I don't recall all my other advanced settings, but I believe I have backlight at 18. Increasing that does not seem to help with the darkness of Standard mode.

Make sure all auto eco modes and intelligent scene options are turned off, especially the one that automatically dims the display based on ambient light. I'm sorry i can't remember what they are called, I don't have access to my set right now.

That would stink if they did not start putting those in the fresh builds. Never know. One day here someone will be able to test HDMI 2.1 when we get a HDMI 2.1 output devise.....

Do you use all out of the box settings in "Movie" mode? Also, does anyone use RTings calibration for the Movie mode?

page 145 of the manual states that it can do 4k 120 at all subsampling levels, 8k 24/30 at all subsampling and 8k 60 at 4:2:0 10 bit...cant wait for some actual hdmi 2.1 gear

whats weird to me is that the new q800t doesn't advertise hdmi 2.1 or atsc 3.0 on Samsungs page, two huge selling points

I did all the calibrations from many site sources and after they all looked "not the best". I then began to tweak Standard & Movie settings to fit what works best for me. Its close to what is suggested but with slightly diffrent tweaks. Cant remember what they actually are but I mainly watch TV in Standard mode and switch to Movie when watching Movies.

LOL Hopefully it's a one person TV or "what works best for me" is always OK for everybody else or it's just too bad for them. This is why the engineers come up with a few picture modes like Natural and Standard and defaults for everything else.

I just spoke to a Samsung customer service rep and of course they gave me conflicting info from what another told me a while ago.

Now they are saying that the One Connect box is future proofed and will need a software update to enable the HDMI 2.1 feature. Also, advised that instead of them using the Port 3 (ARC) for it they'll update the Port 4 for the feature whenever the update happens in the future. I honeslty dont know what to believe at this point and think they'll probably never give an update in software or a repleacement One Connect box Sigh...

No, I never use out of the box settings. When I switched from Standard mode to Movie mode, I had to change several other user controls to get back a good picture. This is just routine. No, I didn't use Rtings calibration -- I use my eyes. I don't use instruments, but I've had a bunch of Samsung flat screens, and I'm pretty good at setup, if I do say so.

New owner

I received my set last week from Crutchfield, great price and service as always. I just wanted to check-in with other owners. I have read through most of the posts, so no big questions at this time. I am thoroughly enjoying the set so far, so I apparently got a good panel. I find it hard to believe there is no definitive answer on HDMI 2.1, although not being a gamer, I am not too concerned.

Well, I received a full refund from Samsung for the TV. Very happy with the process and outcome. I plan on purchasing one of the 2020 sets when they are released. Using my Z9D until that time.

PLEASE HELP GUYS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This TV is driving me insane.
Just Got the 75" version and managed to assemble it and hoist it up on the stand by myself messing up my back in the process. Didn't want to impose on friends coming over to help given all that's going on. Please see the issues below.

  • Can't enable HDR in Windows 10 through my gaming/rendering rig with 2 Nvlinked RTX 2080 TI's ( HDR worked fine on my c8 OLED )
  • Nvidia Control Panel Recognizes Q900R only as a 4K TV forcing me to create custom resolutions to get 8K
  • Got [email protected] to test OK and it's saved in Nvidia's custom resolution presets list, [email protected] tested OK but after saving it to the list, it doesn't show up so I can't apply it. See attached
Nvidia drivers and tv firmware are both up to date. Could the Connect box being only HDMI 2.0 be causing this?

Been working on this for several hours now and could really use some advice.

sounds like your using hdmi 4 and have input select on. Other then that, I was under the assumption that no device currently sold can do 8k 60 because of the hdmi cable limitations of 18gbs. I thought we needed the new 48gps hdmi ,and of course the input has to be hdmi 2.1 also. Could it have been a glitch saying it was compatible in the first place? Can you do 4k 120? Sorry, i dont actually have a high end computer, yours sound awesome though

Thanks. PC is actually for work rendering nvidia iray videos. Having 2 RTXC 2080 TI's doubles the rendering speed with out the need of a nvlink bridge. The PC the company gave has a 3 year old p5000 Quadro GPU. My rig renders about 5 times faster. Once I get up to 10 posts, I'll share a link of one of the scenes I did. Got the NVlink so I could could benefit using the 2 GPU's for gaming.

What's "input select"? It's a mode in the settings?

Just noticed when it's in 8k, the TV indicates it's in 3840 x 2160 UHD. Watching an 8K video via the pc on Youtube, the 8k icon is showing on the YT video but the system info says it's still in 4K. See the attached pic.

Hope I'm not violating anything by posting this as a new thread. Want to get input from more Samsung owners as to why I can't get windows to recognize the TV as HDR.

Go to settings, general, external device manager then turn on input signal plus on any input you want HDR. Make sure its in hdmi 4 to your computer. It will say the resolution and input signal on in the info tab when its turned on. Hope this helps, if not hopefully someone with your setup will respond.

Nothing so far, I only hope they will give us an option to upgrade to one connect box 2020 by June / July since they can't seem to manage a software / codecs update.

Thanks, that worked. I actually tried using that previously, but the screen turned all red.

Does yours stay in HDR mode? When I turn it on, the screen turns black and it toggles back to off.

yes mine stays in HDR mode but I'm using just a ps4 pro and xbox x. Hopefuly its just a weird glitch on windows that gets an update. the only other thing I can think of is make sure its the best hdmi cable you can find. I had a cable I thought was good on my apple tv, and it couldn't pass 4:4:4. New cable that had the certified logo and its worked fine ever since.

Appears HDR only kicks in if you have nVidia set to [email protected] and it looks horrible. Played around with the limited settings on the TV because of being in PC mode and nothing improved the quality. HDR on my C8 OLED looked horrible through windows 10 too, but LG released firmware that rectified it.

Decided to take out one of the 2080TI's and plug into my older i7 5930K rig and hook it up to c8 OLED so both TV's are side by side. To my surprise the OLED in SDR mode looks better than the Q900R in HDR mode using Pot Player and MPC-black. Switching the PC's to each makes no difference.

Is it normal when switching to "standard picture mode" for the TV to look barely visible because it's so dark?

Again, hope I'm not violating rules by posting a separate thread asking for someone using this set exclusively through PC before packing it up and returning it. With all the positive reviews, there has to be something I'm missing.

I could only get [email protected] to work for HDR.

Have you adjusted games settings in the main menu? Its under input device manager. Theres some setting that can really jack up the picture. I leave black level enhancer to 0. As far as standard being too dark, haha, Im not sure what you mean. dark HDR content still has a dark appearance, and alot Id watch at night like say Carnival row....but Ive never thought I was missing detail in the dark. Cant stress enough how much a good hdmi cable is needed...8k is pushing the limits of current cables. So is 4k 120. Lots of videos of high end pc gaming on this set on youtube, so its def possible.

As far as gaming looking horrible, I think Gears 4 and 5 are some of the best looking content in HDR Ive seen...super impressive. Im getting deep blacks, and amazing highlights, really adds to the fun.

Thanks for your help man.

Holy Crap - I was just about to give up, then I started to play with nVidia settings. With HDR still on, I decided to not use the native resolution and selected the one just above at 4096 x 2160 and the screen got super bright. Went to check to see if HDR was still enabled and it was. The overscan must have unlocked something. To address the overscan, went to adjust desktop size to just 3850 x 2160. Going back to 3840 x 2160 would destroy HDR again. This freed up a lot of the settings like movie and natural modes and a bunch of other settings that were previously greyed out. Hopefully this post helps others pulling out their hair.

Just adding keywords so this post comes up first in the search results. Windows 10 washed out HDR fix faded, worse, SDR, Samsung, q900R, 8K, glitch.

Thanks man. Yeah, I must have gotten 6 hrs sleep the whole weekend trying to get this to work. Same thing happened with my C8 OLED with HDR looking bad. The french guy at Rtings.com helped me out on that one. Not having to worry about burn in is such a relief. When I saw burn in starting to form, I'd game in window mode at 3K and kept moving the window around. Gonna give the OLED to my mom. Can't get HDR to kick in at 8k. Went through the specs of the 2080ti and it can only do [email protected] via displayport 1.4. Need to wait for a DP1.4 to HDMI 2.1 adapter to come out, then maybe.

BTW, this is the original purpose of those 2 x 2080ti's. I work as an automotive engineer creating virtual prototype animation using CGI software with nVidia iRay rendering. Can't show you want I'm working on, but here's a sample with a car. This clip took about 10 minutes to render and entire scene is all computer generated.

Sorry bout the weird website. It's the only one I could find that doesn't require registration. As I mentioned, the company rig I was given had a 3 year old quadro that would have taken over an hour. Being able to game with the rig is an awesome bonus. My boss thinks CV19 is gonna get bad so my virtual prototyping group is gonna get really busy. Let's hope he's wrong.

wow, thats really impressive! That render time seems great
Im sure with some updates and adapters, the tv will work more seamlessly with actual 8k content, and of course with hdmi 2.1 inputs.

FWIW: I streamed YouTube 8K video via Google Chrome on my laptop -- wirelessly -- to my Q900RB. However, my laptop is not powerful enough to play it for more than 2 seconds before pausing 5 seconds at a time. Also, there is no way to check the source details on the television to confirm that it was officially outputting in 4320P (8K) ...
