Debating if I should contact Samsung about the poor Gray Uniformity on my 75” Q8FN.

I bought the TV online in early September and two weeks later one of the dimming zones went out. Samsung support was awesome and they come out and replaced the entire panel with a new one! But after using it for a few weeks I noticed this panel is way worse with gray uniformity and it’s very noticeable & distracting in games.

Like RDR2 it’s noticable most on the sky, and as I pan the camera, the clouds move but not these dark spots on the tv don’t. It’s really frustrating me given how much I paid for the tv, but I’m not sure they’d do anything.

i can't open the screenshots currently but are you talking about the opening scene where she's wearing the helmet? it's been awhile since i've watched it but taking into account the whole thing looks like a film school project i think that particular scene/film has literal scratch film like artifacts (local dimming probably adds it's own horror to it though). did you check other scenes in that movie, especially the ones that take place in the isolated black space, how do they look like straight on (you'll always see artifacts at angles)? what about something like Interstellar?

edit: just saw the screenshots. yep, it's that scene. can you take the pics in a complete darkness and straight on of the scenes in the "black" room? make sure your camera is not overexposing. speaking of Netflix, i think there's something wrong with their HDR encodes in general. dimming has bizarre behavior on my Q7 too with any of their HDR titles, regardless the quality of the production. it definitely doesn't look right and borderline broken sometimes since it can't keep up with the scenes. it only happens on Netflix.

if it bothers you and constantly draws attention to itself, contact them. DSE/banding is a no starter for me and I'll reject anything that shows it during regular content but that's just me.

This thread is crushing me! I've been wanting a 65" Q8F for quite a while. I was pretty set on it and close to going with it. Now all the panel clouding/black issues have me re-thinking this and considering just getting the Q6F with its new pricing.

I currently have an older Samsung LN52B750 that is the real 240hz panel. You can see I do not upgrade to the latest and greatest often, but I prefer to buy something higher (not highest) quality that I will be happy with for a long time.

This would be 75% TV and 25% gaming via PS4 and possible a new Xbox for the 4k player. I already have a Denon AVR-x2500.

I'm starting to wonder if this is an upgrade in any way other than size.

Dont let this thread get you down. I've owned 2 other Samsung flagships. I was nervous at first because I usually buy the best but the Q9 doesn't have a 55 which my game room only accommodates unfortunately. This set is amazing after the latest firmware. I too use it for TV and gaming on the PS4.

If those lines follow you around the room it could be the anti reflective coating causing it. It's really only visible in dark scenes when you have lights on in the room.

2018 Samsung FALD Q8FN Owners thread - No price talk

So I’ve had the the 55 q8fn for about 2 days now with I bought to compare to my 55e8 oled. I can only keep 1 and so far I can honestly say I love the q8fn more. So much more color, brightness, and pop

Short video showing what is going on during some dark scenes. Obviously this is a stress test kind of scene but it can highlight that the local dimming algorithym is confused and has no idea what it is doing. I think the horizontal bands are due to software.

not sure if you read my post but: 1) this is a "low budget" movie with actual film artifacts, especially in that scene 2) you're filming it off angle 3) some Netflix encodes have issues 4) film something that you know should have perfect blacks straight on.

But why does it look like that on the q8? I tried same scene on my mac computer and a 1080p 40" samsung. No issues like this. Can anyone play this scene on their q8 and see if they also have same issues ?

Does anyone know the distance between the feet on the stand for the 82" model? My TV stand is 64 inches wide, wondering if it would fit.

no, i agree, those horizontal lines are a bit too much and i've never seen anything like that. but do you see them with higher quality material or just any other movie?

Didn't see it. Running through an onkyo receiver. Used Netflix through my Fire 4K box. Looked fine to me. Maybe it is the panel.

I turned off local dimming via the service menu and it revealed how poor the black uniformity of my screen is. The top right side is particularly bad and is, in fact, extremely sensitive to the the lightest touch on the back plastic of the TV. I can make significant wave patterns with a single low pressure press on the back plastic casing of the tv. Below is a link to a photo I took that shows how off the panel is:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1R_g...ew?usp=sharing

I have noticed the right side black uniformity issue in a few 4k blu rays as well.

I will be returning the TV this week.

For anyone curious, here is a picture showing how bad the DSE was on my replacement set. Particularly the 4 inch tall oval right in the center above the mouse pointer that is visible in almost everything. It's kind of hard to demonstrate it with this crappy picture. This level of DSE is not far off a $549 TCL R617 and really unacceptable for a TV this price where as my x930e was super clean.

Uniformity in general was also poor. The right half is greenish and the left warm.

I was debating trying a 3rd but I think they are all just like this +/- 10% in terms of DSE.

Overall I think this TV is way overpriced. It's dim in HDR, the local dimming is local to 25% sections of the screen, it has horrible DSE. It's saving grace to me are the glossy finish and reflective coating + VRR and interpolation in game mode but neither of those outweigh it's shortcomings otherwise.

I would steer anyone sensitive to DSE away from this, it's somewhere between a R617 and P-series in that regard.

There is alot of distortion and dimming plus an obvious lighted line through the middle. I have to blame it on the movie. Never seen that behavior before. I need to watch on another television. On a good note, all of the DVD and Blu Rays I own in addition to the 4k content that was having issues initially are solved with the firmware updates.

I love my 82" Q8FN, and I'm getting ready to "cut the cord", keeping internet only from my cable provider. It looks like the Samsung TV has a lot of apps for TV networks, but is certainly missing some, such as SyFy and Cooking Channel. Do you folks use another third party box, such as Fire TV, Apple TV, or Roku? I really don't want to buy yet another box to attach to my system, unless I absolutely have to.

New owner of 55Q8FN. Replaced 2008 LG 47LBX.
I wanted an OLED but was worried about glare, coming from a matte screen, and image retention. I would have purchased the Q9FN if it came in 55 inch. Although I did not go for it, the Samsung NU8000 actually looked pretty good at the store for being edge lit and a lot lower cost.

No issues so far. Anti-reflective seems to be good. Mediacom cable, Amazon Prime video and youtube all look good to me. I own a Sony BDP-S590 Blu-Ray player and mostly used it for old DVD's and because the old TV was not "smart", for Amazon Prime video. If I ever start buying or renting Blu-Ray's I guess I'll buy a new one. The TV is on a Sanus table stand because the feet were spaced too wide apart for where it sits. Hated to buy the stand but easier than hiring a carpenter so..

Not a fan of the remote but have the URC from Mediacom and an RCA universal remote each working close enough for the basic functions.

I'm still playing around with settings but thanks to everyone who has posted here previously. It took quite a while to read this and the Sony X900F and the various OLED threads before buying.
scowl likes this.

So to confirm. You also had issues during that scene ? I am reffering to scene from " under the skin on motorcycle".

Samsung QN65Q8FN Gray Uniformity (DSE)

Hello, long time no post! Until I got a new HDTV of course!

I just received my Q8FN Wednesday and got it setup. My first go at 4K, figured this TV has all around good specs, great for games, and I was wowed by it when I fired it up with Xbox One X. It's for sure a beast.

So I'm getting into Red Dead II, the white snowy mountains, and I see it.. once you see it, you cannot unsee it. Never in my days of gaming have I seen DSE - Dirty Screen Effect. I see this "layer" of dark stuff over my screen. I tried the DSE test video on Youtube and I see it. I am so sad.. I don't know what to do. I really like this TV. I got it from Echo and Optics brand new at a great price. It's as cleanly built and fast as can be.

Is this a panel lottery thing? Do I even want to play that lottery? Damn.. OLED does look nice.. help me..

I spoke with Samsung to voice my concern and go on record with a complaint. They want to send a technician to observe the issue. I assume they will just confirm/deny the level of DSE is unacceptable, since there is no fixing the issue. Echo and Optics seems pretty reasonable with returns/repairs for factory issues. I sent them a message about it, waiting to hear back now on what the next step is. Perhaps Samsung comes out and looks at it before going though the return/replace/refund game. I would probably ask EaO to negotiate sending me an LG C8 and pay the difference in price. We'll see what happens.. thanks Samsung engineering lol
