I may have misunderstood things way back when but I thought the recommendation about movie mode was for making picture quality adjustments. I too have found normal mode with normal lighting to trump movie mode dark for regular viewing in my dimly lit room. Same with HDR. Moved it off HDR-Dark to normal. Works well for my ancient retiree eyes.

The same thing happened on my TV about a week or so ago. It happened twice, two days in a row. The dark blotches were in different places each time. Each time I unplugged it for a bit and powered back on and it was back to normal. It hasn't since then though.

Hi 613/15/17 owners,
I'm thinking of picking up the 613 on BF. Is the 625 much better because of the inclusion of HLG. I'm hoping the lack of HLG is not a deal breaker, but the 613 seems to be more of a bargain. I need this for a master bedroom.

Movie mode does work well for older films with a lot grain, especially 4k movies where grain becomes too noisy. But for modern stuff shot on digitial and general tv/sports, normal mode works great and things pop.

I also find (at least on my TV), Dolby Vision is too dark with crushed blacks and some films looks like wearing sunglasses. HDR10 is much better, so I force HDR10 on via secret menu.
I switched mine to Normal mode and the picture definitely pops more. I dialed the backlight and color down to 40. Thanks!

I use Normal mode. I find Movie mode to be to dim and washed out. Maybe a pitch black room is needed for it to look right. I've never used Movie mode on any TVs I've owned.

I find it quite the opposite lol. I do watch mine mostly in the dark though.

tcl 65r625 vs 65r613

what are the spec differences between these 2 models? I know the 65r625 is the most recent model but when did the 613 come out? Or, is the 613 simply the costco model #?

TCL 6 Series (2018) Brightness Issue

Hi guys,

I recently bought the TCL 65R617. There is an option for Picture Brightness but it doesn't seem to do anything. I'm using the built-in ROKU to watch Netflix. If I change the setting:
Roku settings / TV picture settings / TV brightness / Darker there is no difference at all. Is this setting only for 4k content or is there something wrong with my TV? The regular brightness option works, but not the "Picture Brightness" and from what I've read this is the best way to do it.

On a side note, if anyone is an expert on ARC, I'm using a Pioneer VSX-921-K receiver and I can't get any audio from the TV. I've made sure to enable ARC everyone in the Roku TV and I've enabled HDMI Control and HDMI ARC on the receiver, but I only get static.

Thanks for any help.

613 is the same as the 615 and 617 - last year's model. The 615 and 617 have different remotes but are otherwise the same. I'm not sure which remote the Costco 613 has. This is the model discussed in this thread. There is a separate thread for the 625.

I'm trying to help my brother replace his old Sharp TV with the best under $1000.00 (Canadian) bang-for-the-buck TV and it sounds like this is it.

Can I ask how this TV looks playing DVD and Blu ray discs?

I was at a Canadian retailer the other day (London Drugs) and had the salesmen demonstrate the Samsung RU7100 with a Blu ray player.
I brought the latest Criterion Blu of Barry Lyndon and was shocked how bad it looked on the entire wall of TVs.
Dancing grain was out of this world.
While I made sure the TV wasn't set too sharp I forgot about the more likely culprit since all the TVs looked bad...the player.

Since my brother and I rarely stream but have a large collection of Blu rays and DVD's would this still be a good TV for this intention?
Or is there a better option?
I should add that while I still love my Panny plasma his eyes are accustomed to a much brighter, vivid TV.
(I was thrilled to see the inky blacks surpassing my plasma with the new OLEDs)
My brother thought the RU7100 was too dark.

Any input would be greatly appreciated since I won't be able to test out the TCL in a store.

Hi guys,
just joined this forum. I was following the 2019 Qled forum by mistake.
I have a 65" 6 series bought in April this year so it's a 2018 model.
I have recently been experiencing large irregular shadows going up and down the screen.
Then when I turn off the tv, and turn back on they are gone.
Anyone else?
Does this get worse? More frequent with time?
What is TCL customer service number?

Thanks

Scroll up 8 posts and you'll see where I replied about this same thing happening to me to a post by Gavin S who also had it happen. There's been no other replies but obviously 3 reported incidents of this now, all within a couple weeks, is more than a coincidence.

Ok. I'll add my one-off. About a month ago, turned on the TV to watch the news on cable. Left third of the screen was very dark with some more dark vertical stripes on the right side. Sort of blob shaped, not well defined rectangles. Cycled thru other inputs and setup screens with no change. I finally did a power reset thru the setup and once the TV restarted, all was back to normal. Has not happened since. I think I have updated to the latest version after it happened.

Does anyone know if the HLG FW upgrade for R617/615/613 was confirmed? Did anyone with the exception of the person who started the thread receive it? Thanks in advance.

Hi Baron, just so you know, I'm Ken and you can find me around a number of boards here, as for Matt2026 you'll find that in the bible

My Samsung TV is just fine for me, especially on Blu-rays. DVD quality can vary a bit but some old movies are only on DVD. I watched a DVD movie recently and didn't realize it was a DVD until after I'd watched it. The TV is 55" with a curved screen, which some folks hate, and I sit about 6' away. For me the curve makes the screen equidistant from my seating position and it's a 3D set which I will really miss IF it dies before I do

Baron I have to agree. Blue rays and streaming 4k look wonderful on this TV. I have a 900f and honestly neither kills the other. I like that the 900 has more pic settings but that's it. Also you have to keep in mind not all blue rays are the same. What I mean is a director may want grain to have a certain feel to the movie say if its a western or gritty crime or something like that. Ive seen blu rays ( I'm using a Sony 6700)that look gorgeous and very sharp and clean. Partly because the bluray was edited to be crisp and this TV does quite a good job in the pq department. Only thing us I've posted here to see other ppls pq settings and no replies. Go figure

I hear ya.
I feel Criterion favor home theater setups over my setup of a 60" 10 feet away with all the dancing grain I see.
I'm a bit concerned because I don't own or watch any special effect Blockbuster films.
I'm still waiting for some of my favorite films to hit Blu ray.

blu rays look great on the TV. Some stuff will show a lot more grain however (Star Wars on blu ray for example) but you may have seen that on a 1080p screen as well. Haven't actually played a DVD in the year and a half I've had my R615 but i have watched some lower resolution files I've downloaded (kdrama's at 540p) and most have upscaled nicely. Some 720p files I played show a lot of artifacts but that could also just be the files themselves on how they were compressed. Disc's shouldn't have that issue.

I have a note 8 and it states you need a pixel. So I took that with a grain of salt kinda knowing going into it I had the wrong "hardware" to calibrate with. I think the colors are a little more on point. I assume if you have a good camera from a note, iPhone ect it may not be correct but may be better than nothing. I use the roku app for the TV and checked before which was not touched to after and it did change settings ...for the better? I don't know but it looks good
