It may be crazy but its standard, boilerplate language.
I've asked about it in these forums maybe 1-2 years ago...its the price of getting something (or the chance of getting something) for free.

Frankly, I would advise EVERYONE to avoid this survey/contest...I will gladly spare you all the burden of the media attention when I win.

Blanket permission to use all of your personal information including information collected from other sources plus the intellectual property inherent in your likeness and voice in perpetuity for any reason is simply not standard anywhere and whoever told you it is was either lying or has no idea what they're talking about. It goes WAY beyond standard sweepstakes privacy policy terms and no one should agree to it.

Cheese and rice people, we do not want your personal response information. If you win we need to contact you. Welcome to the world of boilerplate privacy/compliance/protection.
This research is useful only in its aggregated form as a broad cross section of AVSForum members and guests; a very influential and knowledgeable AV community. Individual responses/data are not meaningful, we're looking for the aggregate.
Rest assured we do not want your personal details, only your participation. Which will be anonymized.

Make sense?

We've done 4-8 giveaways a year for the last 5+ years. R&Rs have not changed much in that time.
There is always a research component, sometimes a few questions, sometimes many questions, sometimes just an email opt-in.

We've given away TVs, sub-woofers, Visa gift cards, Amazon gift cards, DVDs, AVRs, surround systems, soundbars and projectors.
It's fun! And meant to be a Thank You to the community.

Smart TVs and streaming are now the norm and the result is a shift away from the tradition “channel flipping” that used to define TV watching. In this study, we’re looking for insights into how you use your TV. Questions in the study range from what apps you stream with to what device(s) you use to stream. It also covers whether IoT is part of your TV experience and how voice commands are used when it comes to controlling a Smart TV.

Completing the survey enters you in a giveaway, with a chance to win one of three $500 Amazon gift cards. ]To take the survey and enter the giveaway, ...

[I]To find out more about the rules and regulations governing this giveaway,

Right off the bat ... what brand of TV do you own allows only one answer. BS flag up immediately!
What I want from a TV is to be a monitor, not smart, not with speakers, just display what my smart rcvr sent you ... who’s source is a smart disc player or smart streamer ... and who’s output is the TV and 7.1.4 spkrs.

I bet you did not read all the EULAs associated with the all the software required to make it possible for you to post that (and if you did, wow!). And I bet "nobody should agree" to those terms, either. Or at least that's what I learned by watching South Park.

The language is indeed there to account for copyright law and wording like that has indeed become standard in various boilerplate releases used by media organizations. Of course people continue to have the CHOICE to not participate.

Well, I hope it helps even though it's not a drill-down specific example. I gather you plan to skip the survey, based on your posts, so that about covers it.

mart541... you point does stand. Its sad to see how the moderators seem to want these fair questions on use of information to be unimportant. The responses have some truth to them but seem to be just to downplay the validity of the concern. "everybody saw your question, lets continue now"... "let me answer this once so no one continues to ask"... "looks like you're not participating in this poll, lets move on"...

This is concerning..........and I know... "I have spoken on the issue and let us all move on."

Doesn't feel right.

So much for this thread evolving into an expanded discussion about "How Do You Use Your TV? Apps, IoT, Voice?"

Personally I'd rather have a "perfect" streaming box so my TV wouldn't need to be so "smart" in the first place...that way I could route all audio through the AVR first and wouldn't have to rely on the lossy audio versions over ARC or Optical from the TV.

Good Point! Most tvs dont equip good enough hardware to make the smart part of it enjoyable anyway.
Also I would like to add that it would be great if we didnt have to have 3 different streaming boxes just to be able to receive all the necessary apps. Sure I could sideload vudu/fandangonow etc. to the firestick 4k but it's just a hassle, expanding on your comment about "no perfect streaming box"

We are not collecting contact information, only the anonymous aggregated data is used for the research results.

Contact information is required to get hold of the 3 lucky winners. Otherwise, contact info is scrubbed.

6. What devices are connected to your TV?
Select all that apply.

I am running my 4k bluray player, nvidia shield tv, and well everything else through my AV Receiver which then my AVR is hooked to my projector (TV) so technically the only thing I can click is my AVR lol... or should I go ahead and select the items.

Why are people complaining? If it doesn't apply to you... move along. I know I would.

Simple enough.

I don't understand the need to waste time commenting on something that doesn't apply to you.

Some people have too much time on their hands I guess.

...in an attempt to try to get this conversation back on track...

Thanks for the opportunity! I already have some great ideas on what I'll spend that five hundo on.

Regarding whining about country of participation, I note that almost all "giveaway" surveys are intended to gain knowledge about a particular regional market, usually the one the survey maker sells to. Opinions (which many times are regional) from other regions are often just not useful. It's like why surveys about who people will vote for in the US election, are usually limited to people who live in the USA & are old enough to vote.
Same here...I select LG for my TV and it wanted to know, additionally, what model Samsung I had. I just entered OTHER and stated I don't own a Samsung.

That does bring up a question....I did not log in, I just came to the site from the email announcing the contest. I entered the contest, and completed it, with no problems.

Then I logged in. I went back to retake the survey but I was told I had already taken it, so, I (or my IP address) was recognized.

Does my entry count?
