This TV can dazzle even in the brightest scenes and strangely enough it didn't cause eye strain like I can experience on the Z and 940c. That was awesome.

I disable game mode for gaming as I want the highest quality image.

I would say to give it a try if you have the option to return it. Samsung may fix some of these things via firmware.. I received an update after I'd been using the tv for a few hours. I could tell they improved the subtitles blooming to a degree with that update.

Regardless of having an OLED in the house that my wife games on regularly, I'm not brave enough to shell out 5k for a 77" OLED due to my habits of mostly gaming + movies. That's more anxiety and work than I want to deal with.

I certainly understand where you are coming from.

If Samsung pushed a firmware today that fixed the blooming I would keep the Q900 no questions asked. The new Robin Hood sold me on the potential of HDR10+ so I'm less worried about losing Dolby Vision.

Fellow forum guru Dee (player02) says his Samsung buddies have told him something big that's coming to 2018/2019 sets but he isn't allowed to say yet. Says it should be 2-3 weeks or so.

Was it game mode that the metro picture was in? I wanted to ask because game mode on the Q9FN and Q900 Was terrible. They reduced the local dimming so much I never even bothered using it because it looked washed out and had blooming. In Standard mode which I gamed on my 2018 Q900 I pretty much never saw any blooming at all while gaming. I wonder if the new filter or wide angles causes more blooming on the Q900 2019 model or if it just needs software updates like the Q900 from last year did.

Something big that we already know about like iTunes ect or something big that it would be a complete surprise? It will probably be an ambient mode update or something

He mentions iTunes app in the video, so that's not the secret. I don't think it's gonna be Dolby Vision but you never know. But some other possibilities:

-eARC with Dts/Atmos .
- some type of hdmi 2.1 update

No sir, it only re-enabled after I performed a factory reset but I made sure to disable it again. You could definitely tell when it was on.

I was thinking about your experience with the 2018 model the whole time and wondering if my unit was defective. I wish someone else would chime in about their 2019.

I would be stoked for eARC or Dolby Vision. I think either one of those could really bring people in Samsung’s direction (at least buyers who do research on specific brand/model offerings).

Yeah I really don't think it will be Dolby vision although that would be the biggest news if they got that. Im guessing maybe eArc at the moment. Even that would do.

I’m wondering if last year’s HDMI ports are capable of handling eARC from a hardware perspective, though.

Do we think Dolby Vision is that unlikely? I was thinking that Samsung cave since it’s no longer producing 4K blu-ray players, leaving fewer possible devices capable of playing HDR10+ content. While I know it isn’t as important on sets with higher brightness, I’m wondering if they are hoping the Dolby Vision label might be able to sway some consumers away from LG/Sony.

Wouldn't it need the DV chip installed already? I can't imagine that would be on the 2018 sets and most likely not on the 2019 ones.

Oh ok. I didn’t realize that was tied to hardware.
I thought it was a firmware update to sets that supported HDR.

They could implement the software version like Sony does. It wouldn't surprise me if they do add it at some point. Fingers crossed.

Crap! Going to call Samsung

Best Buy is bringing me a replacement set Thursday. In all the TVs I’ve ever purchased, this is the first defective one I’ve ever had and it is by far the most expensive.

Examples of the issues I've seen on Lone Survivor: a single star in the night sky with a blob of black rotating around it because the TV can't figure out how to handle the dimming. An airplane flying through the night sky that looks like somebody is shining two spotlights on it. The TV can't decide where they should be so it just lights up the whole thing with a giant bloom for good measure. Daylight scene, coming down a sunlit mountainside in the early morning and one lone pine tree is just glowing while the soldiers are blooming.
Thanks for confirming the lack of color washout and contrast loss on the screen borders. That's a huge improvement vs. regular VA LCD panels.

Sounds like you can see the local dimming "working" and calling attention to itself. Older Samsung's had the same problem with visible brightness fluctuations in scenes where the local dimming algorithm couldn't decide what to do and caused some zones to flicker visibly (as if lit by a candle) even when there was no lighting changes in the scene. Usually worst in dimly lit indoor scenes. I think Vincent had some examples in his hdtvtest youtube channel last year. In my experience, Sony has the most "stable" local dimming algorithm out there where you really don't notice it at all - the downsize is that it's not very aggressive and won't produce as deep blacks in many cases. Pick your poison.

Maybe Your eyes didn't strain because of the two anti-reflective filter layers In addition wide viewing angle distributed light

Rather than having the whole light direct on the eye in addition the color volume causes color absorption of the light more

This is my analysis

I'll be able to chime in, in about a week or two. Well not on game mode, but anything else. I'm not a gamer. Just pulled the trigger on the 82 inch Q900. Got my fingers crossed it's better than my Sony 940E. I've been wanting to replace this TV for a while now. The wife and I were watching Batman v Superman last night and she got tired of me talking about how the bars were lighting up on a lot of the scenes. Here's to hoping this TV handles it better. Plus I just wanted to get into the 80+ inch screen size. But I know the wife wouldn't sign off on a TV more than $10k. I'm guessing the 8K OLED from LG is going to be pricey. Luckily, being a government employee I got the $1k off the MSRP.

Other than yours being a 940E, with mine being a 940D, our concerns and reasons for upgrade are exactly the same. I'm looking forward to your findings and have my fingers crossed the mission is a huge success.

IM personally hoping the Q950 ( in the UK ) is better than the Q900 2018 I had as that TV had very little bloom and from what iv read this is supposed to be even better with even deeper blacks. If the wide viewing angels have made it worse though it will most likely be going back so heres hoping lol. The Q900 was really really good with its dimming after the big update it got. Very little bloom in nearly all content. Now and again though the dimming would **** the bed and you would get a washed out scene that it looked like it was stuggling to do the dimming properly but this was very rare.

Does anyone who owns the 2019 model able to confirm there one connect box is HDMI 2.1. Is it on a single port... or all 4 ports? Can't seem to find that anywhere even though we have owners on here lol.

Will an owner tell me if the little "bump" I see in pictures at the lower right corner is the Remote IR receiver? My setup's center speaker might block the IR receiver if it's in the center.

Your going to have to look hard and close as the 82" has 19.5% more screen area

That's true, and it translates into a couple of extra degrees of viewing angle at my seating distance. But 75" is still a substantial upgrade in size over the 65" plasma I have now. But if a 77" OLED was going to be big enough then a 75" QLED should be. Plus the extra brightness and HDMI 2.1 support is a bonus. We shall see. I might regret not going bigger, I might not. It's 12" of viewing distance to get the same perceived size on the 75" as compared to the 82" based on my room layout.

On another note it looks like rtings.com has purchased a Q900 so we should get a review from them very soon. https://www.rtings.com/tv/suggestions

This is last years model though.. So it doesn't really help in this thread and how good the 2019 models are . There a European site so its the Q950 that we really need them to review. The Q90 would have been a better option as at least it has all 2019 features that the Q950 ( Europe ) and 2019 Q900 has.

There is already a ton of reviews for the 2018 Q900 and as someone who owned one for 3 months I can tell you that its a brilliant TV but still had more issues than I would like. Viewing angels is certainly one and the 2019 sets have fixed that. If they can improve the contrast and black level even more over the 2018 that would be good enough for me to purchase a Q950.
