That's a shame, I really hate sub-pixel dimming. Do you have any photos, or know if anyone else does?

I kind of disagree with this YouTuber. I have been switching back and forth between Action Smoothing/Natural Cinema, and I prefer to keep NC on and AS off for most content. He prefers to keep AS on Medium and NC off. But since you have to turn off AS to enable NC, it really is an A/B choice that is easily tested. Try them both and see which one you prefer.
Kind of wish both could be on at the same time.

My 2015 Vizio could do anti-judder and motion smoothing at the same time. I mostly hate the SOE, but sometimes, for some content, the setting helps on its lowest level.

Pre J1008 firmware the H9F had lousy gradients. I notice skin issues and foreheads were splotchy. With J1008 they really improved gradients and foreheads look great to me now.

They can't be on at the same time, motion smoothing interpolates the in between frames, there is no room or need left for de judder

Said that way...makes total sense. Kinda now makes me scratch my head what the heck was going on with the Vizio then lol

The 625 really crushes blacks to oblivion if you set local contrast to high. If you try to watch the king on Netflix half the thing looks pure black

I just got mine but I think I will return and keep my m558 instead.the 625 is sharper as it doesn't do panel wide subpixel dimming. I swear I saw it cross hatch in hdr light grey but I can not reproduce it at the moment.

There is quite a bit of banding if you pull up a linearization test but I didn't see it stand out during normal watching.

It obviously can get much brighter than the Vizio, while the Vizio maintains visibly better black levels without crushing detail. I don't like Roku that much but Smartcast is the worst. You win some, you lose some.

Oh and I pulled up a 4k resolution chart and it showed aliasing at 20 sharpening and none at 0. A 2 px square test also shows shifting at any value above 0. Im not certain that 20 is no sharpening.

Dse is not the worst but edges are noticeably yellower and darker for me (my partner pointed it out as well) and there is a narrower band at the top and bottom.

*edit. Built in Amazon prime app with Dolby Vision has image processing on that you cannot turn off, it's pretty aggressive sharpening / contrast enhancement. It's a bit strange, I wonder if it's upscaling from 1080p instead of streaming 4k

9.1.2 6463-88 55r625 Default parameters apart from 0 sharpening, Dolby dark, natural cinema, local contrast medium, brightness normal.

The built in roku apps of Netflix and Amazon Prime (only tested with Dolby Vision shows) apply image processing that makes the image appear sharper / more detailed. It looks like selective edge enhancement and it cannot be turned off. Tested at the max bit rate, double checked with the debug overlay.

Furthermore, testing with a 4k resolution chart for aliasing, sharpening seems to be applied at 20 unlike their claim that 20 is the zero point *edit, I changed something else and now 20 seems to be a 0, I really hope TCL can step in and explain what happens between 0 and 20. Also, If you pull the test patterns show in Netflix and use their regular chart, it shows some sort of artifact where the middle 1px bar is drawn through the center photograph. I don't know if that is a gamma or chrome sharpening diagnostic, but it is not visible on the Vizio. The bar also has a color cast on the r625. Unlike above enhancement, this is with the built in app and the fire stick 4k both, tested to be streaming at the max nitrate.

I have none of this. You probably have a bad panel. I have no banding either. Also the Vizio is horrible upscaling and it doesn't get bright the M558. Send it back for another panel. Do you like the upscaling on the Vizio? Star Wars looks beautiful in 4k Dolby Atmos. No black crush at all. I can see all the stars in the sky that is properly displayed. Now we just need the discs.

Also do you have the 55'" or the 65"? I here the 65" may have these problems. I have the 55" and I was looking to upgrade to the 65". I don't know yet.

Exactly why I won't get the H9F. The TCL R617 had this and that's why the R625 is better.

You can't go by just 1 source or 1 video The king on Netflix. Try Star Wars on Disney +. If you have it.

For Dolby Vision

Tv Brightness- Brighter
Picture Mode- DV Dark
Picture Size-Auto

Local Contrast- High
blacklight-100
brightness-50
Contrast-100
Sharpness- (TCL said 20 is there 0 but I still kinda not buy it. So I go back and forth from 0-20 and in-between.)
Tint-0
Color Temp- Warm or Normal. Sometimes I think the Warm setting feels like Warm #2 on the Samsung and other TV's. Sometimes it's to warm, so I go with normal.
Natural Cinema- On
Everything else off.
Gamma- 2.0 not 2.2 for Dolby Vision.

Oh I am using the Apple 4k TV not the Roku internal apps. I might get the test and check it out.

It's weird though I have never gotten a bad panel from TCL. I guess I have been lucky. I am sure there are bad panels out there and I don't dismiss what people are saying. Not at all. There are bad panels with every tv. But I will say I never got a bad panel with them. Sometimes though the handshake of my old Pioneer Elite which was top of the line back in 2010 gives mean some auto sync problems and I have to go into the CEC and unsync then sync again to get it back the syncing problems. It happened a few times. However that's about it. I am reluctant to go a step up to the 65" cause I hear the 65" is having alot of these problems that people are discussing..

Try doing a hard reset of just the picture and audio on the tv. That may fix your problem.

Setting to brightest and Gamma 2.0 would lift the black out so that they are not fully crushed, at 2.2 and normal brightness it is too dark in darker scenes. High local contrast also creates a vignetting effect with letterboxed movies that you can see by switching between high and off.

Though mine remains too agressive at local contrast high even with 2.0, with fire stick anyhow, I don't have an apple tv to test with.

I think the motion issue that people are complaining about is some sort of image/noise processing(even with it off from expert settings). If you pull the dark crystal in dolby vision and watch 6:00 to 7:00 in the first episode up close to the tv, you can see that it has this strange posterization effect in between frames, especially around where the spider is escaping. This is not part of the show as I tested on a couple more displays. It remains on with natural cinema on or off.

The other issue, which might be related, can be seen below in the netflix 'test patterns' show where the 1px patterns are carried through the middle, which points to some sort of processing (link) You might have to look at it at 100%

I used CNET settings and they work great for me. For SDR. I set contrast to 90 not 100.

I see what they did, dropped gmama and contrast both to fit the eotf curve. It specifies this for SDR though, doesn't give hdr settings. I'll put a colorimeter on it today and see what is up. There is also no reason why the 65r625 settings should apply since it's a different panel.

FYI if you activate this TV between 10/28/19 - 02/15/20 you can get 3 free months of ad free Hulu and Pandora. (usually 1 month)

Just make sure to cancel just before your free time is up.

Wasn't able to find it so I figured that I would ask. Can this tv passthrough Atmos from the Apple TV app, vudu, netflix through ARC to either a receiver or sound bar?

Here is the problem with using other peoples setting.... Everyones eyes are different and thus sees colors and sharpness differently.

I've tried the C/Net setting and those listed here and did not like any of them.

Let your own eyes set the TV up, not what looks good to someone else.

My buddy paid $300 for a pro calibration and he hated the look. Two days later he set it back to his liking.

Can somebody else try the test patterns show on Netflix, first episode? Let it load to full bandwidth and 4k(it says in the top right) and see you have the two bars go through the middle picture in a pattern like I posted above?

I just bought the 625, being delivered in a few hours.
One question, it looks like this TV does not have bluetooth. What would you recommend to connect to a bluetooth soundbar ?
Right now I’m using an amazon fire tv , its bluetooth is excellent with no lag, but I would like to just use the tv roku smart capabilities.
Thanks in advance for any suggestion/experience.

Yes you are correct. It's just a starting point. The only thing CNET changed from factory defaults is the Contrast that's it.

So my first question is if anyone has the 65" variant how is the 65" any problems? I have the 55" and I have 10 days to think about upgrading to the 65". I heard the 65" has more probems. I really haven't had any problems on my 55". I just want a bigger TV.

Also when I select auto detect in the audio menu it screws up the syncing of voices from time to time. Now I have a 5.1 setup. My receiver does Dolby Digital Plus and True HD but the receiver does not do Atmos.

Should I select Audio Passthrough? Is that only for Atmos receivers or soundbars or should I select the option DD+ plus DTS? Thanks.

It looks like Costco is going to be the goto place to buy these once Black Friday rolls around. Here's images from their Black Friday and December coupon books showing the 55R625 for $399 and the 65R625 for $599 "limit 3 per customer"
