture Mode" button on Harmony remotes doesn't work in this release either.)

That’s interesting and you may have helped track down the issue. I believe I skipped 6.5850 because my auto and manual over-the-wire update wasn’t working, it wasn’t until I stated reading about 6.6510 here that I checked to see I hadn’t and couldn’t update, so I downloaded and updated with USB. At that point I noticed Picture Mode no longer worked, but it could have first been broken in 6.5850 and that just continued with 6.6510.

This is all speculation based on what I’ve experienced and other Harmony users like you confirming the problem. Maybe 6.6520 will fix it, but when I reported it to Sony they didn’t acknowledge the problem or promise it would be fixed. I also have a case open with Logitech, but expect them to punt it back to Sony.

So I’d still encourage you and anyone missing the command to open a case with Sony, and if anyone has a working Picture Mode command let us know what firmware you’re on.

Washed Out HDR

Has anyone experience a washed out HDR picture, especially with Disney releases (disc not streaming)? Ever since the Oreo update the HDR is very dull looking. I have a 900e that does not have this issue.

Firmware 6.6520

This morning I downloaded and installed Firmware 6.6520. The notes say that only a WiFi issue was fixed, but if you’ve been reading along I’ve been trying to get the Picture Mode command back on my Harmony remote. Sorry to say this FW seems to have no affect on that problem.

Some complained about dim menus on the Home screen with 6.6510, I noticed it though it didn’t bother me. To me the Home screen menus now look brighter, though as I said it’s not something I focused on; if that was a complaint of yours, you might try 6.6520. I had to download and do a USB install, across the wire didn’t work for me, whether due to region, or because it hasn’t worked for me since last summer.

The install went smoothly and I haven’t noticed any other changes, though I haven’t looked at much yet.

Edit: Another thought, could not using WiFi be keeping my across-the-wire updates from working? Anyone getting updates that way with a hard wired network connection?

The network updates shouldn't be impacted by using wireless or ethernet. In order to get network updates, you need to have automatic download enabled. You also have to accept the terms of one of the smart services (I think it was Sony Smart Services, but not sure as I have it disabled). Also keep in mind that the network updates are rolled out in phases (possibly geographically), if your TV misses the update when its available to you then it is no longer available via network even if you check manually. You would then have to wait for the next rollout or download it manually via USB.

Screen uniformity (DSE) is usually less noticeable in real content, vs the blank screens in your first post.

Thanks. I’m aware of the regional rollout, and I’ve accepted the agreement as last summer I did do one manually over the wire (possibly with WiFi on), but I’ve never had Auto on, so maybe I missed the ‘window of opportunity’ you describe.

Original firmware from the factory is going to depend on your build date of course. Does your Youtube app display HDR properly? Or do you care?

Why would someone buy a 900f if they can buy a 940e for $800 less? Gamers?

Better motion, newer model (which means it is likely to get firmware updates further into the future)

Just an fyi. I was at bestbuy in Canada today. Both sales people I spoke to said that the 850 is going to be discontinued at the end of this year and that this week they were informed the 900 will be manufactured through next year. It was the number one selling screen last year and to date this year its exceeding last year's units sold.
