These titles play normally on the Plex web app, VLC, and on the Roku Plex app, but on the Apple TV, they're dark. This happened before I updated to the latest Apple software, so I'm blaming the Roku.

I signed up at the Roku forum to try to get a rollback, but I'm waiting to be 'approved' by an admin.

Not pleased at the moment.
If I am getting mine delivered today, would you recommend avoiding an update then?

I don't think there is a way to avoid updating, is there?

If there is a setting to manually allow updates, that's my choice for the future. I registered over at the Roku forum, but I STILL haven't been approved. Anyone know of another way? Phone support? This is nuts.

Well, this is frustrating.
I came home from a two week vacation, and found that my tv had done both the new firmware updates.

And now...
I get no audio on CBS News, YouTube, Democracy Now, and other stations. I uninstalled and installed those stations with no result.
That is BS.
Has anybody else had this problem with the new firmware? Is the only solution to join the Roku forum, and ask for a rollback?

On a side note, my Best Buy 55" remote is getting pretty wonky on the buttons. What's the recommendation for a remote on Amazon?

TIA
Lyndon

Here are the settings that I'm using on my 65R617

Tv brightness: brighter
picture mode: movie, dark HDR, dark DV
picture size: direct
local contrast: high
dynamic contrast: off
back light: 100
brightness: 50
contrast: 100
sharpness: 20
color: 45
tint: 0
color temperature: warm
action smoothing: off
natural cinema: off
LED motion clarity: 0ff

attached are the 11 point grey scale settings for the ROKU app. I used a spyder 5 meter with HCFR. Also attached are the custom colors. I had them match REC709 for some streaming apps that don't support 4k or HDR/DV. For 4k HDR/DV content I use native as the color space.

I did a text chat with Roku customer support. She told me to contact Apple support, although I'm convinced that it was caused by the TCL update. She said there was no way to do a rollback (?). In the end, half of the problem was solved by changing the Apple TV's input on the TCL. Now the Plex videos that were showing a black screen but playing audio are functioning normally, but the Dolby Vision issue remains. I tried switching back to HDMI 2, and the Plex videos went dark again. Oddly, only 480p videos are affected. It would seem that HDMI 2 has gone wonky, but who knows? I'll stick to putting the ATV on HDMI 3 for now, and live with the constant DV until some other software update either fixes it or screws up something else. At least the screensavers look good...

I really wish the TCL and all other devices of the modern age would ask my permission to update. I'm not a beta tester--I just want to watch a movie.

Another thing: it's been 12 hours, and I am still not 'approved' to post on the Roku forum. Tanner seems to have disappeared. Use customer support, such as it is.

Dropped Audio in ROKU Apps?

I haven't had the time to try and scientifically reproduce this so I'll just ask...Is there a known issue where after pausing and then backing up the audio drops when playback is resumed from any of the built in ROKU apps on the 55R617??

I was re-watching Altered Carbon in the NetFlix app when I was interrupted and then fumbled with the remote trying to pause playback. I had to back up to restart where I missed what was going on and when I resumed playback there was no audio. I tried "rewind/play" several times and the issue repeated. This was a few weeks ago and I can't remember if it just started working again or if I had to exit to the ROKU home screen and restart the Netflix app to get the sound back.

My apologies for the lack of specificity but I don't have a lot of time to sit and enjoy this TV. It was late and I was rushing to get back into the show instead of focusing on what steps it took to get the audio back. This has only happened to me this this 1 time (so far).

In case it matters I'm using ARC to push the audio back through my Denon x2400H AVR. The video never cut out...only the audio so it doesn't feel like it was a handshake issue.

Was this a fluke or can I expect to see more instances like this?
Are there any steps I can take to minimize the chance of a repeat occurrence?
I love the set and wish I had more free time to enjoy it!

Ok, I have now read pages 1 - 50 of this thread.

Just got to the CNET review- "With superb picture quality that rivals TVs costing twice as much, TCL's 6 series is the best TV value we've ever reviewed."

That certainly sounds promising. My mind is pretty much made up to go for the 65". I just feel a little nervous about all the people who got bad panels in the early days. Maybe that is mostly a thing of the past now?

This been said before but I shall repeat to get to the point. The TCL6 can "potentially," and it has for many people, a good buy, and the potential is realized for people who knows what they want and can put up with what imperfection. For newbies, you have to be willing to return if unhappy, reason why people here are posting about easy Amazon return etc. So when you get it, just put it on top of the table, don't peel the protecting backings, open the box, packaging nicely in case u have to return the thing in a reasonable able-to-resell condition, put it on its paces before the return period. Always ask the question, these imperfections, can I see it during a normal viewing? should answer whether they bother you enough to send back or keep.

I bought one at Best Buy last night and set it up. I'm getting a little DSE and saw a tiny bit of banding, but nothing bad enough that I'm going to return it over. The only big issue I've had is that I'm using the legs for now and the screw holes on one side weren't drilled right, so I couldn't get the screws to go all the way in. I wound up just using a shorter screw that I had around and it's working. I used the Rtings settings, but find them to be a bit dim for my liking. I'm going to try Bachelor's settings above when I get home. I did have an odd issue with one of the inputs where it went to a static screen at one point and another time said there was no input signal. Both times, I unplugged the hdmi and plugged it back in again and the feed came back. Swapped the hdmi cable out later in the evening and haven't had the issue again, so may have been a bad cable.

I was mostly watching basketball last night and it looked fine. I did try out a couple of 4k/Dolbyvision streams and they looked spectacular.

Amazon gives me easily $100 to $200 in credits every year from their screw ups. So I have no problem with a return shipping fee every now and then. For an item I changed my mind about owning. For items that are actually defective or damaged? I never pay return shipping for those.

True, especially when mega corporations like amazon would do anything to **** over consumers whenever possible, as they usually have no integrity.

In my experience this can be said of many corporations. Sad but true. Amazon, on the other hand, has always treated me extremely well. If I have had a problem, they treat me extremely fairly. I would add Best Buy to the same category.
In any case, the question is, does bad behavior by one party justify that same sort of behavior in all cases by everyone else? Certainly not rational thought from my perspective.
Besides, all of this buy to try, then return behavior ends up costing everyone money. Companies simply cannot absorb these costs long term. So everyone pays more for everything in the long run. In fact, it has also led to the reduction of the period allowed for returns at most retailers with such a program. Again, everyone suffers because there are those of us that abuse the system. The only reason the programs survive at all is due to the fact that most people do have a good level of integrity.
Thanks @Matt2026 .

I can’t find my TV resolution settings on 615R65 for some reason. No 4K @60xx. Not Anywhere in my Roku settings. Just noticed it when I connected a Comcast X1 cable box DVR and it said max settings was 1080P @ whatever. Very unhappy with Comcast Xfiniity. Anyone know what I have forgotten or what’s been changed?

so last two days when I go into Netflix on the xboneX with the new DV working I get flashes of "static" now, usually on the bottom of the screen. Yesterday I just rebooted the xbone and it went away, but today it's back again, haven't tried rebooting again as I've been playing around with my new Harmony remote and getting it setup along with resetting up the my old one for m bedroom setup. Anyone else getting the flashes on their XboneX and Netflix since the update?

That's a good idea- set it up just enough to do a test and be very careful about the packing materials in case it has to go back. I've always had good experiences with Amazon so if I have to do a return that is fine by me. But hopefully I will have good luck with this TV!

Hit the ok button and it will! Show you the resolution and framerate being received by the TV. Like all TVs, any signal gets upconverted to the native resolution of the screen. So 2160P for UHD TVs. So there is no need to show that info.

I do not know if my tv automatically updated to this 9 version software.
Is it something that happens automatically when the tv is left on? Or do you manually have to update it?
Once updated do I have to go into expert settings again to plug in all the values? Or are the expert settings retained when the tv updates?

With internal apps you have to rely on the app for the streaming info. Which is usually not there on many of the roku apps.

Hey dudes. I'm approaching a year now with my 65R617. Still incredibly happy. I did finally break down and watch that youtube DSE test with the hockey dude flying around. I was able to make out a very faint, fuzzy gray vertical column through the white on the right side. It's maybe slightly over half the height of the screen and roughly centered. However, it is not at all evident through regular content. In other words, it's not a real issue for me. Otherwise, just greatly enjoying a bunch of beautiful content with the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 4K disc being a an absolute rockstar of a presentation most recently.

One thing someone mentioned over on the 75" 6 series thread sparked a light bulb as well. The TV has fantastic dark performance especially on HDR. The backlights literally turn completely off when needed such that the TV looks powered off. When they do need to react to a localized light source, it is quite effective and realistic with little/no discernable blooming (great local contrast control). Certain scenes have made me squint in dark room viewing, and I don't even have my backlight at 100. I also keep brightness down around 47-48 because I have a room that stays dark during the day and is pitch black at night.

Bang for the buck is absolute top notch, and even just bang (regardless of bucks) is pretty darn good.

Spent way too much time on this firmware upgrade.

Did the system reset, and got audio back. But then I tried to get into custom menu, and that Roku app was on my old phone. So, I downloaded the app for my Kindle Fire tablet. Gee, that doesn't give access to the custom menu. Found my old phone, charged it, and reset my custom menu.

And now...I never was able to get a good handshake with my TCL 55R615 and my Pioneer VSX-1120 receiver. I was eventually able to use the Roku remote to turn on the tv, and it would turn on the receiver (connected with the ARC3 input), but upon turning off the tv, I always had to turn off the receiver with its remote. It was connected for 5.1 channel, but the icon for the AV receiver never said it recognized a signal-this was always the case above. I had it set for auto detect in the CEC menu.

Now, it doesn't turn on the receiver. Any thoughts? Any ideas?

This is what sold me. I got this tv because I wanted local dimmimng. While I felt the vizio p series local dimmimng gave more pop it came at the cost of blooming issues that just couldn't be excused.

The TCL local dimmimng it's very unobtrusive. It rarely shows up as an image artifact and looks amazing in super low light.

The only weakness I don't like about the TCL is that it's ambient light and reflecting handling aren't top not notch so daytime viewing isn't as good as it could be but I'm really I'm ok with that trade in the end

Anyone notice that this new update took away our ability to see resolution and screen info? I used to hit the settings button and upon exit it would give me resolution info such as 1080p or 4K HDR10, that is all gone now. Can someone else comfirm?

I remember a few years back, Best Buy implemented a restocking fee. I'm guessing thanks to Amazon, they had no choice but to get rid of it.

Speaking of bad behavior, I had a co-worker who used to abuse Costco's very relaxed return policy. He bought an iPod, then every year when they'd release a new model, he'd "swap" out his old one for a new one.

Is it something that happens automatically when the tv is left on? Or do you manually have to update it?
Once updated do I have to go into expert settings again to plug in all the values? Or are the expert settings retained when the tv updates?
Mine updated on it's own. I don't have it set for the quick start where it stays on stand by instead of turning off.

I haven't check the settings but I think mine changed. Since my TV updated, whites have that appearance as if a blue light filter is on. It's not enough to bother me to sit down and spend time messing with the settings, just yet.
