Roku chat support told me it isn't possible. Of course, they recommended to contact them for any specific issues.

Painful to do but it's a good practice to do a factory reset after a firmware update, especially if you're having problems. Have you tried that yet?

If your latest 65R617 has really bad banding, just ask Walmart for an exchange. In my experience, I have seen some 65" 6 series that were almost perfect in regards to DSE. The 55" seems to have more DSE visible.

Post a pic of your latest 65" so we can see what you are talking about.
Just an update. I decided to return the TV and get a replacement from Walmart. It arrived yesterday with a cracked screen. Went back this morning and #5 - yes, #5 - arrives next week.

I received a second OS 9 update a few days ago.

The first update was OS 9 Build 4142

The second update was OS 9 Build 4151

Make sure you have received the latest update. Possibly a bug fix release.

I got a kick out of this. A guy posted this over on the SlickDeals forum:

The Banding issue on TCLs.

"It's NOT a banding issue. But it does look like banding.

What's actually happening is that the Static Dithering Algorithm used by TCL sets, Does not convert Gradient patterns very well from 4:2:2 or 4:2:0 input.

That is to say, most standalone bluray players/ apps that outputs 4:2:2 or 4:2:0 will show the banding like artifact.

If you have a PC you can test this.. using 4:2:2 on 8,10, 12 bit input will give you banding on most (10bit) gradient test patterns.

Whereas using 4:4:4, there's no banding 8/10/12 bit. So it's not banding, it's the sharpening + chroma filter messing up the subpixel upscaling

So to be precise, This was more/less an intentional design choice, the static dithering pattern may enhance hdr highlights through contrast, because it dims more of the surrounding pixels. You lose some texture detail with this type of dithering, and it causes fringe artifacts along with upscaling artifacts.. "

If the price differential is not big, always order from Amazon sold and fulfilled, at least in the U.S. they send UPS out to pick up the huge box, can't be easier if u have to return. Amazon 30 days, Walmart (again make sure is not third party) 90 days. Walmart of course, u return to your local store.

I read the "best 65" gaming TV under $1000" review and the more general "TCL 65″ 6-Series 4K HDR Roku TV with Dolby Vision" review. Both were great reviews. So I'm wondering if this is the TV for me?

Right now I have a Panasonic VIERA TC-P50U50 50" Plasma from 2012. I dialed in the picture quality settings using a blend of online recommendations plus the test patterns from the Disney World of Wonder Blu-ray. I love the picture quality on the Panasonic, but I would like to try 4k and I would also like to jump up to a bigger screen!

Some things about me-

-I am a huge movie fan and have about 300 Blu-rays. Will they look good on the TCL?
-I have an Oppo UDP-205 4K Ultra HD player. My main source of 4k will be 4k UltraHD discs.
-I watch a lot of sci-fi and film noir so black levels are important to me.
-My room is darkish during the day, but I really love to watch movies at night, in total darkness.
-My couch is dead center on the TV so I will always be viewing straight on.
-We don't watch sports at all.
-Streaming will only be 1080 unless I upgrade my internet service.
-Right now I only have a Nintendo Switch, but with a 4k TV coming my way I could see myself grabbing a PS4 or Xbox One X at some point in the future.
-I have a gift card to use, so I will be ordering the TV from Amazon.

So is the TCL a good match for me? I keep re-reading the reviews and it seems like a great blend of price and performance.

Thanks!
I have had the 55" version of this set since May and I still marvel at the image quality. I too came fro Plasma, and other then the off angle thing I cannot fault the set - especially at the price. I wish I had the budget at the time to go with the 65" but I can re-purpose this to my bedroom at some point and get the bigger display.

4K is where this set shines, though upscaling is very good too. There is a lot of excellnt 4K stuff on both Amazon and Netflix, you'll need at least a 25mb download speed to get the most from the streamers. I'm a "one and done" guy with movies, very little I like to rewatch, and my local video store has a small selection of 4K movies so streaming is the best way for me to go.

Buying this set has put me on a major upgrade path. Upgraded my internet service from 20gb to 140gb, replaced my 10yo AVR with a new Marantz with Atmos, and now I'm adding 4 in ceiling speakers. Even just using height speakers Atmos is well worth the cost and effort.

I thought just the opposite. Bright looks just like normal used to. And normal looks like bright used to. Bright now messes too much with how the colors should look. They are changed and don't look close to accurate. Which is how normal used to look.

I'm still having issues getting Dolby Vision from the ATV 4k. It zero issues with Dolby Vision from my FireTV sick 4K, Phillips UHD BD player, or from my XB1X. Something definitely changed . But I guess it might also be associated with how the TCL communicates with !y Onkyo receiver. Because the ATV 4K does produce DV when connected directly to the TV. But now when connected directly the receiver I don't get DV as an option.

Prior to OS 9, with everything going through switches, I had zero issues with DV. Everything is still going through switches, but only the ATV 4K is having DV issues. Which h is why I tried connecting directly to the receiver and TV.

A reset of the TV does nothing. The results are the same and was a complete waste of time for me. if I could only downgrade like you could a year ago, I would be fine.

I did also have some color space switching issues, where the TV is slow to recognize the switch. But that is a minor issue.

I still need to test this TV with HDR and the 444 colorspace. Because prior, TCL did not work properly with 444 and HDR. So all my devices send 422, 420, or RGB. So maybe that could be one good thing to come out of os9?

The second update is the only OS 9 version my TCL installed. I also re-installed it with one of the hidden menus. The one that used to let you roll back firmwares. But, as expected, it made no difference.

Thanks for the responses on this TV. I am leaning very heavily towards placing an order soon.

One thing though, the legs on the 65" won't fit on my current stand, which is about 36" wide. I might try the "reverse the feet trick" and add some mounting / safety straps.

Wall mounting isn't really an option, so I was looking at this stand on amazon. Looks like it should work well with the TV. Has anyone used this one?

I'm close to pulling the trigger on the 65", but still have some concerns about the possible panel issues. Right now, Amazon has the 617 for $819 and Best Buy has the 615 for $799. I think Amazon's return period is 30 days while Best Buy is only 15. I'm assuming I'd notice the issues right away on a bad panel though, correct? Any thoughts on going Amazon vs. Best Buy?

If you are on one of the higher Best Buy reward Zone tiers, you will have a 30 day or a 45 day return period. It's one of the reasons I get many electronic products from best Buy, along with their price matching. Because I get a 45 day return period with BestBuy.

A member on the Roku forum stated he was able to successfully roll back from 9.x to 8.x.

"Send TANNER a message and include your Roku email account address, your unit serial number and an explanation of what happened. With that info he can send a ping to your TV to force it to rollback to the previous version of firmware. That is what he did for me."

Are you kidding? If you're within the 30 day return policy you don't pay for return shipping. The one exception for some products is if you choose "don't want the product anymore" as your reason for returning.

I returned a 55r617 due to a cracked screen. Free shipping and no hassle.

Actually I wasn't sure about the policy and looked it up as a result of this thread. From what I can see, the buyer is responsible for return shipping costs unless the return is due to an "Amazon error"

https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/custo...deId=201819210

In your case, if they didn't package it properly and the screen cracked, that would constitute Amazon error.

Yes. If you have an issue, shipping would be free. While if it is fine and you change your mind, you need to pay for shipping. Unlike bestbuy where you can return it for any reason during the return period. Without incurring an extra cost.

Fortunately for TV, is not hard to find a "fault." Have we not read all the reviews? and Amazon is not going to send out a FBI buy to argue with u.

For most people BestBuy is 15 days to return, Amazon is 30. That makes a big difference to me since it gives more time for problems to appear.

My first purchase on Amazon was August 5, 1996. Out of literally multiple thousand orders I've probably returned maybe 150 or so. I don't recall paying return shipping on a single one. I've never had a return questioned.

"Item defective or doesn't work" is vague enough for pretty much any return you want to make and gets free return shipping. "Defective" covers any tv problem you encounter.

I will note that if you go nuts with returns it is possible to get banned by Amazon but it has to be egregious. Like returning 50% of what you buy. That's also true with BestBuy, Walmart and most other retailers.

https://www.techlicious.com/blog/bes...return-policy/ explains getting banned by BestBuy. "returning high value items" is a factor that can get you banned.

This new software update on my 65R617 has totally screwed up my Apple TV 4K. It forced Dolby Vision to be on and won't let me set it to 4K SDR 60 like it was before. It still is matching range, but I had to turn that on again. Even worse, some titles in my Plex library only play audio with a black screen. These titles play normally on the Plex web app, VLC, and on the Roku Plex app, but on the Apple TV, they're dark. This happened before I updated to the latest Apple software, so I'm blaming the Roku.

I signed up at the Roku forum to try to get a rollback, but I'm waiting to be 'approved' by an admin.

Not pleased at the moment.

I've definitely paid for some returns to Amazon over the last 20+ years. But I've also had many, many thousands of shipments to me. And if an item isn't defective I am not going to say it is. If it works properly and isn't defective I am not going to say it is when returning. I'm not going to lie about the condition to avoid a fee. So they will charge me a return fee in that instance.

Amazon gives me easily $100 to $200 in credits every year from their screw ups. So I have no problem with a return shipping fee every now and then. For an item I changed my mind about owning. For items that are actually defective or damaged? I never pay return shipping for those.

Hmm and mine allows me to set 4K SDR, but won't switch to HDR and doesn't even have any DV options. I need to log into the Roku forums. It's been a while since I've been there.

Is there a consensus best settings for the 65R617 that someone can point me to, or at least settings that are widely considered better than the out-of-the-box?
