I am having an 85" Sony 950G installed this coming Wednesday. How many hours is it recommended before I have a professional calibration done on the display.

Is it safe to have the Best Buy calibrators do the calibration?

Thank you for your time.

Are you refering to the 10-point settings or per color adjustment settings? Sorry, I'm a little confused.
Editing, looked more closely the Rting website. Now understand. Put in the point, then adjust, then the next point, and so on. Site says each individual unit is different though, so wonder if worth trying... may... can always reset. My reds are pretty saturated.

Thanks.

"Safe"? Sure, but I doubt it will be worth the money spent. I would recommend heading down the personal calibration via Calman autocal path before using Best Buy. If you are wanting a professional calibration, do that...get a real pro. There are plenty of real pro's out there and threads here to find them.

I've looked and looked at those auto-cal instructions and they're still not very clear to me.

To do autocal you will need:

1. Spectracal for Sony
2. A meter
3. A pattern generator

It would be cheaper to hire a professional to do it (not BB).

Please use the report post button to alert staff to problematic posts. Never quote or respond to them yourself.

Panasonic DP-UB820 -> Yamaha CX-A5100 -> Sony XBR-75X940C; Mediabridge 6' and 15' HDMI cables.

For Sony the only pattern generator needed is having an HDMI output for your laptop. Calman has the patterns built in as long as your laptop supports HDMI output and has either Intel or nVidia graphics (although Portrait Studios is working on AMD support).

Cool. So, I tried RTINGS settings and ended up with a nasty greenish white. This is why I altered the R-Gain, G-Gain, and B-Bias. Now, I have a pretty good white balance and the picture is still great. You will reaaly have to watch a lot of different content. If you are using netflix, try watching the seven deadly sins (very colorful/bright tone), Black Summer (dark tone), Santa Clarita Diet (Vivid), Blue Planet 2, etc.. in order to test settings out. Doing so will help you settle on what you like.

Messing with bias on a Sony is a no-no...but if you are happy that's all that matters.

Help

Hello all - I’m a long time reader but rarely have I ever posted. Learned sooo much over the years from all of you!

I’m in a state of paralysis by analysis after reading countless pages of posts on here along with all kinds of reviews online. I’m torn between a Sony 85” X950G and the Samsung 82” Q90R. 85% of my usage is sports (MLB, UFC, NFL) and during NFL season that’s when most of my entertaining goes on with guests viewing from angles. The other 15% is some directv and 4K content via nvidia shield with various apps. My space is a loft consisting of a wide floor plan so when guests are over they sit at angles as extreme as 45 - 55 degrees and up to 15 - 18 feet away. I do have a large window to the side of the TV thats about 4X8 feet that faces west. When I’m personally watching it’s from 12 feet centered up.

Side note: the extra 3” of screen is appealing in the Sony along with their color accuracy and the Samsungs antiglare and angle viewing is also appealing along with it’s deep darks. I currently own a Samsung 82” UN8000. Thanks for the help!

The first 65” 950G I had would spontaneously reboot itself about twice an hour. I tried every troubleshooting tip imaginable, but nothing helped. I exchanged it for another one, which has been working perfectly for several months with no reboots. Perhaps we both got one from a “bad batch”?

Watched my first 4K streaming last night using the Amazon Prime App that is in the 950G. After a while the sound just would drop out. I'd turn everything off and the sound would come back, but then soon again the sound would drop out. Very frustrating!

I've done an internet search to see if there are any fixes, Apparently a common problem but I couldn't find a ready fix (might have something to do with the Dolby settings?).

My 950G is connected to an Onkyo RZ630. Both new, All connected via Pro Certified HDMI cables. TV-AVR thru ARC ports. My internet is blazing fast, fiber optic, so that's not the issue..

Love the 4K video image.

Anyone run into this issue and know a fix?

Thanks.

I don't have any help. But I will tell you after a screen freeze on my 900f (then a permanent grey spot) I quit using native apps and use a ATV. Streaming is best left to a dedicated streaming box or stick.

Thanks, Tommy. Quick update: called Sony support. They were super, but don't know if the issue is fixed. Viewed a 4K YouTube video, with no issue, but then it took a long time for the issue to manifest in the Prime Video app. Sony support took control of my TV and uninstalled and reinstalled the Prime Video app. Maybe this will solve things.

Also we noted that my Firmware is not up to date, despite the fact that the TV thinks it is. Apparently it can take a week or two for the tv to realize there is an available update via the network. So we tried downloading the update from the Sony website and doing the firmware update via the couple of thumb drives I have. Alas. the tv could not see the update file on any of the thumb drives despite our trying various formats for the drives (Mac OS, EX FAT, MS DOS (FAT). I am on a Mac, so this may be the issue. The TV could see the drives sometimes, just not the content. So I will wait until the tv recognizes there is a Firmware update available via the network (on the web).

I hope the Prime Video reinstall resolved things... next option would be to unplug all, including the HDMI cable to clear the ARC signal, if the issue happens again.

Or if my Sony Blu Ray player is capable of 4K (seems to be) maybe use that to watch 4K content on Prime. The AVR does 4K passthrough, so should work.

Crossing fingers.

OK, I know it's been asked plenty, but what is the best out of the box settings? I just got it in and I am already absolutely impressed by this thing.

Is the blooming really that bad on this TV? I love watching subtitle movies and hate to see that on it.

Longtime lurker and I seldom post. I started out looking at the X900F last year but didn't buy it. My parents were in the market for a new tv in January and they bought it off of my recommendations and have been happy with it. I waited for the newer generation to come out and after a few more months of consideration, I bought a Sony 65" X950G on Friday. This replaced a Sony 55" HX929 that is still running strong and has since been relocated to a different room. I got it mounted on the same tilting mount that I used on my old tv, found some picture settings online and tweaked them a bit but need to spend some time and dial them in more. At any rate, I'm very impressed with this television so far and I expect it to serve me well in my family room for several years.

Is there anything I should test on the tv now to ensure that there aren't any problems or issues with it? One thing I noticed the other day, on the very right hand side of the tv closest to the bezel, there is a thin vertical strip of picture that does not seem to be in sync with the rest of the program on some channels. I changed the channel and it seems to go away. Also, I have noticed some blooming, but it doesn't bother me too much and I think I need to tweak the settings more - I'd appreciate some help in figuring out which settings those might be, and any other tips you guys might have. Thanks!

Looking for some opinions - debating between a 82" Q90R or the 85" 950G. 85% of my use is sports via Directv box sitting in front of the TV 12 feet back. I have 4X8 foot window in the room. Which should I purchase?

That's tough. Normally I would suggest seeing them both in person and getting a knowledgeable sales rep to hookup a player and disc with you armed with settings (perhaps from rtings) in hand to do quick calibration on both and check them both out. Problem is you'll have a hard time seeing both sets in those sizes in most stores. What do you have close to you in terms of brick and mortar? Both sets aren't exactly inexpensive so I'd go view the model and biggest size you can in person.

No, I cannot say I'm 100% happy with the display, unfortunately. The black levels are not spectacular, the blooming is quite obvious, and it's very reflective. Very distracting. It does do a lot right, but for my usage needs for a 100% dedicated gaming display, it does fall short.
Hmm. Maybe with 85 inches bias lighting would work? Considering the panel will also brighten up the room more than 55'' does? What do you think?

Everyone says Sony is better at upscaling and image is sharper. Ok, I was comparing Q90R to X950G and find out that sample upscaling images don't look right.

Here Q90R:

https://i.rtings.com/images/reviews/...080p-large.jpg

And X950G:

https://i.rtings.com/images/reviews/...080p-large.jpg

Now check the bottom left where WAQUOIT BAY is written. And also RTINGS words on the right bottom. As you would see it's so blurry with X950G that almost impossible read the text. Not just upscaled 1080p, but it's same with 4K image too.

https://i.rtings.com/images/reviews/...g-4k-large.jpg

https://i.rtings.com/images/reviews/...g-4k-large.jpg

What are your thoughts? Rtings did a mistake when capturing the image or what? I mean even X850f looks better:

Hello there. Are you happy with your TV so far?

Flatpanel's review confirms your observation. With X-Wide Angle technology or without it contrast appears to similar. This time Sony did it right. (Implemented this technology without affecting picture contrast drastically.) Flatpanel rated 75'' as 4700:1 and Rtings rated 55'' as 4800:1. (Though Rtings test it with Local dimming set to Max, Flatpanel set to Medium.)

Thanks in advance!
Just seeing if anyone knows anything about this. I called Sony and they are clueless.

Use case is need IR to change volume on a Sonos Playbar - can't figure out where and how to make that work. Anyone know anything?

So I've looked around, but I'm unsure of how to get this tv to RGB at 60hz in Nvidia Control Panel? Anybody help, please?

Is it safe to have the Best Buy calibrators do the calibration?

Thank you for your time.
Years ago when bb started doing calibrations they used certified ISF techs in the area. No idea what they are doing now.

I think it's better to do it yourself, but your looking at a Spyder 5 pro ($150?) + Calman Home for Sony ($145?). You will also need a laptop or device like an android phone with hdmi out or a fire stick. Mobile forge works as a pattern generator. The Calman app also has one built in too.

I prefer doing it myself so I can recalibrate if something goes wrong down the line, and get the 20 point gs adjustment VS standard 10. 20 points opens up with the Calman Home for Sony purchase. No idea if an ISF tech or BB can get that without using Calman.

thank you for your reply. This is what I've been going to, but I can't get anything beyond 4.2.0. I thought Hdmi connections were supported on this model
