Red face Firewire alternitive

Hello all.
I have an older JVC gr-d23ek video Cam.
Loads of mini video tapes I would like to put on my laptop to edit.
Problem: Laptop does not have Firewire input.
I notice on the Video Cam, besides the firewire output there is a s-video output.
could this be used to transfer the mini dvd tapes do you think?
If so, what would be the best way. My Laptop has USB and HDMI ports.
Many thanks in anticipation.

Your can TRY an inexpensive Firewire to USB Adapter...which may or may NOT work:
https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_n...+usb+converter

Or if you have a ExpressCard Slot on your Laptop:
https://www.amazon.com/ExpressCard-1.../dp/B003N3J354

And if that doesn't work, TRY a HUB with both Firewire and USB Ports...suggest you do your own research to see which ones work:

What kind of laptop is it? Does it have a thunder bolt port? If so, thunderbolt is backwards compatible with FireWire and all you need is an adapter.

Those FireWire to USB adapters do not work at all. Completely different interface and those have been known to even damage equipment due to the voltage differences.

There is no such Firewire to USB adapter without a chip, The ones you see on ebay and amazon are fake and they damaged so many devices over the course of the last decade or so, Check the customers complaints.
Look for any Pinnacle capture device that has both the firewire and USB ports, Models like 500-USB, 510-USB, 700-USB, 710-USB. The smallest device USB powered is the 500-USB.
A driver is needed for newer operating systems, You can just install a trial-ware pinnacle software without having to use it and you get the driver for free.

With such devices you can transfer DV and HDV to your computer unaltered and you can control your camcorder from the capture application, The best known one for DV is WinDV, There few others that can do both DV and HDV.
