Did you use a specific test to determine DSE? I'd be curious to try out whatever you used.
I don't have any DSE on my 75" either. The test is to just use various shades of uniform grey screen to look for color shifts or darkened/lightened areas.

Exactly this. I only noticed it when looking for it during a hockey game. Otherwise I don't see it on my 65 nor am I trying to see if it's there.

Its just like banding, some people see and some people do not. Could also be they have panels without an issue as well......

Warranty Claim Update on 75Q9FN

As expected, the 3rd party repair company came on Monday and was here for 5 minutes to confirm my panel needed to be replaced. Said they would contact Samsung and order the part and i would hear from them by the end of the week. Well today i contacted Samsung warranty reps via online chat and i went "fishing" and gave my info and told them i heard the panels were on backorder and they checked for me and came back and confirmed they were on backorder and the fix had been cancelled and the case has been escalated to the exchange department. The rep doesn't have anymore information and said that the Exchange department would contact me as soon as possible. So i guess I'm on a waiting list. If the other poster is anything to go by, they may be exchanging for 2019 sets. So as expected, a Q90R may be incoming.

I was a little concerned when they delivered the TV and I saw the panel code but my concern was unfounded. It's a pretty clean panel.

I’m thinking of getting the Q90R 75”. I have now an LG E6 65”. I am concerned the Sammy will be way too bright. I’ve tried the 65” and when I lowered just the backlight setting it seemed to not look as good. So is there anyway to help get the picture OLED like brightness without looking worse then in default standard or movie mode settings? Is there a way to compensate for the lower backlight?

If I take my E6 and use it on default expert dark or default expert bright it looks fine. On the Sammy 65” I took default standard and default move. They look fine. Much brighter then the E6. But when I lowered backlight to try to be close to E6 in how bright they are the Sammy looks much worse. It’s based on how bright not like worse colors etc. I’m confused why such a huge difference. If I lowered the OLED light setting it got darker but the rest of the picture seemed to scale better then on the Sammy 65”. So I’m just curious if there’s anyway to compensate?

Also I noticed on the Sammy that white was too bright compared to the rest of the picture. Like say a car is driving in the dark towards the screen and it’s headlights are on. This is too bright compared to the rest of the picture. Is there a way to make things more even?

I’m wanting to get the Q90R 75” but I’m scared.

kinda hard to explain since I'm not an expert. but gamma is the biggest adjuster to contrast on the tv. But you may also want to consider a professional calibration to get the contrast where you want it to be. Doing so will adjust the white points and the tv wont be overly bright a nd will usually improve the image at the same time.

Gamma is kind of complicated, but what you are basically doing is changing the curve of how black ramps up to white throughout the entire grayscale. Practically speaking, adjusting this in this way will somewhat change how intense pure white appears but shadow detail will look darker at the lower end of the scale.

Won the panel lottery. Bought a really cheap Q9 and had insane vertical banding, and DSE. Returned it and got a 65” Q90R Version FA02. I don’t know if that’s the “good panels” but I have 0 vertical banding, and a very small very very light and very tolerable amount of DSE in the upper right corner. I know far less about hues and saturation, and don’t need to. I am actually happy with my purchase, and that’s what matters when spending so much on a TV.

One question I do have is now to remove the default processing of my image in game mode. I don’t want it trying to scale my 1080P image to 4K it ruins the image in my opinion. Just square the pixels and deliver the image as intended please.

I expect to get my 65Q90 in a week or two for a replacement for the 65JS9000. I've been reading this forum from the beginning, and have made it to page 20 with no real useful info. One question I have are my HDMI cables. I upgraded my cables in June of 2015 when I got the JS9000, have there been any changes in the last 4 years where I should get new HMDI's?

If so, i usually buy from Monoprice. Any recommendations?

Thanks!!

There's no way to disable the TV's scaling.

It's really a future proofing upgrade to get the cables now. There have been several updates to HDMI since 2015. In 2015, the latest standard was HDMI 2.0a and since then we have had versions 2.0b and 2.1. If you want to get the latest features and be able to make use of the highest transmission bandwidth between devices, as they become available, then you should upgrade to cables that support the latest standards.

It looks like the highest HDMI input resolution this TV will support (at this time) is 4K @ 120 FPS with Color Depth of 4:2:0 which a cable from 2015 should be able to handle with no problem.

The 82’ also has a different FALD arrangement, with 40x12 zone layout instead of 30x16 in the smaller sizes. We don’t know the reasons as to why Samsung chose the different layout for the 82”.

As far as connections and settings go...I’m currently using Rtings picture settings and overall I’m quite satisfied with the results. For connections on your Xbox, you will need to run it direct to the one connect box, if you want to use the gaming features like VRR, and then ARC back to the 6500h. Everything else should be fine running through the AVR and then over to the Q90.

Enjoy!
I really appreciate you for taking the time to respond and help. You are a great example of why this is the best place on the web for home theater enthusiasts.

FWIW, I didn't detect any real calibration change in SDR/Movie/Warm2/BT.1886+0/RGB-Limited mode after updating to firmware 1303, but it seems like there was a noticeable white balance change in SDR/PC/Game/BT.1886-3/RGB-Full mode.

Hi. Excuse the late reply please. I recorded the 24 hr Lemans and I’m about 7 hrs left in the race.

So would calibration help my concerns on the white being too bright and the image looking worse when I lower just the backlight? I liked the 65” when i had it except it was way too bright and lowering backlight ruined the picture.

One thing I don’t understand is why lowering backlight on the Sammy to get like my E6 you can tell a big difference in quality on the Sammy vs it’s default settings. It totally looks like you’ve lowered how bright the picture is. So it’s close to my E6 now.

But the E6 don’t look darkened. It’s default settings are fine. But the Sammy now close to E6 brightness, there’s a big difference. You can tell you’ve lowered the backlight. So it loses its impact greatly.

After contacting Samsung, a reset fixed the issue. Now the adaptative brightness of the intelligent mode is working again for all my sources.

Another plastic wrapping

Hi guys, I haven't seen this mentioned before, but on my 82" Q90R, there is a very thin transparent plastic wrapping around the top and side bezels. It's the part of the bezels that you see from the sides of the TV and not the front. If you reach under either bottom corner of the TV about an inch or so in from the edge, you can pull it up with your fingernail and pull off the one large plastic strip that extends to just around the corner of the other side. It doesn't make a huge difference in how the sides of the bezels look, but it does make it a bit less shiny.

Not getting video from receiver

Hi guys, Not sure if this is a TV issue or my receiver issue, but I'm posting here and in the Emotiva thread as well. I have an Emotiva XMC-1 connected from its HDMI 2 output to the Q90R HDMI 3 input. Both are ARC. I have an Nvidia Shield TV connected to the Emotiva HDMI 1 input and an Oppo 203 on the Emotiva HDMI 2 input. Everything worked fine from either source for 3 days until today. Now I can get sound to pass, but not video. Also, after switching the Samsung input to HDMI 2, 3, and 4, the TV no longer recognizes the receiver as the XMC-1 and now just calls it an unrecognized device. I'm on the newest firmware for both devices and reset the TV, but no luck. If I connect the sources directly to the TV, they work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

So apparently there's a 55" Q90R in the UK but not in the US? Is that correct?

If you want to get the latest features and be able to make use of the highest transmission bandwidth between devices, as they become available, then you should upgrade to cables that support the latest standards.

It looks like the highest HDMI input resolution this TV will support (at this time) is 4K @ 120 FPS with Color Depth of 4:2:0 which a cable from 2015 should be able to handle with no problem.
Thanks for info. Might as well swap HDMI's while I'm making the change over. Monoprice HDMI's are so reasonable, not like it's breaking the bank to do so.

I have purchased the Q9FN and not the Q90r.
Having spent some time with both sets at my dealer with the sets running alongside each other I was able to see the distinct differences between these sets.
The Q9FN definitely had a superior black level and contrast (as born out by Rtings.com review)
The Q90r has a superb viewing angle unlike the Q9FN which really only shines when sitting virtually parallel to screen.
All other parameters seemed to be equal apart from the extreme edge of the Q90r which definitely looked slightly darker.
On the other hand I did notice some DSE on the Q9FN
It seems that Samsung like Sony have made sacrifices to accommodate the wide viewing angle technology.
Now if Samsung could produce a version of the Q90r without this feature then we would have the contrast and black levels of the Q9FN plus the small, non picture related improvements over the Q9FN
