TCL6 or sony??

Local Costco running a huge one week deal on a Sony set. So if price were exactly the same, would you still buy the TCL 55 R613 at the store, or a Sony 55 X850G?

I'm pretty sure the 850 is an IPS panel, so still the TCL, no doubt. At least for me. Dark room performance matters.

Now if it were the 950G, it'd be a tighter decision.

I thought VA worse for off angle but otherwise equal to IPS. You think VA better?
What about the supposed uniformity or quality inconsistencies on the TCL - is that something worth worrying about?
Also interface Roku vs Sony Android - comparable for typical Netflix and Amazon apps?

Tint-0
Color- 45-60 depending if you want want more pop.

These are my settings anyway.
I can't do the Brighter setting. It's way too bright for me in a light controlled room. With HDR normal I had TV Brightness set on Darker. And with HDR Dark I typically had it set to Dark. And bumped it TV Brightness up to Normal last night.

Sharpness I have on 20, which is the default and doesn't seem to add any sharpening. While below 20 seems to de-sharpen it.

And for the color, I recently changed it from 48 to 50, for my Game systems. WHich I use my second receiver output to go to another HDMI input on the TV. So it's always set to Game mode.

For regular HDR viewing, from my main receiver output, WHich goes to the ARC input, I recently changed color from 45 to 48. WHen I put it back on HDR Dark When I was using Normal HDR I had it set to 45.
Well that's ok. Whatever looks good for your environment. Yeah the sharp settings is wierd on this tv. Usually sharp you set to 0 but default is 20. I have mine on 20. If you set to below 20 not sure if it de-sharpens anything, maybe it does. You are using "Movie" mode correct? I use "Movie" mode when watching movies but I use "Normal" mode when playing on my Xbox X. It just brings out the colors better.

VA is better for overall picture quality. It delivers much deeper blacks/far better contrast, particularity in a dark room. IPS panels do have better viewing angles but their blacks appear very grey. Most people do prefer a VA panel, even at the sacrifice of viewing angles.

As far as screen uniformity issues with TCL, you may run into those, yes. But with Costco, you can easily exchange it. You may just get a good panel though, it's just as likely. Sony does have it's share of uniformity issues as well, so you're really open to it with any LCD TV. But TCL, Vizio and Hisense are more prone to it, it seems. In this case, I'd still go for the TCL as I wouldn't even consider any IPS panel myself. Ever.

Sony X850G - https://i.rtings.com/images/reviews/...mity-large.jpg
TCL R6 - https://i.rtings.com/images/reviews/...mity-large.jpg

The Roku interface is, I'd say about equal to Android. It's down to personal preference. Some would say the Roku interface is the best on the market because it's so snappy and versatile. It's very good! Some would say LG's is the best. Honestly most of the smart platforms in TV's are good and get the job done, aside from Vizio's, which is a bit lackluster.

On this brighter setting you’re not losing detail in the clouds? When I turned on hdr dark and dropped the hdr brightness setting I found a ton of detail around a tiny little sun that I was missing.

If you adjust while in game hold down the space bar or A button on the Xbox One it will pull up the current in game screen.
In my case anything higher than 1100 would remove the depth of clouds and the sun would just be a bright blob in the sky.

Just went to Costco, and they have a bunch of 55" and 65" models available. TCL must be making room for the new ones.

I recently saw a post on the 65 R615 about blooming(?) in dark scenes and poster mentioned the fix for it. Can’t find it. I’m watching too much TV right now due to health issues and the TCL is in my dark (by design) MBR. Any help would be appreciated. Fairly sure I’m using Rtings servings tweaked a bit because I like a brighter TV than many.

Question:

Was watching some 4k videos on my Firestick. One video started off SDR, then it kicked into HDR. I find that odd, so I pressed Select, to see the HDMI input, it said HLG HDR.

Uhh... when was this device updated to HLG, or is this some weird glitch?

If it does really do HLG, what apps work with it?

The most recent update enabled HLG HDR.
Last time I checked, I had not received it yet.

I don't have it on mine yet since I have not received the last update. So I only get SDR from HLG content. But other people in this thread have posted info or pictures showing them getting HLG HDR from appropriate HLG HDR content.

I would also take what they post on twitter with a grain of salt. It wouldn't be the first time they posted something wrong about the TV.

And also with HLG HDR, the only way I would be able to view it on my 6 series setup is by connecting a device directly to my TV. Since my Onkyo receiver will not pass HLG HDR. Altough DV and HDR10 is passed through. If I ever get the new firmware I will test with some of my HLG HDR files.

This came from a TCL rep. I have the new update and I don't have it. They are probably using Sky because Sky can show HLG-HDR

What I can tell you is this. Was watching clips on YouTube, under Stats For Nerds, it list as HLG, when watching from the Firestick 4k. I press the selected button on the Roku remote, which tells me 60hz and HD as HLG HDR.

I hope your right but who needs HLG its strictly used for broadcasting and mostly used in the UK. Does it really matter if you can watch a YouTube video in HLG. NO not really..lol

US ATSC 3.0 broadcasts will use HLG for HDR.
And current US cable and Satellite UHD HDR broadcasts are also using HLG.

As far as Youtube, if the video only has HLG HDR, then I would need an HLG capable TV to be able to watch it properly. Because I would certainly rather watch a Youtube video in HDR than in SDR. And without an HLG capable TV, it will be in SDR.

Forgive me if this has been discussed. I went back a few pages and didn't see anything. A couple things.

1. Using the internal Netflix app, first trying to stream Stranger Things a couple weeks ago. Just opening the show page navigation screen (play, more episodes, etc) crashed/restarted the TV three times. Other shows played fine. Eventually, after 10-15 mins it played fine. Then last night the same thing happened with The Spy. This time I restarted my modem, and that seemed to fix it, but who knows? Once it actually plays and doesn't crash, it's flawless. Buffers in like two seconds and plays full resolution seamlessly. Don't know if it's the TV, Netflix, or my network. My network pings at 200+ MB download normally, but I fear it may be hiccuping.

2. Seem to be having more frequent issues with the TV automatically picking up the sound signal (CEC/ARC). Having to turn it off and on too frequently to reestablish the link. All cables are premium certified from monoprice and securely connected. I do not suspect it's the Onkyo given how buggy the TV has been lately. I have not changed anything with the setup.

ben, are you wireless or wired?

are your issues limited to Netflix only? if not, what other apps are you having issues with?

do you have any devices connected directly to either input 1 or 2 and if so, are you having any ARC issues with them?

also, include your OS version and the last time you updated it or it was updated automatically.

Wired

Yeah, Just Netflix and only those two shows had issues, and The Spy played correctly the first time (Friday night I think) but crashed last night.

Got the PS4 in input 1, no issues.

Will have to check tonight on the software. Honestly just answering those questions, it really seems to point to Netflix. Just wondering if anyone has heard about issues or had similar ones.

try installing Netflix on your PS4 and see if it happens then. mind you, the build and version of Netflix is probably very different between platforms, but, give it a try anyway.

I think your issue is pointing towards the version of Netflix on your TCL tv and Not the TCL tv itself.

Which is better? I have a Samsung KS8000 65" right now and I am seeing the prices of the 65R617 at BB and am intrigued. I could take the van over and buy it right now. I could add some more cash and go up to a 75" which would be amazing in my living room.

Is the TCL 6 series a better TV? I am mainly interested in the FALD and Dolby Vision which my Samsung wont do.

I have an older Vizio in my bedroom which is FALD and there is something about the picture quality that tops my KS8000. Granted the Samsung is brighter and more vivid and does HDR but I think the Vizio is more accurate and has warmer colors.

Wow! Yeah, there's tons of hits with people questioning the same as myself. Honestly didn't think of this and thought it was kind of an obscure question.

Audio problems

Have just been setting up my new 65 TCL. Coming from a Vizio M65

I have an older Yamaha AVR - no HDMI. From my optical ports on the AVR I have the Cable port going to my cable box and the DTV port going to the TCL optical port

Watching cable, I get 5.1 where applicable when the AVR is set to Cable. When it is set to DTV I still get sound but it is only 2 channel

Watching the apps like Netflix on the TCL, I get HDR video but i do not get any 5.1 audio on any program (whether it is HD or HDR or DV) and the AVR must be set to DTV ie no sound when the AVR is set to Cable

I used to get 5.1 watching netflix through the app on my Vizio.

Any suggestions pls?? This is not my strong suit!

Also do I understand correctly that the only way I can control my volume on the AVR and change channels etc is thorugh a universal remote? No way to get the existing Roku remote to funtion in this capacity?

Many thanks!
