This is how it looks on my Q8. The blueish tint on his head is a product of my camera. It looks much better live. I had to close the blinds to darkened the room but you can see their reflection on his back. Comparing these pic and yours, it clearly shows the Q8 with its only 40 zones, performs much better than the Q7 under the same situation.

I wonder how much Dolby charges a manufacturer per TV?

Why am I reading in some product descriptions and reviews that the 2018 Q8FN has a "built-in" Steam Link? Is that actually the case because I can't find any trace of it on the TV?

It does. If you have the Smart Remote, just do a Bixby search for Steam Link and it'll take you straight to the app store to download it.

Got the 75" Q8FN. Aggressive dimming out of the box on darker content on things like "Batman" or "Stranger Things".

TV is awesome with brighter content.

I keep messing with Gamma or backlight for darker stuff.

I was politely informed on another blog that what I'm seeing is actually over dimming, not Black Crush, but a form of ABL caused by poor backlight control.

Is there any settings people have tried or any rumors of a firmware update in the works?

Can't find it anywhere in the app store myself or using Bixby.

This might be a silly question but is it because I'm in Canada? Not sure if I'm limited in my app choices because of that...

EDIT: Googled it and yep, Canada. God damnit. Also found how to change region and there it is after changing to US.

UPDATE!

So I stream all content off a 4k device.
My 4k device was set to "HDR", after switching to "SDR" the dimming issues seemed to improve drastically if not completely.

So regular HDR seems to be the issue.

I also used the Amazon application built into the tv to see HDR+ in action and it looked much better then regular HDR.
My 4k streaming device does not support HDR+ so I can only see it through the TV app.

I thought even the edge lit Q7F QLED looked great last year and now it's just more uniform picture that's cleaner yet with slightly better blacks from an already great design.

I know one knock on the Q8fn is only 40 zones, however I don't think you need a million zones to improve what they were already able to with edge lit last year.

My two cents..

Still playing with settings.

Used Modernwize settings on YouTube as a starting point.

I honestly just matched everything he had for movie, standard, dynamic, HDR.... I'm not done messing with it but it was just a starting point. Want to see some dark action movies and live sports and mess with it. Probably be a few days before I have a chance

I have heard the dimming algorithm is different, aside from many more zones, and $3k for the 75"...

I figure in 2 years we will be talking micro LED so I figured I would save the $3k for now and be happy...

Has there been any issues with this setup?
Noticing that when going into AppleTV settings with this tv, that if I select Chroma 4:2:2 it doesn't like it, so defaults back to 4:2:0. is there a setting I am missing somewhere? My cables are Tera Grand - 6 FT Premium HDMI Certified 2.0 Cable, 4K Ultra HD 2160P at 60Hz, HDMI 2.0b Dolby Vision HDR, 18 Gbps 4:4:4 Chroma UHD Aluminum Housing 3D
  • Are both cables 6 ft?
  • Is the AppleTV connected to the Denon on the HDMI input port that is closest to the HDMI Output port for the display (this is suggested by Denon as a fix). Have you tried different cables?
  • Is the Denon set to Bypass so it doesn't alter the signal in any way?
  • Is the Denon set to Enhanced HDMI?

I always appreciate their no nonsense technical reviews - hoping he has a 65 or 75” on hand....just asked him to confirm sizing.

Love to hear from all of you experts.

Do you have an xbox? if you do then you would greatly benefit from VRR and Fresync tech thats available in the Q8FN. I have both a ps4 and an xbox one, I have the xbox connect direclty to the tv and my ps4 to my reciever.

Wow, the Black Friday in July sale has me thinking about the 75: Q8FN. My wife wants the 82" Q6FN (yes my wife wants the bigger set) but the better contrast and glare handling of the Q8FN and the sale has me leaning towards the smaller 75" Q8FN vice the 82" Q6FN. The one thing that could change that is of course the 82" Q8FN. Does anyone know when this will be available?

With a 13 foot viewing distance, is 82" too big? I actually have it mocked up in our living room and my wife loves the 82" size.

Thanks

Crutchfield (and many others) have distance to set size tables. For 4K TV 85" is 7.1-10.6'. 75": 6.3' - 9.4'. I had a 65" at about 10' which was fine. Ordered the 75" Q8 as a replacement.

Thanks. A lot of these viewing suggestions come from a resolution preservative.. ie... how close until pixel size is a problem. I was more curious about even taking in the full screen at 13" away of an 82" screen. We currently have a 65" set in that place and yes we can go bigger. I've heard some people getting motion sickness from sitting too close to a really big screen. Maybe 13" is still not close enough to cause those problems. My wife would go bigger if she could (and we could afford it).

How does the Q8 handle reflections? We have a lot of windows and lights and I am very sensitive to glare. Seeing the Q8 is Best Buy is a glare nightmare. But in a home setting, do you think the Q8 handles glare better than the larger Q6?

If price were a wash, would you go with the 75" Q8 or the larger 82" Q6?

Thanks

I also have windows but I don't have the Q8 yet to see how it does. I thought all of Samsungs QLED series had the same anti-reflective coating though. Many people here advocate size over quality but that is something only you can decide. My previous TV was a 65" (Samsung KS9000, that a service rep broke) so I would take the 75 Q8 as that is a step up in both size and quality for me. Try to see both the Q6 and Q8 side by side.
