2019 Sony X850G (No Price Talk)

These have recently appeared in Costco. Any info yet? Does anyone know if they have VA panels (2018 X830F, 2017 X850E) or if they have IPS panels (2018 X850F)?

They look great in the store, but the poor blacks of IPS panels wouldn’t be visible in such an environment.

The few bare bones reviews on the Costco site are inconclusive at best.

Thanks,

Pip

IPS panels except maybe the 85", new SoC, eARC, new remote AND Dolby Vision. Otherwise fairly similar to the X850F in terms of performance (maybe better Dolby Vision playback with the new SoC than the older Sony models since it supports it natively)

May I ask your source?

I haven't been able to find any concrete info.

Thanks,

Feel free to refer to Sony.com under the Televisions tab. This is most certainly true.

Spoiler!

I did of course. Below I'll copy and paste the specs:

Nothing about VA or IPS panels. Only difference I can find with the 85" is Direct LED instead of Edge LED. Perhaps you have a different Sony.com page, or there is something I'm missing.

Sony rarely to never discusses/confirms VA or IPS panels, usually reviewers determine the panel type. Same thing with the number of zones on their FALD TVs.

This is all I could find on the x850g. It looks like va for the 75 and 85, didn't check the other sizes. They had it on the bb website in Canada but took it down. Looking at the 85 possibly for myself, hope it's a va as stated at this site. It is a 120 panel unlike the x800g which is a 60.

Thanks so much! Finally something that at least appears to be factual. This site lists all the sizes as VA panels.

Does anyone know how reliable this site is? Any suggestions from mithras1 or TheSonyExperience who both stated IPS panels?

This site is completely non-official. Get's it's info from forums, reviews, manuals etc.
There are already reviews for the 55 and 65" and they have IPS panels (including pixel structure closeups).
There is no 85" IPS so that one is almost surely a VA panel like last year ... (75" I'm sure will also turn out to have an IPS panel)

Now magically watch the specs on that site change to IPS in the coming period (edit: I see they are already listing the euro modelnames as having IPS panels. Probably waiting for an Rtings review before the US modelname specs get updated)

Sony lists Netflix Calibrated Mode (mistake?) on their X850g site, but from what I've read, the 950G is the lowest model that has this feature. Also Dolby Atmos is listed as a future firmware update per Costco's website. It's also weird that the box itself doesn't mention Dolby Vision when I saw it in-store, although both Costco and Sony's website list it. Seemingly every other manufacturer that has a TV with DV has the logo on the actual box.

Sony doesn’t show Dolby Vision on A9F box too.

I called Sony and they confirmed that the X850G does support DV but does NOT feature the Netflix Calibrated mode. The CSR said he'd tell IT about the issue on the website not being correct.

Their 'step-up' chart which tells which features are added on the next model-up also doesn't list it until the X950G. No IMAX Enhanced either (when compared to X950G). Probably both reserved for X1 Ultimate (and Extreme?) ...
But Dolby Atmos is listed (it doesn't have eARC and the Acoustic Multi Audio for nothing).

I think the X900F has Netflix Calibrated Mode and IMAX as well.

Anyway, are there any "professional" reviews on the X850G? I am close to pulling the trigger on one but still waiting for more information.

Here is one review but not as in depth as usual. This is more of the 'hands-on' type, seems to have been done at some Sony lineup presentation: https://translate.google.com/transla...%3D1&sandbox=1
And here is the other that I know of: https://translate.google.com/transla...41%2Ftest.html

The Netflix Calibrated Mode is only on models with the Ultimate Processor, so not the X900F. X950G, Z9F, A9F/G, and Z9G only.

New X850G looks like it could be mildly interesting if not IPS. It would mark the return of a 55" native 120Hz 8-series from Sony, the last being the 55" 850D. I think these are Costco exclusives save for the 85, everyone else seems to be getting the X800G.

They have had E and F 55" X850 models everywhere else. The X850F went down to a 43" here in Europe (and in 2019 will be retained as the 43XG83 and 49XG83 models).

I am planning to buy soon (like even today) but can't decide between the following (taxes, etc included):

XBR70X830F is the cheapest and baseline I'll be using for cost.
XBR65X850G for +$280 over the X830F
XBR65X900F for +$460 over the X830F

We just moved into a new house and haven't really watched TV in two months. My last major TV purchase was in 2005 (Sony 42" rear projection LCD) so not up to speed on smart TVs. I know the X900F is well-reviewed. This TV will be in the family room and get a lot of use - after having cable for all of my adult life, we plan to now only use Sling TV, Netflix, Amazon Prime and OTA antenna. I am not sure we'll take full advantage of all the features of X900F but at the same time I don't plan to buy another TV in a few years when something better comes along. It's probably between the X850G and the X900F but without seeing both in "real world" settings, I am not sure if even the smallish price difference is worth it, or if I should just "settle" on the X830F and save almost $500. I'm sure any of the 3 will be better than my 14 year old TV.

Hi guys,

Anyone seen the X850G in 85 inch yet? Really doubting between this one or a 65'' OLED.

So I picked up a 65" from Costco over the weekend to test out, personally my main focus is the performance of the Android TV operating system since I only want a TV with this OS as opposed to anything else (someday everyone else will catch on).

I had seen the concerns over the performance of this OS on the older F generations (especially the 900F) though I have no actual hands on experience of them. I have seen people commenting that the new 950G was MUCH better and closer (if not the same as) the experience you get with a Nvidia Shield TV which is hands down the best streamer and Android TV box out there. Lots of people said that the new 850G TV's should have the same new SoC as the 950G or at least the same level of performance in Android TV but I couldn't find to many concrete details about what SoC the 850G was actually using and worse, I was seeing some conflicting reports.

Now, again, keep in mind I have absolutely no hands on experience with the F generation of TVs however, my ONLY experience of Android TV to date has been two Nvidia Shield TVs which I love so, with that in mind, I cannot compare how the 850G performs in comparison to the F generation of TVs but I CAN say that the Android TV OS on the 850G pretty much performs very closely to my Nvidia Shield TVs and at the very least, even if I have no hard performance data to compare, I can tell you that it performs completely acceptably well!

Now, it's entirely possible that it's the same SoC/same performance as the previous F generation of TVs but in that case, I really don't understand what all the complaints are about having coming from the Shield TV myself.

As for the picture? Meh, it's as you'd expect for an edge lit TV, you're not going to be blown away by it in any stretch of the imagination, does it do the job though? Yes, absolutely and more importantly, with Android TV.

It's never going to be good and my experience on what is 'great' is limited, keep in mind I haven't even messed with the settings much but you can clearly see the backlight a lot while watching the recent Game Of Thrones.
