Thumbs up 2020 Sony XBR-X950H owners thread (No Price Talk)

I preordered a 49" X950H on Amazon yesterday, so as an actual "owner" I would like to kick off this new thread. I currently have a well calibrated X900F, and am upgrading to the X950H for additional picture modes, such as Dolby Vison bright and dark, additional Calman profiles, eARC, 4 HDMI 2.0 ports, and the 50%. brighter HDR luminance on the 950 series. I pulled the trigger on the X950H 49" after it dropped in price 15% on Amazon (dropped hundreds of dollars for a few hours, now back to MSRP), and as of today, it shows as shipping my preorder on Feb 17, 2020.

I should have my X950H on Wed the 19th according to Amazon...crossing fingers. I have a i1 Display Pro meter, HCFR, and Calman Home for Sony 2019 R3 with Autocal ready and waiting for the new set to arrive. Running it through the meter will obviously be the first priority, and I will post a small review with calibration results and quirks and features discovered. If you have any specific questions about the new TV, ask away, and we will see what we can do to help answer them.

Looking forward to your evaluation. After this years CES, there were a lot of new sets that piqued my interest. I want to stay close to a 50" set, so the 48" Sony Oled and this LCD fits the bill.

Do you know the difference between th X950H and the XH95? These nomenclatures can be confusing. I'm wondering if the XH95 is for the UK.

Correct, the naming scheme for the US and Japan is different than for Europe. The USA 60Hz A9G Master Series OLED is probably the 50Hz AG9 across the pond.

Speaking of Master Series, I almost waited for the new 48" A9S 48" OLED, but was anticipating $2000+ pricetag (preordered my X950H for half that), and my TV is hooked up to a Windows PC full time and the fear of walking away for 10 minutes with a Windows folder open (white box with test on a black background), or pausing Netflix for 10 minutes, just scares the hell out of me with OLED.

Thanks for your reply. Didn't realize that the new Sony LED model was available. Will wait for your analysis.

The A9S wasn't on display at CES,so hopefully it will hit the showroom soon. Hoping that the X950H will be too.

I had the 55"A9G briefly late last year and it had a couple of issues,so I returned it while I could to Best Buy. Great picture, but trying to get a good picture was painstaking. The menu system is somewhat of a pain. Getting to the settings was lengthy and you could.t just exit, you had to back step out. I don't suspect the new line will be any different.

The 50Hz models can accept 60Hz as well...I think it is more to do with the included tuners, the US TV's don't have DVB-T.

Me too ,

Still showing the same price as when it was first announced , ship date still the 24th ( next week ) .

Me __ undecided , I need to see what Samsung is offering .

I too must stay around the 50" size , I would like to go bigger , but stand and environment disagree !!

Now to but you guys to work , or who ever reads this and cares to reply !!

What is this Calman , thing and how much does it cost ?

I`m not as young as I seem , and still believe ALL tv`s should come ready to view.

Right now I have a Sony XBR2 ( old ) and never needed any major adjustments .

Also have a 2013 Samsung F8K and the main board failed and after it was replaced , the picture was and is perfect , had a bad main board to start with.

So that is it

Take care ,

Calaman is software along with equipment used to "calibrate" a tv's color performance. It's quite detailed, more so than calibrators had 20 years ago.

Here's a link to one of many youtube videos that show what goes into a calibration.

I have Calman Home for Sony 2019 ($149USD) with AutoCal. When my TV arrives this Wednesday, I will throw a quick 2.2 power gamma and BT.1886 AutoCal at it, while I wait for the screen to break in a week or so and do a more in depth calibration. I will post the AutoCal settings in a week when I get the TV, so at least you can have some "better than stock" settings to use.

Amazon keeps fluctuating between $1198 MSRP for the 49" and $998...it keeps going up and down randomly...I got one at $999 on the 14th.

At one time back in the early 90's, I took the ISF training because there wasn't anyone doing calibrations in this area. This was when Joe Kane was the main man. I ended up using a Philips PM5639 analyzer and companion test pattern generator. Really expensive and it could only do color temp. What you have is so much more sophisticated. I had my Pioneer Elite Kuro calibrated several years back with a calibrator who used Calman and it was interesting to see it done.
Like I said previously, looking forward to your assessment of the set's abilities.

Hi LNEWoLF ,

Thanks for the link , I actually saw that before I posted , I guess I was kind`a hoping it was a built in thing that magically corrected any muck ups while being built !! LOL

I found about a little about the new Samsung 49" QLED - 8 Series last night , below is a link to Samsung`s website to find out more.

https://www.samsung.com/us/televisio...qn49q80tafxza/

Curious , BH Photo is stating 100 less than Amazon , I imagine that will change by the release date , some time in April .

2 very nice 49" to choose from , now curious about Vizio`s offering .

Right now , is very minute , I might go with the Samsung , but that will change a lot !!

Take care ,

Maybe adding those would have pushed the pricing a bit higher than they wanted? Maybe they will have those options on the A9S and wanted to ensure more buyers caughed up double the price for those features?

First review of the X950H is out:

Looks like blooming has improved over the X950G (3:20), however the # of dimming zones doesn't seem to have changed much.

When you get around to making adjustments via the menu, take some shots head on, not from the side. This set doesn't have the wide angle capability of the 55" and above models.

Speaking of menu. I had the A9G briefly last year and I found getting in and out of user menu very frustrating. It would tale multiple steps to get the picture settings and then having to back out the same number of steps. Every set I've ever owned allowed for a quick, one step exit. Curious to know if this set has a quick exit.

I just got an alert from Amazon saying my new delivery date, first was Feb 19th then Feb 26, is now MARCH 27TH (maybe they can do it by then, but no promisses)!

I am seeing the seller is Beach Camera, one of those grey market bait and switch New York camera stores.
