A rep showed me the 75X950G but suggested Samsung for anti-glare since the display is near large east-facing windows. Thoughts? (Again, upgrading from a 4 year old XBR 70x850B).

I thought 75 and 85 XBR950G have Very good anti reflective mechanism due to x wide angle. Rtings score for 65 and lower is okay but they mentioned 75 and higher are better and should be comparable to z9f which is only 2.3%

Wondering if it even has x1 ultimate but Sony doesn’t disclose that to sell the X950G at a much higher premium.
I believe the 85" X850G is FALD. What is the 85" X850G? What is direct lit but not FALD? So confused...
However I also believe it has the X1 processor (not extreme, not ultimate). Nothing wrong with the regular ol X1, though...

I'll say that the Z9F definitely isn't great with reflections. It doesn't bother me because I'm used to all TV's having issues with reflections... but it does have a reflective screen, and if anything, the X-Wide angle layer makes the reflections worse, well, more interesting at least lol.

It's pretty well known that the new high-end Samsung's have the best anti-reflective properties (Q80 and Q90).

I doubt its the regular X1, Sony claimed the reason the 900e didn't get DV was because the X1 processor in the 900e wasn't powerful enough, or did Sony maybe not give us the real story?

I was curious so I checked.. looks like it's actually a new processor.. "X1 HDR 4K Processor"

So they've upgraded the regular X1, but I'm sure it's not as powerful as the X1E and X1U. Still, nice.

I think the main issue with the X850G is that it's not a FALD panel. Kind of confusing since Sony says "direct lit" on their spec sheet, so to be honest I'm not sure how it works. I think it isn't FALD but at the same time, how could it not be?

Exactly. Given full Dolby vision support on X850G I believe either Sony lied before about X900e or they are lying now about x850G.

I am seriously wondering if I should just buy X850G given the very low gain of X950G for double the price at 85 inch range and then sell out next year to upgrade again to X1000H

Hrmm, maybe worth considering the Samsung 82" Q80R then <edit> (Although it looks like Q80R owners have quite the time dialing in their settings... </edit>

There is a question over the internet: How many zones does our 950G have? 48 (same amount as its predecessor) or 60?

I am quite happy with my 950G. I'm on my second. The first one I exchanged under warranty for coming with a lot of DSE. What I didn't like was the fact that Sony pulled out of Cinema Pro Mode. For me it was the most calibrated mode for watching movies. The Cinema Mode present in the "G" resembles the "Cinema Home" of the "F".

Sony X850G review -

Quote:
the huge tv screen is coated with a semi-gloss finish and is illuminated with direct-lit leds with frame dimming. Not to be confused with full-array direct-lit leds with local dimming. Local dimming allows for localized dimming of the led zones on any given area of the tv’s screen, whereas frame dimming does not have this capability.

Interesting. I have no idea how frame dimming would/could work on a backlit (not edgelit) TV. I'm going to create a thread and ask!

I'm thinking of buying the UK model of this TV (55XG9505) to supercede my 2014 Samsung HU7500 4k TV. Can I ask owners to please confirm the following for me (UK store salesmen have no clue and don't even offer me a remote to try with the display TV)

1. I believe this TV does not have any adjustment for audio sync (whereas my other TV's do). How does this TV perform with movies playing from an external USB drive, blu-ray player and satellite box regarding a perfect audio/video sync?

2. With my current Samsung 55HU7500 4k TV (2014) I am constantly swapping between two motion modes - "clear" for soaps and sports, and "custom, with de-blur on +10, de-judder on +10" for 1080i satellite broadcast TV and Blu-ray (24fps). I'm one of the few people that actually like the smooth soap opera effect and hate any kind of judder, stutter, or flickering screen with black frame insertion and so on. I'd be purchasing this 2019 Sony TV in the hope that I can leave its motion control on one setting for everything to get an always smooth picture whatever the source. I'll soon be upgrading my satellite TV box (Sky UK) for their new Q box which can be set to output all SD/HD channels in 4k UHD so I presume this is the way to go to get the most pleasing picture. I would have gone the OLED route by I tend to leave Sky News or CNN on in the background and my last plasma has the CNN logo burned in for every channel, so once bitten....

3. Is there a way to level or normalise (limit) the sound from the TV's digital output so that commercials don't play at twice the volume?

I have never been happy with auto-dimming on my Samsung as it dims white writing on a black screen, and I never watch TV in a darkened room so I doubt if I'll even have auto-dimming turned on on my new Sony TV. And I assume the picture is at least as bright as on my current 2014 Samsung for when I'm viewing in a very sunlit room.

Thanks for your advice!

Question for X950G Owners

1. Does X950G have similar feature as Samsung OneRmote? I.e., control Apple TV 4K with TV remote, activate Apple TV by just pressing an icon and anytime go back to TV home by pressing the home button? I find it very convenient on my Q70R.

2. Does it support Alexa/google home to control soundbar volume connected via HDMI ARC? That's where Q70R fails. Alexa integration only works for built in TV volume. But as soon as I switch to Sound bar, Alexa stops controlling volume level.

Asking as I found some dead pixels on my Q70R (and the reflection level is terrible) and planning to return it and considering Q80R 82" vs. 85" X950G.

Upscaling performance of X850G vs. Samsung AI Upscaling

Anyone who owns both Sony X950G with X1 Ultimate (or X1 extreme) and a 2019 Samsung QLED TV that comes with AI Upscaling? Any comparison between AI Upscaler vs. X1 Ultimate?

Recently got a bunch of Doc Mcstuffins DVDs from Disney rewards site. The first thing I did was to put those on my Plex server (no piracy, personal collection). I was using Apple TV 4K Plex app to play those. It expectedly looked fuzzy. My Apple TV 4K match content setting is on. So I expected Samsung to upscale. I didn't expect any better. But today I thought to try the Samsung built in Plex player. The quality is night and day different. If not 4K, the content definitely looks like 1080p!! It's amazing how sharp the contrast is. This is a 75" Q70R. All these years I heard Sony has the best upscaler. Is Sony X1 ultimate even more magical? I don't even know how much more to expect from upscaling 480p contents. Did Samsung AI upscaler finally catch up?

Any suggestions for a soundbar for my X950G? I mainly watch sports, a few tv shows, and movies. I don't listen to music. I know about not talking prices but I don't want to spend more than $500.

I can't really compare to higher end models, but this tv from my previous, a vizio D Series is absolutely night and day. The upscaling on this thing really is a sight. It really does almost look 4k to me on certain modes.

hey guys, just got my 65" 950g, really like it. One thing i am having issues with is HDR from an Nvidia Shield. If i set the TV to HDR Mode: HDR10 it looks great with HDR content but not much else, too dark. If i set it to HDR Mode: Auto, it looks good for everything but HDR. I would like it to change to HDR mode when detected but it doesn't seem to do that. Like the Shield home screen is detecting as HDR and again is too dark. Any ideas?

I am planning on doing the 65” 950g. Can the factory stand be swapped out for a narrower set of feet that bolts toward the center of the back of the tv?

There are a number of stands that use the VESA mounts. Check Amazon or BB sites.

I don't know how big your stand is, but I have a 48" stand and the feet are a perfect fit. I didn't need the center stand that I bought. 😏

Just bought an 85" X950G last week. Found an awesome price online. Trucking company picked it up today. I can't wait to get it installed and running. It will also let me finally mount my Nakamichi soundbar. Will post impressions once it's installed. It's going to be replacing a 52" Samsung PNF8500 plasma.

Is anybody else watching MNF via the ESPN app in the TV? Resolution looks good but I'm getting a weird stuttering effect, skipping frames constantly. ESPN app on my iPad looks fine, connected to the same home network.

Any way to disable the "TV Menu" popup?

Can anyone tell me if there is a way to keep the "TV Menu" from popping up every time I turn on the TV? I'm referring to the menu that appears in the bottom third of the screen, rolling up from the bottom. It has icons for all of the buttons on the TV Remote. It would be useful if I was wanting to control a set top box, but that is not the case - I have a TiVo so they are useless. Of course it eventually goes away but I'd rather not see it at all. I called SONY and they said it could not be disabled...but I wonder.....

Thanks,
Rob from AZ

No, the TV refuses to accept audio signal without video signal.

Just came across a mention of TVout library for Arduino. Dug out my UNO, compiled a pre-packaged example that comes with TVout in Arduino IDE, soldered a couple of resistors to a female RCA connector, plugged into Arduino and viola: it works! The TV recognized the video signal and also played the audio from my source. The sound quality is underwhelming, but it works.

Best regards,
Andrey

I called SONY and they said it could not be disabled...but I wonder.....

Thanks,
Rob from AZ
Sounds like you did the IR Blaster setup.

Maybe you can try to disable the IR Blaster function. HOME > Settings > External inputs > Cable/Satellite box control setup > Control with TV remote > Off

This should remove the TV menu.

BTW you can try to manually set this up from these menus and select using the "Setup by model number"

The one thing to remember is the remote includes IR Blaster functionality and needs to be pointed at the Set-top box when trying to change channels, etc.

Thanks! That did the trick! I had talked to two people at SONY who insisted this was not possible… Sometimes I wonder why I even bother with calling the vendor.
