How are the black levels? I'm always curious about peoples personal experience with this model in a very dark room. How does it handle blooming/light bleed into black bars in movies? Wondering how the real usage of HDR is too. I've heard mixed things about this model.

Black levels are excellent (to me at least) i upgraded from a sony w685 from 2013 to the q70r from 2019. And wow what a difference.

Tv is in my gaming room and i primarely use it in the dark, have to say that the black levels are great. There is a slight hint of blooming, but samsung created an algoritm so that if theres almost nothing on screen (lets say a white line of text) it slightly dims the backlight.

Okay Tv has arrived, few issues..

1. I cant mute it? When i press Mute it automatically unmutes itself after 1 second.. Am i missing some kind of setting?

2. The Audio sounds flat, even with my Soundbar connected via Optical which had great sound with my KU6000, the only option i get is PCM? The other 2 options are greyed out. On my old Tv i could select DTS Matrix or something which sounded awesome and cinema-like..

Okay the Mute mot working and the volume going up/down by 2 from 1 click had something to do with the Sky Q remote, i re-paired it to my Tv along with to the Soundbar via Sky Q again, even though i originally paired it when i got my Tv and it now works again..

So now i just need to solve how to get the Sound a bit more "Surround".

Samsung just dropped another $200 for the 82", now the 85" is $500 more than the 82". Does 3" worth another $500? Not worth it for me, $300 then yes. I'm going to purchase the 82"

I have the 82 inch connected to an HW-750 Samsung soundbar via HDMI-ARC. I have Direct TV connected to the soundbar via HDMI-1. When I shut things off using the DTV remote the TV and soundbar power down but when I turn things on using the DTV remote the DTV receiver turns on and the TV turns on but the soundbar does not.

Should it? and if yes what setting do I change to make it?

Thanks.

Picked up a new 75" Q70R a few days ago at Costco to replace a Sammy UN65JS850DFXZA that I bought back in 2016. All in, about the 8th Samsung TV I've purchased over the years.

Trying to replicate my previous setup: DirecTv/ Roku/ BluRay/ Firebox => Yamaha RXA-3050 Receiver => Television, using a single HDMI high-speed cable to the TV and, HDMI/ CEC / ARC. Worked pretty well on the older Samsung 65" using my DirecTv or Roku remotes to power the system on/ off, switch inputs, and control volume. Though, it was prone to the common 'switching' problem, where it would default to AV001 vs. an active source on startup. Device On/ Off, switching, volume, etc. all worked great though.

Haven't been able to get the new TV to behave in a similar manner. I've done tv/ receiver clean resets, switched to new cables, moved around HDMI ports, etc. Can't seem to get the boxes to turn on/ off, or the DirecTv remote to consistently control volume. Samsung's remote is flaky as well. I've read a bunch of threads w/ people having similar problems with a variety of equipment. I did have luck w/ an old Samsung soundbar that I hooked up- seems to turn on/ off/ change volume w/ the Samsung remote.

Question--- I have- has anyone had success running this TV in w/ a Yamaha receiver via HDMI/ CEC/ ARC? Any tricks to get this to work like it did on the old set? Would a fancier Logitech remote work, bypassing, HDMI control altogether?

I don't want to return this TV, but, if I can't get things to turn on/ off/ work seamlessly with the home stereo, I may have to see what Sony/ LG has these days...

FWIW- (you'll see my post right after yours asking a similar question related to my stereo receiver)- I did get my Samsung HW-H550 Soundbar to work w/ the new 75" tv, connecting HDMI port 4 (ARC) on the tv, and HDMI-OUT on the soundbar with an Amazon Basics high-speed HDMI cable, and setting the bar to D.IN.

On/ Off, Volume worked great with multiple remotes. Good Luck!

What size did you get? I picked up the 82Q7DR from Costco and it does not "appear" to have a screen protector film on it. Anyone else have this on the 82". I must say the gray uniformity on mine seems MUCH better than what they show on Rtings so DSE is a non issue. Watched Immortal Engines last night after setting the Amazon Fire to 12bit and WOW!! The HDR is just jaw dropping on this thing, however i'm coming from a 60" Sharp LC-60E78UN so take my impressions with a grain of salt.

I picked up the 82 and there was no protective film on the display. There was plastic around the bezel that I removed, but nothing else. I'm coming from an old Mitsubishi rear projection, so the difference is quite noticeable and am happy with my purchase so far. There is a little DSE, but nothing that would distract, or detract from my viewing pleasure. I got a great deal so I can't complain.

After the fact, I was reading online where any model over the Q60 ended up with the full screen film on it. A friend of mine bought the Q60 and it did not have one one it according to him.

This link from Abt show them taking it off of my set.

I had a protector on my 65" as well, but it didn't have a "pull tab" like in the video. It was hard to tell it even existed except for the bottom right corner that was peeling slightly.

I didnt even have the benefit of that. Really had to get up in its grill to see the edge of the film and the damn thing is so bright even with this film over the screen I was dubious about it being there at all.

Hello everybody, I have the 82 inch model and I’m interested in this “screen protector” thing. How do I see if I have it and it has to be removed? The screen just seems “right” and the reflections I see seems to be due to the anti-reflex treatment the panel has. The thing that makes me think that there could be an addiction protection (but there’s no advice of anything in the manual or on the panel itself) is that if you look at the panel in certain light conditions (sun) and being parallel to the panel from one of the sides there is a sort of “borealis aura effect” (don’t know how to explain better and in a photo it cannot be seen) and on the screen, that cannot be seen in other light conditions.

But if this is due to another screen protection, it’s really super well attached to the screen, there are no visible signs to rip it off.

Any thoughts?

Impressed with 480p upscaling

Recently got a bunch of Doc Mcstuffins DVDs from Disney rewards site. The first thing I did was to put those on my Plex server (no piracy, personal collection). I was using Apple TV 4K Plex app to play those. It expectedly looked fuzzy. My Apple TV 4K match content setting is on. So I expected Samsung to upscale. I didn't expect any better. But today I thought to try the Samsung built in Plex player. The quality is night and day different. If not 4K, the content definitely looks like 1080p!! It's amazing how sharp the contrast is. Anyone noticed this drastic difference of quality between built in vs. external player?

And more importantly, all these years I heard Sony has the best upscaler. I know the 2019 Samsung uses AI Upscaling. But is Sony X1 ultimate even more magical? I don't even know how much more to expect from upscaling 480p contents.

The Costco rebate is $75 more for the 85", so the difference is only $425 if purchased there.

Well that's three confirmed reports of no screen protector film on the 82" including mine. It looks like two are 82Q7DR Costco models and one is a 82Q70R Retail model.

On a separate note - I added some 6500k LED bias lighting (three sides) and it certainly makes what I believe is a positive difference in perceived image quality. I'm one of those that gets bad eye strain watching in a completely dark room.

Pro's: Does make blacks appear really "BLACK" and improves contrast to the eye.

Con's: The bezel and black bars really stand out by separating the image from the wall behind the TV.

I bought the remote so it can be turned off, and adjust low, mid and high brightness. Overall a fairly inexpensive and useful addition that I would recommend.

that's been the standard update log for all Samsung TV for about 5 years now. they never actually tell you what's updated.

Ok I got this TV and a few niggles ... but this is the most annoying :

How on earth do I prevent it adding the TV source to the hub every time the TV goes off?
I've setup the TV and said I don't have TV - but every time I switch off and on, it's back. Glitch?

Secondly - does every one else Ambient mode work?

I get this when I try to load my own background ... and I can't seem to reset my own background to default.

Saw a few set up pics here so I'll add mine to the mix...had the stand since 2006 and added 2 monitor risers to lift the TV above the center channel. Everything else is in my sig.

Got another question. Am wanting to use some bias lighting on this set and I presume it uses USB to work. Does power to the USB ports die when you shut the set off or does the bias light strips need a separate controller for power on/off? Not looking for anything fancy just some whited light to offset the utter brilliance of the set in the absolute dark without nerfing the tv in the menu settings. TIA...

I was just coming here to ask the exact same question.

I have some old LED strips that I've been using on an old Sony X850B that don't turn off until about 30 seconds after the TV and then randomly come back on later for various periods of time. I've lived with it for a couple of years, but it's annoying and I want to make sure any new set I buy can handle a simple power on/off of the USB ports to match the TV. I've seen a couple of mentions for older Samsung models that they power the USB ports predictably with the TV power, but I'd like confirmation that the Q70s continue to do that.

I've looked at alternatives as well. Many of them require a separate remote, but the system where I'll be using this I mainly use the remotes of the 2 or 3 media boxes that I've connected to it and a combination of CEC and Alexa control. The media boxes have non-IR remotes so it would be hard to set up a universal remote. There is also Philips Hue which is expensive for an LED strip - I could factor that into my Alexa routines, but it won't help when I turn the system on by using the Home button on Roku or other boxes.

Really I just like the plug and forget option of using a USB LED strip like I already have and just letting them operate automatically from the TV's USB ports.

(My other upgrade option is the X950G, but the Q70R appears to have better gaming features and has reportedly better PQ in dimmer rooms - also I've seen reports that the latest Sonys with Android TV interface are even worse than my old 850B in terms of random USB power while off...)

I got the Luminoodle 6500 White LED strip and it seems to work in either of the 82Q7DR USB ports, so less than .5A current draw I guess. Both turn on/off with the TV power (off after about 30 sec as mentioned by Flar). Have not had an issue with them turning on by themselves so far. I did get the remote for dimming or turning off during the day.

Hi i am looking at picking up a q70r, but i saw the new TCL QLED was released and I was wondering if anyone who is knowledgeable with TV's would have a recommendation for me. I've never owned a high quality TV before, always old cheap ones so I don't know if the extra price tags are worth the experience.

Essentially, is there a noticeable difference in quality between q70r and q60r? or is samsung better quality that it's worth the extra price tag over the new TCL line? I'd be happy to pay more if there is quality in this tv. I'm pretty sure TCL has more backlit areas than this samsung line, but i don' tknow if that will make a difference or not.

also, i generally watch in a pretty dark room, i got good drapes so i don't have to worry about light on the tv if that makes sense.

Q70R is quite A LOT better than Q60R. Q60R is basically a RU8000 with the QLED badge and a nonsense price markup.

See rtings for comparisons.
