Thanks, it was the tv, tried a different one and the ARC works and the picture is as it should be. Something with the HDMI inputs on that one.

Definitely not true.

I can't even count the number of times someone has had an issue and it was due to them having old HDMI cables or non certified ones.

if youve compared the two, would $700 more for the sony be worth it?
I don't have a 900F but I read a lot of reviews before buying my TCL and the consensus seems to be that TCL has just as good PQ/HDR/color but bad upscaling, and I agree with that after using it. SD will not look good upscaled on this set esp low bitrate content.

The upscaling is fine. But the Sony upscaling is better. Now Vizio has worse upscaling so that might be called bad?

So I was having an issue with Netflix DV nor HDR10 not working in the native app nor through my Shield so I ended up going into the secret menu for the hell of it and tried a software update from there, it offered the same version so I said screw it, and tried letting it reinstall the same version and BOOM, DV and HDR working again in Netflix! So, I say this always worth a try if you have weird little issues like this... Still not sure why some people have versions above 9.0.0, did they pull a newer back or something? Also, I'm happy to say I've never had super dark or washed out issues in the ~9 months we've had it but I do gotta say that using the app to set gamma 2.0 and lowering color from 45 to 40 looks great in HDR. previously I had to bump brightness from 50 to 52 occasionally, not anymore after the gamma change.

As far as I'm concerned the 65 was the best bang for the buck at $1,000 when it came out. Now, if you're in the market for a 65" TV below $1K, you'd be crazy not to get this. That price is nuts.

I got the BB email about this and picked it up immediately. That price is insane! So my question is what settings are you guys using? Are the ones posted on rtings.com a good starting point or should I use something else?

Hey folks, I'm new to the forum and I just picked up the 55" version of this TV a couple of weeks ago. I have some vertical banding across the whole screen, that only shows up sometimes when watching content. Is it possible to get this TV without any banding at all? I'm otherwise very happy with it. I have calibrated it with a Spyder 5 and I'm really happy with the result. It required surprisingly little adjustment during the calibration! I have no other issues with it.

Do many people in here have a set that actually has no banding at all? It that a possibility?

I'm just trying to decide if I will try to exchange it, I bought it through amazon!

Thanks!

Better hurry up and get one before Trump places 25% tariffs on China TVs.

They did with me when the 75" inch version went on sale.

You can do it in person, on the phone or through their website's chat.

So is this set hdr10 compatible or just Dolby vision? I'm now looking for a4k player and most around$200 have one or the other... This hdr10/DV battle is ridiculous. Reminds me of hddvd vs br... Pick one and hope that's the one that goes mainstream...

That said... Any recommendations on a uhd player? So far , from the little I've researched , it's

Sony x800 - has hdr10
Sony x700 - has Dolby vision
Xbox onex - not sure what it's hdr is

I'm reading this thread looking for info about the 55 inch also... Can't seem to find that thread.

I have seen vertical banding in reviews of the 55 inch model. Look at the digital trends review on youtube for an example.

Seems there is a panel lottery with that model. Some have dark corners and vertical bands that are notice-able. Maybe others just aren't looking closely.

I have the Sony X700 and like it. I think it's clearly superior to the X800.. I did have problems with the first one I had but exchanged it and the replacement works well. I have seen others say it blacks out intermittently and that's the problem I had with the first unit I had.

I don't really use my UHD player often or for much but the X700 does SACD and 3DBD and I'll likely use it mostly for those features instead of UHD discs. I can't see or hear enough difference between my UHD discs and the 4K streaming versions to justify finding the discs and loading them instead of just telling my remote to play the movie.

Speaking of streaming.. when I'm in the Roku part of the tv, my receiver automatically switches to TV as it's input. ( Onkyo 686 ) it always seems like I have to crank the volume to get it to a descent listening volume . ( Around 65-70 ) maybe it's a settings app in Roku I need to change or maybe it's my receiver.. my tv and receiver I just got 4 days ago , so I'm still pretty green on all the setup stuff

Good... Some people have the problem and some don't or they don't know how to look for it and they are better off not knowing.

I am VERY tempted to get the 55.... But if you want to see an example of exactly what I'm talking about watch this Vid and it's at 4:38

The 6 Series handles HDR10 and Dolby Vision HDR. It does not handle HLG HDR or HDR10+.

HDR10 is the standard. So all HDR TVs handle at least HDR10.

Hopefully TCL upgrades the 6 Series to handle HLG HDR. Since that is what the broadcasters will be using for HDR. Plus they also have European models that handle HLG. But none of the US models handle HLG.

So I need to spend some time cleaning up my connections. I found out the HDMI splitter I have does not handle 4K...even though it states it does. I have had some issues with ARC, and am wondering if it is implementing correctly. Upon the help given here, I set all HDMI ports to 2.0, and was able to get 4K from all my devices, except those connected via the splitter. I just added a soundbar as well, connected through ARC. Not sure if I can set the soundbar to not turn on every time I turn on the set. It definitely enhances the audio, but I don't want it to default to "on" each time. (Especially for late night viewing).

Also, when I tell the soundbar to use the HDMI input over the optical...my Shield turns on automatically and takes precedence over all other inputs (for audio). So, for instance...If I am watching cable, and switch to HDMI via the soundbar...the Shield turns on, and I lose audio from the cable box...

For reference, I have never used ARC. My main setup in the basement is a projector, and have never needed ARC, as everything already switches through the receiver.

You can still use the arc Without controlling other devices. You just need to turn off those features in the devices. So they don't automatically turn on.

Dolby vision looks like how it should on the built in Roku Dolby app and Youtube, but looks terrible on Netflix, Amazon and Vudu. Forced HDR10 (via secret menu) is not so bad.
I watched Suspiria UHD on Amazon, but switched to the regular HD version part way through. The implementation of Dolby Vision is atrocious, rendering the film unwatchable. Some one completely screwed up this title in my opinion, because the color grading on the HD version is nowhere near that dark. It's not your set.

I don't think my set (TCL 65R615) is having the problems you describe with Netflix or Vudu, but I'll check the next time I watch.

HDR at this point in time is more trouble than it's worth, IMO. Instead of just being absorbed in a movie, I'm switching back and forth between versions (something Amazon doesn't make easy), checking the settings on my set, going into modes I haven't used (Medium Dolby Vision), then realizing I'm getting SOE because this setting has never been used by me, completely distracted because I don't know if my set is misbehaving, or Amazon has screwed up. I finally gave up worrying about it, switched back to the HD version for the 2nd time, and just watched the rest of the movie, which was stupid, so that didn't help my mood, either. If these streaming companies want me to watch their content, they need to get this stuff straight. HDR has been around long enough to not have these stupid bugs. How many people have returned sets because of bad HDR implementation on Amazon or Netflix? Enough.

all look perfect on both my 6 series and my P series, not sure what your getting or why. are you streaming via wifi or wired? mine are wired and never touched the "secret menu" either. have you tried a full restore and check things then and if so, were they the same? do you also have the same issue if watching DV/HDR from an external source like a UHD player that supports DV? if yes to that then you have a tv issue, if no, then your issues might be elsewhere.
