Why not just run everything through the avr, then into arc on tv. Why even use optical?
Your right, i connected everything to my receiver, i use HDMI ARC on TV to ARC on my receiver. Instead of my PC connected to my TV it's connected also to my receiver.
I may not even have purchase a Roku Ultra or Fire Stick 4K, i can just use my Mouse to use on the Internet and my TV. My mouse and keyboard are wired using an extension so that i can use my Home Theater set up without leaving my sofa.
I don't see any need for buying another device. Thanks.

Kind of.. I can use an external app box (aka ATV or Roku or Box of choice) however the native app in Sony I unwatchable as it defaults to DV and is too dark even when the limited setting choice is altered. I will post some screen comparisons to demonstrate.

I would just like to have to only push one button instead of two !

I currently use my Mouse/Sony remote, and the TV is perfect, but am i missing something here?

Ports 1&4 will certainly support 2160/60 from you Roku Ultra/Fire Stick 4K as those devices do not use 4:4:4 color depth for streaming services. Give it a try and you will see 2160/6 at 4:2:2 and 4:2:0 work.

Don't buy an AppleTV or FireTV stick if you want to avoid Dolby Vision. Only the Rokus do HDR10 not Dolby Vision. Roku was too cheap to purchase a DV license. I own all three boxes and personally prefer DV.

I actually had a question about ports 1&4 on this tv. I am thinking about buying one over the X950G as it will save a bit of $ and they seem to be very similar tvs. Will ports 1&4 support UHD HDR? I currently only have 2 HDR sources, my fire tv stick 4k and my ps4 pro. But might end up getting a 4k Blu Ray player down the road. I would love the X950G but the extra $ would be nice to save as well. I have read some people have been able to get UHD HDR on all 4 ports and the full bandwith only plays a role for PC's with higher refresh rates over 60 fps. Not sure if this is true or not which is why I am asking here.

Yes, all 4 ports will support UHD HDR. The limitation on ports 1&4 is bandwidth, they are limited to 10.2gbps where ports 2&3 support upto 18gbps.

I recommend the following port assignment:
Port 1/4 -- streaming devices like Roku/AppleTV/Fire Stick as these devices do not normally send 2160/4K content at 60fps and 4:4:4 subsampling, 4:2:2 and 4:2:0 subsampling use less bandwidth and is what streaming devices normally support.
Port 3 -- AVR/soundbar as you may want ARC support to them
Port 2 -- 4K Bluray player

YMMV and good luck

Current system:
Sony 75X900e/Sony STR-DN-1080, CS-3/CS-8/CS5
Sony X800 4K blu-ray player/Dish Hopper3
Roku 4 Premier/Sony PS-4

Thank you for that information. So I don't have a sound bar at the moment but might plan on getting one in the future. So if I do end up getting a sound bar and a 4k Bluray player, how would you recommend the PS4 be hooked up for 4K HDR gaming? Sorry for the dumb question but not sure how most soundbars work. Do they have a passthrough on them that the PS4 pro would plug into and get passed into the TV using that port? Or would that port specifically be taken up for the soundbar?

Also I have seen some recent posts about dark DV has that been improved at all? is it a big difference from the X900F to the X950G in DV performance? I am trying to justify saving some money on the X900F as it fits right where I would want it to in my budget right now.

But wondering if the X950 has any real compelling reason to spend the extra $? I will be using a PS4 Pro, Xbox One OG, and different streaming services. No cable or satellite.

I've read about the slow UI of this tv but I have an Amazon fire stick 4k so wouldn't be using the built in apps anyway unless there was some reason that they looked better than the fire stick 4k? I also heard about the bad speakers but planning on getting a sound bar eventually. So I'm thinking the savings on the x900 is worth it unless there is any major picture quality improvements.
I would get the 900F unless the 950G was basically the same price especially in 55" and 65"........ 950G in the 75" and 85" have the wide viewing which some may be interested in.

Yeah it would be a 65" that I am looking at. I just have seen some people complain about dark DV performance on the 900F. But I guess that is something I can buy the tv and see how I like it. I am a Best Buy Elite member so I have a 30 day return window at Best Buy which is most likely where I will be buying it from.

Also is the poor DV performance on this tv that I see people complaining about just from Netflix and the built in app? Would it be better from my Fire Stick 4K? DV support was one of the main things I wanted in a TV so want to make sure that there isn't a huge issue with this sets implementation of it outside of the built in apps that I will most likely never use.

Make sure any soundbar that you get has pass-through HDMI ports and you will be good. An additional benefit to pass-through ports is you don't have to rely on ARC to get sound from the devices directly connected to your soundbar or AVR.

The issue with the 900f is that it defaults to DV and is quite dark as Sony presets were not ( in my opinion) well developed for the average home use.

By using an external box for your apps as opposed to Sony tv native app you do get better lighter image reproduction. Or you can avoid having the DV stream as devices like Roku don’t support it.

Personally I like the image streamed through the ATV 4k with settings set at SDR 4k with no frame rate matching on the ATV. The Sony then defaults to HDR which looks stunning.

It’s down to personal preference at the end of the day so I would recommend you try it and see. Compare and contrast !

Dark programmes or films such as Disney+ mandalorian or the recent release of Aladdin are good tests. If the dark scenes are watchable to you then great.

I also have another question. Is there a list of 4K Blu Ray players that support DV on the X900F. I know the Sony X700 but are there any others? I would like to find a player that you don't have to enable and disable DV on. I know some will automatically detect it.

DV in the 900f is fine... just adjusting your Gama and contrast enhancer and it will be bright enough, trust me I’m coming from a super bright Samsung TV. I wouldn’t buy the 950g due to the very low Gama and color volume, colors just don’t pop like in the 900f specially on HDR and DV.

I think i'll hold off on the Roku/Fire Stick devices and go back to using ARC and HDMI 2 on the 900F/PC simply because i don't really need it. My 5.1 Home Theater set up in my living room is perfect. I can actually use my Mouse for both TV and Internet, although i prefer streaming with my Sony remote and use the mouse for the Internet.
My living room is mostly dark all day/night........and using the 55" Sony 900F as my display is a wonder to behold, and i calibrated the TV very close to Rtings (i actually like the SOE, don't kill me)...LOL.

The Panasonic UB820 is the only DV player under $1K that auto switches DV and is compatible with Sony's Dolby Vision.

I have this tv coming in tommorow. From what I'm seeing, it's best to just stream from the internal aps? Do I need to emable anything in the settings for hdr to look its best? Im going to be exclusively streaming on this tv. Thanks.

What apps will you be using? Vudu is good for movies in my experience, but I have had issues with the Amazon Video app, so I use my Xbox One X for that. Overall, I think the apps are fine, but anything that is Dolby Vision will be played in Dolby Vision with no option for HDR10. Some find that DV can be too dark and prefer HDR10. This is where a cheap Roku that supports HDR10 might come in handy.

Just to chime in some more with DV. I've previously been using DV via internal apps (Netflix and Disney+) as well as Apple TV 4k. I always thought DV has been very bright for Netflix, but it was dim for Disney. However, it's been reported that the dimness of Disney+ was from mastering, not the tv.

I just subscribed to Apple TV+ and have been watching For All Mankind. DV through the Apple TV box is extremely bright. In fact, I'd say it may even be too bright at times.

Take this information anyway you wish. They are my most recent findings. BTW, I use the Cinema Pro settings with gamma 0.

Edit: gamma = -1 for SDR, = 0 for DV.

I just bought a 5 to 1 HDMI switch box. Now, I have my main HDMI plugged into port 2 and to the HDMI out on the switch.

I have my bell fibe, ps4 pro and Xbox 360 plugged into the switch.

My question is, will I lose any calibration settings, picture quality since it's in the switch? Will it affect my inout lag and so on.

Thank you

just trying to make sure I can get this set as dialed in as my limitations will allow! lol

Searched and didn’t see this question, so apologies if it’s been asked already.

Just had an 85” delivered. Setting it up now and everything appears fine EXCEPT when I try to enable Dolby Vision on my Apple 4K TV. Then the screen goes green with white lettering. Is there a setting on the Sony I’m missing? Replacing a Vizio PX that developed a line of dead pixels in less than a month, which looks great now compared to the green screen!

So any ideas?

You have to use input 2or 3 on the tv and have a high speed hdmi cable.

I just got a bonus email for three free movies for Privilege IMAX 4K. I started playing Spider-Man far from home and it buffers and stops every few seconds. My Netflix app shows me having about 175mb down I had no problem with Disney plus 4k or any other content.

Is there an issue?

You have to use input 2or 3 on the tv and have a high speed hdmi cable.

Yeah, already done and have. Had zero Dolby Vision problems with the Vizio. So it’s not my equipment. Something is not set right or I have a bad panel with the Sony.

Any other thoughts?

I'm going to be placing my order for 65" X900F at Best Buy tonight and picking it up on Saturday. Looking forward to the upgrade in size from my current 50".
