NBC is one of the worst offenders for that--it's called macroblocking.

Why they are still manufacturing the 900F is a mystery with the 950G being out. Never the less I feel you are right

In the realm of TVs it certainly is a mystery as to why in the world they are still producing the 900F!

Companies usually move on and make their stuff obsolete!!!

With that said....I am buying a 900F in January once I get into my new house!

😎It's just life, dude. We are all gonna die sometime--Might as well try and have a kickass time while we're still here.😜

You can force the mode of the Apple TV to output 4K HDR, while also setting "Match Dynamic Range" to "off" - you should still have HDR displayed for applicable content, just no DV. I've briefly tested and verified this with Netflix content via the ATV (Altered Carbon, Ozarks, Bird Box). No DV logo, but the source advises it's being displayed in HDR. Also note, I have subscribed to the Beta OSes on this ATV.

My 75x900F is relatively new (received mid last week), and I have had a minimal amount of time to "play" with it, but my initial observations are below. The TV is in the basement - the lighting is controlled; the previous set here was a 65x930E. I do not have an objective way to measure light output / color / etc. The below comments are all my subjective takes.
  • Dolby Vision via Netflix does appear too dark in certain scenes. This appears to be true over the ATV as well as the native app. Conversely, there are some very, very bright scenes that look outstanding in DV (Altered Carbon for one; there's a new comedy special in DV that also looks very good (Iliza)). For the dark scenes, switching to 4K SDR shows a rather large difference in brightness (Altered Carbon looks fantastic in 4K SDR for the handful of scenes I watched).
  • Streamed movies via iTunes / Vudu look great, in both DV / HDR. Perhaps a little dim, but nothing that screams at me like the Netflix DV content.
  • I've watched snippets of Mission Impossible: Fallout via the Sony x700; it looked great as well.
The x930E is in a different room now, with much more light (natural and artificial); I've run a couple of similar type "tests" on the X930E and, FWIW, DV via Netflix and the ATV exhibits similar phenomenon (dark/dim scenes; though - subjectively - not as dark as the 900F).

Wow. That really helped. Philosophically I don't like this solution, but pragmatically this fixes my one great frustration with my setup. Just brought the Mandalorian back up and it looks much brighter. The darkening was maddening, no matter what some sort of purist would say.

Check for app and firmware updates, it was updated to support HDR several firmwares ago.

Not ideal, but workable for me as well. From what I gather though - and several in this thread have posted similarly - the Mandalorian DV dimness is more of a source issue (how DV was mastered) vs anything to do with the X900F specifically. In other words, the Mandalorian is probably not a great candidate for showing off DV content (on this set or any other).

From what I can tell, much of what is out there has DV problems in how it was mastered. But at the end of the day, the rest of the people around me won't say "why is it so dark". Maybe folks can figure out DV and then we can all enjoy it at some point.

Right now the whole HDR scene is a hot mess.

Is HDR10+ going anywhere? Does anyone actually use HLG? So many providers are slapping crap into a DV packet and calling it a day. DV has different profiles that sometimes requires a tv to have the same maker blu-ray player. Samsung won't support DV. Apple TV won't strip the DV layer for tvs that aren't DV compatible, but will instead convert it using their own technique into an HDR10 signal that loses highlight details.

It's a mess. Too many chefs in the HDR kitchen right now.

So this might be a dumb question, but I'm trying to test playing video content off my HTPC, and having a hell of a time determining if the TV is correctly switching into 24fps mode. Is there some way to determine this in the UI?

DirecTV uses HLG on their 4K channels and it generally looks good, some programming very good. This is where it’s meant to be used, in bandwidth limited situations, I think we’ll see more of it over time, but maybe it will just be relegated to satellite until (if) ATSC 3.0 ever raises its head, or cable starts delivering 4K material.

Interesting development. I bought a x900f about 3 weeks ago...build date August 2019.
8 days later the price dropped 300.00 for black friday week. The store would NOT adjust price so I ordered another one.
I set them both up side by side....same settings both on same OS ---surprisingly...the new TV (build date September 2019)
looked a little brighter and a little crisper. Even Dolby vision looked better. I wonder if I just got a better panel or Sony started doing some updates to the newer builds. Anyway, overall pretty happy.

This makes me happy with the one I picked. There were two boxes in the store, and one had a shipping label from 8/2019 on it and the other had one from 10/2019. I picked the October one because it was newer. DV looks great on it.

I would say most people who have this TV, who've watched DV and who haven't really been following along....

Scroll back a few pages and this is a common theme. Stuff rendered too darkly, people expecting dark scenes to sear their eyeballs, etc etc etc...

DV on this TV, with the way Sony implemented it, is dark. Unless the director's intent was for it to be dark like The Mandalourian (or however that's spelt....) and then it's dark. Too dark....

Seggers

Sony XBR-85X900F, Oppo 203 UHD, Denon X6300H, Emotiva UPA5 (triggered), Wharfedale Pacific Evo 40s, CS, 10s, PC DX12 sub, Def Tech A60 Atmos tops, the internet and a Nvidia Shield. There's also a Wii, but we don't talk about that...

See my above post. Check the build date on your TV...it does seem to matter. Also...you can buy a ROKU which only uses HDR if you want brighter. That looks great too....but different than DV.

I recently bought the x900f. Called xf9005 in Europe but the same set.

I did this because i have a x900e and I really liked that.

First thing i did was to update to latest firmware PKG6.6545.0255EUA. So I dont know how it behaved on stock firmware.

But it suffers from thoose "microstutters" every now and then when scene changes or parning and such. The exact same problems as the x900e had when it was released. But a firmware update on the x900e eventually fixed that.

The firmware used on my x900e is PKG6.6520.0252EUA and that works just fine.

Anyone else having the same issues with their x900f? I have cinema mode and have done some color and brightness adjustment. And also have the smoothest motion setting. Since I like it to be very smooth and this works on x900e.

Would be so happy to be able to downgrade firmware but as I understand that aint possible.

Ive contacted Sony to see what they say about it.

One would think the x1 extreme processor would be alot better and that theese issues would have been fixed with this tv.

Any help is much appreciated.

Has anyone had this issue with their panels? I just got my tv delivered today and noticed the right 1/4 of the screen is a darker shade. I sent a couple pictures to Sony but is the panel lottery bad with these as well?

All LCD screens struggle with single color uniformity. You could exchange it and get a better panel, or the replacement could be worse. The real test is if yours shows up during normal content.

Is there a way to tell the build date from the box (serial #)? I don't see any shipping labels. My 75X900F was delivered today, but I won't be able to take the screen out of the box until I get some help.
