Well the 65 should have the best dimming if it still has the same number of zones as the bigger sizes because of the surface area it has to cover but it would be missing out on the 2 biggest features in my eyes the higher brightness and getting more of the benefit from the higher resolution. If its much less bright that would also be an advantage for the dimming aswell but in my experience the only time the number of zones comes into question is watching in a pitch black room with a dark film and bright HDR highlights which I feel only zones in the thousands would be good enough to handle.

Just had the 85" Q900 installed last night. Looks good but have only played it with at this point. Need to go look for 8K demo content that I can load up via USB. Tried to load the Prime Video app, but all UHD content does not play -- goes to pure black screen, only non-UHD content plays. Seems like either a bug specific to this model or maybe all of the Q9-type models are having this and it's an Amazon issue. Anyway, that was the only way to view HDR10+ content that I'm aware of, so still looking for good demo content. UHD BD HDR works well so far, but there are no HDR10+ discs yet.

I don't think the HDR on amazon is actually HDR10+ yet. I also have the same issue as you with UHD content on prime. Just a black screen so im guessing its most likely on the whole range as I have the 75 and get the same.

It's fine on the Q9fn, so I'm assuming when you say Q9 you are referring only to the Q900r.

Wow congrats on your amazing purchase. It's hard to get much from pictures because it get limited by the camera and whatever we are looking on to view the pics, but they look very sharp and colorful . I want to know your thoughts on motion, uniformity, DSE, watching at various resolutions with HDR and non HDR, black detail, how black the blacks, what gaming on it is like, what modes you've tried and settled into, etc, etc.

The new Amazon FireTV Stick 4K does HDR10+. Along with Dolby Vision, and HDR10.

Yes, so last night I setup the new Fire Stick 4K, plugged it directly into One Connect to eliminate any HDMI weirdness, and the Fire TV identified the playing video as "Ultra HD HDR" in the scrubber region.... but there was nothing on the Samsung side or the Amazon side that I could find to identify it as HDR10+. Visually determining whether something is HDR or HDR10+ at this point without a definitive marker seems unwise.

The fact that it played HDR at all was however an advance over the built-in Amazon app that still goes pure black screen playing Ultra HD content.

This is all shaping up as quite promising. Maybe this (or its successor) is the display that ultimately replaces my 88" KS9810 from 2016, though I hate to lose the 3" (TWSS). This, or the eventual 88" OLEDs...

Im surprised that they didn't offer this in 88 inch and stepped down to 85 inch for this model.

I'd have to assume that they are working on a bigger panel for the successor.

Still its worth taking the 3 inch viewing hit for it, although we will see larger sizes coming in the next year or two.

I assume it has something to do with the fab/glass supplier and their set up. But yeah - hopefully when I'm ready to get another display I won't have to go smaller.

Any idea how to play native 8K files via USB? It was mentioned that USB is currently the only way to play native 8K. I downloaded a bunch of youtube 8K files from the original sources and you can choose either 8K WEBM or 8K MKV. I have tried both and I just get the message that this file type is not supported when trying to play them using the USB.

Since there are very few owners(you being one of the first), your best bet is to ask Samsung directly.

From the thread, we can gather that it is available in UK and USA. May be few other EU countries and S.Korea. Here in Canada it is supposed to show up in 2019.

The user manual states which files are supported. Page 154 specifically. WEBM is only supported up to 4k.

Looks like it will only play 8k files that use HEVC. Also, the bitrate is capped at 100 mbps.

If you're seriously considering playing high quality videos digitally, I can't recommend ever using the TVs internal player. Always a PC or an OPPO.

The current OneConnect does not support 8K via HDMI, so that's all out. You either find a way to play it via USB or you don't play 8K. At CEDIA, the guy said they were using USB, but no idea what format. I have tried a few casually and have not yet found a working 8K format.

Samsung has promised current buyers will be upgraded next year to support 8K via HDMI presumably via an upgrade or swap out of the OneConnect box.

But the fact they had it working via USB at CEDIA makes me want to get it working now for demo purposes.

I’m really curious as how you guys find the viewing angles on the 75” Q900r (not the 85”). I often sit very close to the screen (1.5-2m) and can clearly see the contrast drop towards the edges on my Q9FN 65”, especially black turning a bit gray in darker scenes. How would you say they comapir, does Q900r improve on this?

Got it working. Had to use Handbrake to re-encode YouTube 8K downloads as HEVC. Looks good. Next step, finding an HDR10+ 8K demo file.

That so called "review" reads like an ad, they worked in every buzzword for the Q900R it's all hype. It may as well have been written by Samsung.
