82Q70R vs. 85X850G

Hi guys,

I’m thinking about one of these two sets and want to know your thoughts. They’re both the same price @ €4599,-. I have only seen them in 55”, where the Q70R was playing demo videos and and while the X850G was showing normal content it has a IPS panel in that size. So both not really representative of what the tv’s can really do. Visited many stores and none carry these sizes. I have no idea how the Sony’s contast is, if they’re similar in their color output or if its brightness is similar to the Q70R. Hopefully somebody has seen these irl and can shed some light on it.

I will use the tv mostly for watching 4K blurays, Netflix and for gaming. I rarely watch cable tv. I sit directly in front of the tv @ 4,30m (14.10 feet)

The way I see it right now:

Pro’s of the 82Q70R:
Great native contrast @ 7250:1
FALD tv (boosts contrast to 8056:1)
Gaming features
Its smart platform

Pro’s of the 85X850G
Dolby Vision
3 inches bigger
How Sony usually handles motion and color (so not necessarily a pro of the 85X850G)

Cons of the Q70R:
No Dolby Vision

Cons of the X850G:
No FALD (it’s a Direct LED)
Higher input lag (I assume this)

Thanks!

I am in the same boat as you, I am about 15 foot back, but I am looking at the sony 900F or 950G vs the Q90 from samsung.

Interested to hear other peoples opinions as well.

I would go q70r hands down. I’m shopping the 82q70r vs the 85x900f and I can’t make up my mind. I sit 16 feet from my TV so I get that every inch counts, but the q70r just has too many pros. The most important is way better native contrast, plus FALD. Then it gets a faster more intuitive UI, AirPlay 2, FreeSync VRR, plus more native resolutions that don’t need to be forced.

Q70R will be highly superior to X850G, especially for HDR. I have the TV and the black levels and contrast are awesome. Yeah, it could have been a bit more brighter, but to an average viewer, the picture will look outstanding.

Oh and also, the 82Q70R is still at 3499 for Samsung EPP program.

From Samsung product, Q90R seems to be impressing most the most. Some even preferring it more than the 8K Q900R.

Q70R is a huge drop-off from Q90R, not in the same ballpark. To answer the OP, I wouldn't consider Q70R or X850G. 2018s Q7FN or X900F would be better considerations.

I just bought the 75 inch Q70 yesterday. Amazing set. I say go for it. It has stellar reviews on this site and rtings.com

I owned the 85” 900F and now the 82” Q90R. The Q90R is definitely a much better set. Are you in a bright or dark room?

Thanks for your reply. I really dislike edge lit tv's and the X900F is not available in 85'' in my country, so these two aren't options.

Thanks for your reply. Have you find any downsides yet?

Bright during the day (windows to the left) and then dark at night.

The 900F is not too bad for daytime viewing, certainly better than the 950G will be with x-wide angle layer. That being said, the Q90R’s anti-reflection filter is a thing of beauty. I can watch dark content during the day in my very bright room with great results.

The Q70R is superior for HDR because it has FALD. Without local dimming, LCDs like the 850G cannot produce the deep blacks and bright peak highlights required for HDR movies.

No problem with mine at all...but its been two days. I'm having it calibrated in two weeks. But I love it. I also looked at the 82 inch but It was frankly too big for my space.

If you are sensitive to flicker Samsung is not an option. Sony is much better in that regard.

Yeah, that's true.

Why do you feel the flicker is bad on the Samsung? Rtings gives the Q70R a 9.9 out of 10 on its flicker as it's flickers at 960hz.

I did the same mistake when I bought Q9FN. 960Hz is in Movie mode only. 120Hz in other modes including Game mode. But the most annoying that when you turn Auto Motion Plus on PWM freaquency is 120Hz in ANY mode.
