Well, the DV file contains metadata that puts the TV into a mode that can properly display an HDR DV file. Both signal paths, HDMI ports and the internal app path, support DV files. The TV itself has both the dynamic range and the gamut/color space necessary for DV.

This actually brings up a good question that Thomas should be able to answer. Since he has an OPPO 203 he can put it in TV LED DV mode (or whatever it's called) and see if the Sony will provide DV or HDR10. In AUTO, I'm pretty sure the 203 will default to TV LED if it is available but there is no indicator which more you are in. If you "force" it by selecting TV LED that should tell us if the Sony will now process the other DV profile or not. I suspect not and Sony is probably sticking with player led profile 5 but we don't know that for sure right now.

I went to my local B&M TV store today to have a closer, in-person look at both the Z9D and the A1E. I have little or no experience with OLED, so felt it was important to at least compare the two technologies, even though I am primarily interested in the 75Z9F.

Unfortunately, as is the case with many B&M stores, I was presented with displays running a DirecTV feed, actually a football game replay on ESPN. The displays were obviously not calibrated (don't know what picture mode they were set to), and were running from a DVR set to 1080i, with the final up-scaling happening on the TV.

I was not impressed with either display, most likely because of the DTV signal quality. I am a DTV subscriber, and the PQ on my calibrated 940D is better than what I saw in the store. It was a disappointing visit, and did not provide me with any insight regarding the differences between OLED and LCD. So, I am back to waiting for some professional reviews before making a decision.

Your computer running CalMan must have an HDMI port capable of carrying the proper signal and, if I remember correctly, it must have an Intel graphics processor.
It can have Nvidia GeForce also..... No other Nvidia or AMD.

If you do get a chance to see a Z9F and have a “cooperative” sales person, switch the picture mode to Cinema. The default for DV content is DV Bright which may be good because of the ambient light but the reference setting is dark.

Didn't go for OLED because my living space quite bright during the day, unfortunately the ETA for the TV is not for another few weeks I heard.

Once I get it i'll chime in for sure!

Do you mind me asking where you pre-ordered?

Only reason I haven't is because it's not listed on Best Buy's Canadian site yet.

Thanks.

I’m not too familiar with the oppo personally but it sounds like there’s some kind of ability to amend the file metadata in real time to set some basic parameters differently on the display based on it’s type. I won’t be able to test that unfortunately.

You don't mention what store you went to

But if you go to a Best Buy/Magnolia then they will let you bring your own disc and allow you to adjust the TV. Not 100% optimum...but better than a random direct Tv feed on a display that's probably set to Vivid

The A1 and Z9D are getting to closeout points so the displays may very well be sitting out in the open store ..depending on your location
If you are concerned about brightness because you have a sunlit room, I have found it helpful to check out the display under the store lights as well..outside of the Magnolia area where its typically darkened

Well I went to Worst Buy and put in a order for the 75z9f. It's not due in until Oct 3rd so hopefully there will be some more reviews as good as Thomas's by then.

It was a B&M store local to Austin, Tx. I went in to the store on a whim, and did not have any of my own content with me. You make good recommendations, which I plan to follow on a subsequent visit before I place my order.

Does your slip have a date listed? Mine shows Sept 28 but I'm not sure that's accurate.

The delivery date on the slip actually says Oct 6th but they said they'd call me with a date once the order actually gets in the system.

I definitely won't be getting a 75Z9F, but I still might consider a 65Z9F depending on (user) reviews.
No way the Z9F will be a land slide better then the great Z9D. If may be better, but not buy a whole lot I bet.....65Z9D are at a great price....

Sorry, thought you had the 203. It is one of only two players that work with Sony TVs to provide DV via disc. The new Panny is supposed to as well but not sure if it has been updated. The Oppo has a setting under the video output settings that allow it to provide the "legacy" DV output used by LG and Vizio (TV lead) or the profile 5 version used by Sony (player lead). Just not sure if the Master series still only uses profile 5.

I think it was confirmed at IFA that the Master Series TV again only support profile 5 version of DV.

Yeah BB Canada doesn't have it up yet, you might have to try your local AV stores. Gibbys do carry a lot of good stuff, gibbys electronic supermarket. They are taking pre-orders, couldn't paste the link/URL because I have under five post

This past sunday they had nfl on the 85 900F. Was very excited to see football on the tv, but the feed was lagging and cutting in and out. horrible way to present an otherwise beautiful display

The Oppo has a setting under the video output settings that allow it to provide the "legacy" DV output used by LG and Vizio (TV lead) or the profile 5 version used by Sony (player lead). Just not sure if the Master series still only uses profile 5.
According to the Dolby document "Dolby Vision – Profiles and levels",
https://www.dolby.com/us/en/technolo...les-levels.pdf

the UHD Blu-ray players use profile 7; and profile 7 has 2 sub-profiles:

. (Original) Profile 7 Full Enhancement Layer decoding the base layer video stream and the enhancement layer video stream.

. Profile 7 Minimal Enhancement Layer (MEL) without instantiating a secondary HEVC decoder for the enhancement layer.
"The MEL consists of Dolby Vision composer and content metadata (i.e. without the video stream)".
"Base layer/enhancement layer full alignment is required, as documented in Blu-ray Disc Association Specifications.
The MEL can be used to minimize the processing requirements for the enhancement layer and thus ensure broader use among UltraHD Blu-ray SoCs."

Universal audio/video receiver (Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, etc.) is achieved.
Universal HDR TV (HDR10, Dolby Vision, HEVC HLG HDR, VP9-HLG / VP9-PQ YouTube HDR, Dynamic HDR) is required.

Push for universal HDR TV!

Interesting. I didn't think all the DV content on Vudu was switched over to Profile 5.

Is there a Vudu app yet?

No, no, no...the internal apps support DV just fine.
