Love my Z9G...my wife would like for it to have a thin vessel and be more eye pleasing, but what can you do.
I more than makes up with the stunning picture.

Question for the AVS Forum moderators:
Does anyone know if the New Z8H backlit remote control is compatible with the Z9G?
I would love to purchase one - when available - just to take advantage of its backlit feature.

Thank you in advance for any information.

I’m glad to hear you are loving your set, mine will be here here in the next few days and I can’t wait! I’m coming from a 940D and am sure hoping the Z9G is worth the money.
I personally don’t mind the styling given the fact they incorporated a pretty good sound system in it, I am going to try it before I buy a sound bar. The thickness doesn’t bother me much either as I never go look at the side of the tv.

I am seeing a couple retailers dropping the price of the 85" Z9G by another $2K from the most recent sales price. Wonder if this is a limited time promotion or the new market price for the Z9G?

I'm not sure moderators would have info like that
But having in mind that remotes are the same (except backlight) I do not see why it shouldn't work
I have 15 year old Sony TV remote and it works with Z9G although some buttons are not there so functionality is reduced
But as Z8H has the same buttons I see no issue there
I must admit I was thinking on buying this also - but after a while I got so used to this remote I can use it without looking

Sony appears to have dropped the MSRP.

Sony has updated the price on their web site for the 85 inch one. The 98 is still $60k

I do not have any means of watching 8K material now
But if you talking only about upscaleing I can't see any difference visavi resolution (between 65"ZD9 and 85"ZG9) - that is maybe because of difference of 20" from those two
I remeber reading one comparison and looking into zoomed part of the picture 4kon4k and 4kon8k. And there actually was a difference on that "pixel" level - but when looked on normal level I couldn't tell any difference (but I was looking over monitor not in person - so it's probably not relevant)
I wasn't ever hoping this will be of any real benefit - maybe in some theoretical situations - but in normal viewing from a normal distance - no...

But than again, I'm watching 85" from the same distance as I did 65" and it seems to me like the sharpness/resolution is the same despite 20" increase in size - so that is a plus in my book for 8K upscaleing

Didn't see it, I did analyse all the info I could find about it before buying Z9G though and figured out that Z8H is more like Z9F and Z9G is more like Z9D - so Z8H is one step below Z9G in my opinion (although it is newer model and has backlighted remote)

I bet if you wanted a 98" you probably could not find one "truly" in stock.

I just got mine yesterday coming from a 940D and am very happy so far. What sound setting are you guys using? I don’t have a sound bar and may never get one as the speakers are decent. Also I noticed there is a weird light spot in the top left corner, is this considered normal?

From what information I could find on the Z8H, it will have half the peak brightness of the Z9G (2000 vs 4000 nits) and less local dimming zones. Both will use the same X1 Ultimate chip. Pricewise the Z9G now lists at $8K. The price of the Z8H has not been announced, but the price of the 85" 950H model that sits right below it lists for $5K. So the Z8H should fall somewhere in between.

Yep, I had the same thoughts but I was hoping someone here was at CES2020 who saw both that might give us some insights. Thanks for all your postings and pictures.

I googled and read a lot of stuff on both (and got a headache :rolleyes). You summarized it very nicely. I saw VE list the Z8H at $10k, but given our current situation and the Z9G price dropped, highly doubt that price will stick for the Z8H.

Here are a few more pics. It’s a vertical streak or something and it doesn’t seem right. I’ve owned many TVs and have not seen anything like this.

Hello mxsledder,

Thank you for the additional pics.

It is quite unfortunate that you are having to deal with this vertical scratch nonsense with your new TV. I can tell you for sure that's not a SONY Z9G feature. It did not come with mine.

Did you get white glove delivery of this TV? Did you take any pictures or video after they installed it? If so, you should be able to open a claim against it and have it replaced ASAP.
I would suggest calling customer care and opening a claim ASAP just to avoid any BS from the store.

Good luck to you.

Thanks for the input! I bought the TV from Cleveland Plasma and had them deliver it. Unfortunately so far they are trying to tell me the tv is ok and it’s not a big deal since it’s the worst when the tv is off, so far I’m not super happy purchasing the TV here. I’m going to do a bit more work and see if I can’t get it swapped out.

I have bought a few big items from Chris before without any issues and he assured me if there was, it would be promptly taken care of. Again, I never had a problem. I'm curious how or if he would take care of something like this since it's not a big or obvious issue like a cracked screen, or it doesn't work, etc... Still, it is a problem and would bug the hell out of me considering it's a high end unit and its cost.

Do you see it while watching (TV, movies, etc.) under normal circumstances?? (I know I know, now that you see or aware of it, it's like a big elephant). I hope (and expect) he would take care of it for you. Good luck and please keep us posted.

I am hopeful the retailer helps get it resolved as they do have a good reputation. After looking at it more it doesn’t seem like scratches it’s almost more of a defect in the screen coating.
I have noticed it a bit during dark scenes but it’s most noticeable when the tv is off. I’ve owned many TVs and have not had to return one yet so this is new to me. It’s just unfortunate my biggest tv purchase to date is the only one that’s been flawed.
On the bright side though this is a very nice set and my wife and I are loving the picture quality. I have no desire to calibrate the set as it’s really close right out of the box.

You are a better person than I could ever be.
I would not be able to watch anything on that new TV after knowing what's there. My eyes would just gravitate towards the affected portion of the screen preventing me from enjoying the beautiful picture.

I am also hopeful your continuous interaction with the retailer helps get it resolved to your satisfaction.

Regards,
Ed

maybe this will sound stupid, please don't get affended - are you sure it's a scratch?
I suppose you only see it when sun light is just right?
Guess you would see it earlier if light is not an variable in this equation (i.e. when unpacking)
I had something on mine, but it wasn't like this - I saw it immediatelly after I install it on the wall - but it was just body greece - so it went down while cleaning
after that there was one time I got scared seeing something - but it turned to be just an reflection (this TV do get some pretty strange reflections)
Guess I would try to clean and clean that part and hope it would go away
But if it's really scratch I guess the only question is: "Are you still enjoying your TV fully?"
If not than I would try to return it - but I know what my dealer whould say to me: "your duty is to check the panel while unboxing and sign it off, so if you see this now you obiously scratch it yourself, "
I hope in USA customers have some more rights

The latest price reduction on the 85" Z9G is to move some inventory while making room for the new model (according to my Sony Rep). I was able to do better than retail because of one of my companies. I had one already, but added this at half the cost of the first display, and may add another before they are sold out.

After looking at it more I do not believe it’s a scratch it looks more like a defect in the screen coating finish. I tried cleaning it with no luck at all. I noticed it very quickly and let Chris know immediately so I should be ok there. It is mostly noticeable with the tv off but have seen it a few times with it on just having a hard time getting a picture that does it justice.
It is keeping me from enjoying the set knowing how much I paid for it and of all my TVs I’ve had this is the only real flaw I’ve ever encountered. We will see how this all goes down but if they don’t replace it I will never buy again from an online retailer as if I would have bought from Best Buy I’d already have a new set delivered.

So the Z8H should fall somewhere in between.
I just checked the Best Buy website and the 85" Z9G is now $8,000 (wow)!

Hmmmm, wish I could compare the 85" Z9G to the Z8H to assess the Z8H's pic without BMD (& probably fewer zones than the Z9G). Heck, I wish I could even see a Z9G somewhere...I would've bought it at launch at $13k if any store had one to check out.

Now that the Z9G is $8k, I'm tempted. I got a 75" Z9F when it's price dropped in December after comparing it for an hour to the competition. Anyone have a Z9F and a Z9G to help me decide on the Z9G???
