Sony 940E vs 900F

My Panasonic 60" plasma finally bit the dust and I have narrowed my choice down to the 940E and the 900F. Which way should I go? I mainly watch TV/Movies/Sports. I have read that the 940E is better for movies but it has some motion blur issues with sports, which the 900F doesn't have. How noticeable is the motion blur? Which should I get? They are the same price at Cleveland Plasma.

Thanks!

If motion performance is important then the 900f. Otherwise the 940e is far superior.

Is the motion flow that bad on the 940E? Im coming from the last generation panasonic plasma. I would hate to pay 3k for a tv and get pissed every time I watch football bc of noticeable blur

I have the 940E and while I had to tweak the motion settings for hockey, I was able to get it "good enough". Of course, it came at the expense of ultimate brightness, but the TV has enough (for me). I don't notice the motion "issues" as much with movie content, so I could still get HDR bright enough while maintaining acceptable, to me, motion. However, others may object.

That said, I haven't seen the 900F, so I can't directly compare. Just letting you know at least one person is (mostly) happy watching hockey on their 940E. I just try to ignore the ads on the boards, which is where I continue to see some annoying behavior on occasion.

I'll let ya know in a couple days as my 940e gets delivered tomorrow and I'm coming coming from a 65vt60. However I will say that if you read the 940e thread there seems to be many more people that don't see or have any issue than those that do.

thanks! I tried going through the 940E thread but it was all over the place and trying to find comments on the motion blur for sports vs gaming was difficult. I don’t game at all so I don’t care about that, just sports.

I had the 940E and never had an issue with sports or gaming (i know you said uou dont care but its fast moving). I now have an oled and sure i now see the difference, but really it was a non issue, unless side by side. And as others have said can be cleaned up with clearness setting.

Indeed, I believe clearness was what I used, and I think it's Sony's implementation of BFI (black-frame insertion), hence the brightness loss I incurred to use it. I had to settle on a compromise between bright enough and some motion annoyance (e.g. on the ads on the boards in hockey as aforementioned). For me, there was a clear point where the loss of brightness was not adding enough betterment to the motion.

Got her all setup yesterday and all I can say is I'm not going to miss my VT60 one bit Deeper blacks, brighter whites, I never thought I cared much about brightness but it is just so much more dynamic and lively. I was up late just watching 4k youtube vids via xbox one x and was mind blown. I'll update again once I watch some sports but haven't noticed any motion issues yet. Using settings copied from the avsforums 940e settings youtube video for now.

Anyone able to compare the two sets yet? Own a 940e, but debating the 900f.

I'm also curious about some extra insight between these two models. I'm currently leaning towards the X900F because of my motion sensitivity, but the tv will be mounted in a dark basement.

I have seen the X900F in person, but not the X940E.

Guys, just go to www.rtings.com and use their comparison tool to do a side by side comparison between the 900F and the 940E.

Their comparison tool shows just about everything you would like to know about each set; Also, the online site offers the calibration numbers used for optimizing each set's picture.

Sony XBR-940E, Integra DHC-80.2, Oppo 103, Sound Lab A-1 electrostatic speakers,SVS PC12-NSD subs, InnerSound Electrostatic Amp,, Hafler 220 amp, Harman Kardon PA5800 amp, Pioneer LD-W1, Darbee Darblet, DVDO iScan Mini, Nvidia Shield, Yamaha CR-7, Koss ESP/950, Stax SR-40, Audeze Isine 10, etc, etc.

I can’t find anymore 940e models locally. And I’m getting offered the 900F for $3k flat from local place in town which is a better price than what some online x940e sets are selling for. I also don’t think the 940E has the X1 processor...

940E and 900F both use the X1 Extreme. Depending on how dense your area is it may be worth popping into a Best Buy with a Magnolia to see if they can check inventory levels for open box 940E's. They were taken off the planogram when the 2018's arrived and most of the demos are gone, but a few may still be kicking around at very, very, very nice price points.

Yeah already called everybody I could. They can only order few remaining in storage from Sony. So best I could find is $3,000 for the 900F. I think I’ll just pull the trigger. Even around Black Friday I doubt it’ll fall below 3k for a 75” in this model. What do you guys think?

Yeah for the next 5 years I will wonder how the 940E would have looked like in my living room lol. Granted they are pretty close in all specs and tests but that step up in FALD is what I like. I can only return mine for store credit, local place I got a good price on 900F has that kind of return policy. Hence the better pricing I guess

If this makes you feel any better my salesman said the 900f is better.

And I just hope I get a good one because I don't think they will have replacements.

These are just my opinions.

Yes the 900f is better in response time. And gray uniformity. And yes I would be going out on a limb if it was a faulty unit. So I’ll try to be content.

The 940E is no longer available. The 900F is. That’s why they are “salesman”.

A simple formula: if Sony made a better TV, they would have named it the 940F. 900F is an upgrade to the 900E but not in the same league as the 940E. The 940E is so close to the Z9D that Sony realized its mistake in pricing the 940E far less than the Z9D. All 940E owners should feel lucky.

Yes I can say I thought I had both TVs side-by-side in my living room and while reviewers and sites like rtings go on and on about the horrible motion on the 940E. It’s hardly any difference on the 900F the motion issues that turn up are totally dependent on what content your waiting and what settings you have set. I Dolby Vision is no solution you there I think it’s really a pain in the ass right now As you constantly have to fiddle with the settings depending on whether you’re watching Amazon prime or Netflix or your cable box or uHD Blu-ray They definitely don’t have this technology finally sorted out and some settings totally clear up the motion Smooth and perfect watching something on Netflix and you’ll go to Amazon prime and it will have horrible judder. It was no better on 900F What they talk about is the pixel response Which really is not noticeable . I think they try to Use content that exacerbates the motion and claim that it’s the 940 slow pixel but in all honesty Having them side-by-side they both exhibit the same motion issues that are obvious.. its content and setting dependent rather than the pixel response of the tv . My honest opinion.
