Cool OREO roll-out speed / availability

Hi forumers!

SPOILER: I am well-aware that this is just nagging, but hey, sometimes it helps too

According to Sony Website, Oreo automatic update was resumed on 22nd May. Soon it'll have it's 3rd month "birthday" of non-appearance in Finland/Europe as OTA (sorry, no fanfare nor cake served here). Well to me, at least. I have a Yamaha AVR attached to my XF9005 and currently the combo works as expected (just about 2-3 unexpected reboots in ~8 months of use). I contacted SONY Finland support about the roll-out and they replied stating "We don't know exactly the time-frame, but typically it takes 6-10 weeks after availability". Yes I understand - it's staged rollout - but what I do not is about their SW release process SPEED & quality (just Google and you shall be enlightened) overall.

To me it seems that TV business ain't nearly as lucrative as mobile business (well, SONY ain't shining there either) and perhaps they thought "Let's have someone else (Google) do the sw for tellies" - it's pretty clear that they (SONY) don't have proper resources to deliver timely updates and frequent updates. I ain't no sw developer, but hey, we are "awaiting" to get a sw release based on something that was released in AUG-2017... - whoa

My home is connected mainly to Google/Android ecosystem, that was (just) one of the reasons picking an Android TV too. The models / manufacturers I evaluated in late 2018 included most of the "top-dogs" and SONY (with XF9005) had an excellent price-quality tag at the time of my purchase (DEC-2018) - so yes, they got me hooked.

Now you as, why I rant about not getting an OLD Oreo update to my telly? Well, there are some good things in that update that I would like to have. I am also aware that I could download the update to a USB stick and perform the update. But due hpw my TV has been "sink installed" to a wall, I can't access the USB port (without lifting the telly off the wall), so that's not an option. And I also prefer the OTA update

And don't get me wrong, I enjoy my TV quality in terms of picture and overall viewing experience.

</endofrant>

Have a great and entertaining day!

I have the latest update and it still isn’t near as fast as it should be. I’m almost thinking of buying a fire 4K stick due to this and plus since DV is so dark on the internal app too.
From my experience this TV does not cope well with 5Ghz. I don't have speed issues like you do, but it takes ages to connect to a 5ghz network. And after it does, it seems to disconnect almost every night, while the TV is off. So when I turn it on in the morning, it takes 2-3 minutes for starting - I guess it is reconnecting to the network in the background. So I ended up switching to 2.4Ghz. No issues since.

I have a high-end router and it's in the same room as the TV, about 3 meters away. All my other devices - PS4, A/V receiver, laptop, mobile phones - work flawlessly with the 5Ghz network. So it really is the TV...

You are correct with your assessment in regards to the X900F and 5G wifi connection. It doesn't drop the connection, but more like goes into "Sleep mode" after the tv has been turned off. My 900f has done that since I got it, even after a few firmware updates. Not an issue unless I turned the tv off while logged into 1 of the streaming apps, then next morning turn the tv on and it says no network connection available. it reconnects in less than a minute and the world spins on.

Yeah, but before it go alive and say "no wifi connection", it stays dead for about a minute after powering on through the remote No power light, nothing. And then it suddenly starts. At least mine does that...Pretty annoying

Hello folks,

Yesterday evening, out of nowhere, colored lines starting showing at the bottom of the TV.
It happens on all HDMI inputs, regardless of the device (Apple TV, Xbox One X, PS4 Pro) or the cables used.
When I go to the Home menu or say play Netflix on the TV directly, no lines however.

Has anyone seen this before?

Hope it is nothing permanent. Unplug the TV, wait for more than 3 minutes, plug it back in and see if the lines go away.

Hey guys. I like running 3840x1620 ocasionally but I can only do it either centred or stretched to the whole screen. Is it possible to move it when it's in ultra-wide to the bottom of the screen so I only have a black bar on top? Would be fantastic & make it even better as giant ultra-wide monitor of sorts.

After almost 2 weeks with the 75" 900F, I will report that I am extremely happy with this TV. I upgraded from a 65" Sony 810C, which had a nice picture for it's day but there is NO comparison to the 900F. Last night I watched a 1080P stream of Dumbo off of Kodi. I don't know if the 900F upscales Kodi streams, but I have to tell you it was just a gorgeous picture! From what I'm reading on here, these won't be around forever, so if you're on the fence go buy one!

You need to know what version you’re on to know what might change (hit the help button). There have been a fair number of comments as each FW is released. I’ve been disappointed we lost the Picture Mode command with universal remotes a couple FWs back (it probably won’t get fixed), but I haven’t had any other negative effects going forward to the current version. There have been some things like dark Home page menus, that were ‘broken’ in some versions and fixed in later revisions.

Thank you for your response.I use a Harmony Elite remote for the TV. What do you mean you lost the picture mode command? The software version that I am on is PKG6.5635.0180NAA

I believe, 5635 is one of the last FW where "Picture Mode" works, specifically with Harmony remotes, but probably other universals as well. It allows you to go directly to the Sony's picture adjustment settings -- which to me is more importantly the place you can see if HDR & Dolby Vision are active. Without it you must hit "Action Menu", scroll down several entries and hit enter, not the end of the world but less convenient. Through a couple avenues, I've come to the opinion it's not getting fixed, in essence the Sony no longer accepts the command.

If you have a Harmony remote you should have the Picture Mode command, and I think it should work with 5635, you can test it.

Here's what I know about Picture Mode and FW revisions:
FW ???? (Summer 2018) Yes, PM worked (reported here, I confirmed)
FW 6.562x (09/2018) Yes, PM worked! (I confirmed)
FW 6.5635 (??/2018) Yes, PM worked! (reported here)
FW 6.5830 (01/2019) ?? PM (didn’t see any mentions)
FW 6.5850 (04/2019) No PM (reported here)
FW 6.6510 (05/2019) No PM (reported here, I confirmed)
FW 6.6520 (07/2019) No PM (reported here, I confirmed)

Why would you need to see if HDR & Dolby Vision are active, when they will always be active if the content has them?

Well, nice for you to be in a perfect world When you're using multiple sources with HLG, HDR10, DV, (and plain old SDR), running through multiple cables, a processor, testing new Firmware in various components, it's nice to have troubleshooting tools at your fingertips. I guess I would say that I like choices, and when I take advantage of them I don't like to see them go away.

Fair enough. I was genuinely asking by the way, not sarcastically
I just ordered a Harmony remote, so wanted to know how affected would I be from this issue. If it's just about checking the HDR mode - I'm good.

You can't test Picture Mode with a Sony remote, it doesn't have it, and once you update it's likely you'll never have it again. I would only ask that you test it first (with your Harmony) to confirm for my records that it does work with that firmware. Many are happy on older FW versions, I might have stayed if I knew I would lose PM, but I'm OCD enough that I usually want to be on the latest. Other than that feature, I don't know of a downside to upgrading, nor do I know of a "Must Have" feature you'll get if you do. Someone else might have a different opinion.

As I understand it, Sony now considers Picture Mode a stolen feature from an older model that they no longer support on the 900F. I've let them know I'd like it back, but short of a groundswell of support I doubt it will happen.

I think others like Picture Mode because it also lets you easily get to the Picture Settings so you can change modes from Standard to Cinema Home, Pro, Sports, or whatever; as well as making adjustments to brightness and the like. I sometimes change those settings, but mostly use it for troubleshooting.

Yes, but I have separate picture modes set per input, so once set I very rarely touch these. So I should be fine with my new Harmony remote even with this bug. Cheers.

Yes it does work with my Elite when I go into the device itself.
I can get to this option also with the tv remote. Action menu, picture adjustments and its there.
If I update do I lose this option completely? Sorry if I sound a little dense. I’m always paranoid updating my electronics.

The only thing that stops working is the Picture Mode command on the device, the Action Menu > Picture Adjustments method continues to work, and is the Sony approved way to get there.

Thanks for confirming that PM still works with 5635.

I’ve had a 900F for almost a year, the only update I did was when I first turned it on a offered an update. Everything works as it should, ARC, CEC, etc. I don’t use the onboard apps very often so if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Spoiler!

Or ... if it’s fixed, don’t break it!

Had already tried that but hadn't work.
Left it unplugged for the night and when I tried in the morning, it was back to normal... phew!

Thanks for the tip!

Is anyone else going thru so many batteries?

No. And if it was I'm sure it wouldn't be functioning properly.

Only way to fix it is by turning of the receiver and turning it back on. Or sometimes turning off everything and turning it back on.

It is running PKG6.6520.0252NAA. Wondering if downloading and installing the update again manually will help? anyone know of a way to go back to the previous version, or what it was and where I can download it from?

Thanks
So ARC still isn't fixed. I guess I'm going to have to stay on the version of android it had when I bought it in June of last year

ARC was fixed a couple of firmwares ago. Just because one owner is having issues (which could possibly be resolved with a hard power reset) doesn't mean it's broken. If you want any of the newer features (including Oreo which speeds up overall menu performance), I wouldn't hold off on updating.

See the list of changes in the release notes below:
