I have a Mytek Brooklyn+ DAC that has a built in phono stage. I thought it was ok, good enough but recently it started making some low level popping noises only when used as a phono pre. I installed a Cambridge CP-1 between my Pro-Ject carbon debut and the Mytek and changed the aux input from phono to line level in, problem solved and it sounds much better.

Replaced my desktop Bluesound Powernode 2 with something a little more powerful that has the analog inputs NOT shared with the TOSLink optical one. Dual sub outs, Dirac Live, alternate screen display can show VU meters, even gives the temp on each channel amp! The ESS Sabre 9028 DAC is incredibly detailed and "liquid", profoundly more so than the Powernode 2's Burr-Brown. As well it should at 3x the cost.

DAC upgrade time... waited long enough for price incentives

This thing sounds really good, even in comparrison to the dac2dsdse it replaced... just in a different class.

Recorded Robbie Robertson's self titled album to a used Maxell chrome tape that I recently picked up for $3.00 using the dbx facility on the Yamaha KX800 deck. Album is pristine and cassette recording sounds exactly like the album with no hiss or attenuated highs.

Today, I alphabetized my meager 100+ album collection and cleaned the heads on my Denon cassette deck. I'm not really much into cassettes but I have no idea when it was cleaned last...probably 10 years or more. I also demagnetized it as well using an old demagnetizing cassette gizmo but I have no idea how well those things perform.

Regards,

John

I have been having a really bad dry spell lately. It seems all the Goodwill stores are now cherry-picking all the best items to sell on their website and on eBay now so there doesn't seem to be many good deals on used music anymore. I am now 0 for 24 visits to the 8 local Goodwill stores. Three full runs and nothing. It's a good thing yard sales and flea market season is almost upon us.

I did stop by a local Family Dollar store today for milk after dropping the 15 year old off at his baseball practice. There on the shelf behind the checkout was a box of miscellaneous CD's all marked $5. I flipped through them and picked up a new copy of Styx "Paradise Theater." I always loved this album but never found it for sale until today so I guess today wasn't a total bust after all.

Regards,

John

I finally took the time to finish the work on my Kenwood Table. I had taken it apart to add some mass to it and also did the underside of the table also,I used Ductseal which is a type and putty that we use on my job. I had an old Shure M75ed Type2 that I had bought a Jico SAS Stylus for so that was a good match for this table. It sounds very good, probably better than it should! I have it in place of my Technics at the moment just to get some use out of it,I think the next step will be to rewire the tonearm with some cardas wire,a straight run from Headshell to Plugs. For now though it has a really good sound. I have to add a shelf so I can just have both tables setup and use either without moving tables around.

Pity you are not finding good pickings any more. Do you have any "Buy The Pound" stores in your area? I have acquaintances in the US who have very good luck in those places. Our equivalent in Canada is Goodwill Impact, which I visited today. Have to admit, I'm not coming out of there with the quantities I once did, but there are still some bargains to be had. I picked up a total of 26 CDs today for a total cost of $34, all in very good condition and including some titles I'd never expect to find in a thrift store.

Nope, wish I had either store as an option but I don't. My normal music run, when I have a day to do it, includes 9 Goodwill stores, 2 pawn shops, 1 Salvation Army, 1 Disabled American Veterans store and until recently the only used record shop in town which has now closed up. Goodwill was the best source but from what I am told most decent items other than furniture and clothing are now being listed on Goodwill's website for sale now or their eBay store. I used to make this run weekly but now I do it about once per month since pickings have been so bad.

The last few titles I got were purchased new from Amazon.com or at a Family Dollar store. I love to dig for new/used music. Maybe it will get better now that yard sale season is upon us soon.

Regards,

John

Well, I hope you soon have some better luck. With any luck, it'll pass. I know your experience is not being repeated in some areas, because I keep seeing the quite substantial hauls that people are finding. You can see examples of what people are finding on the "Feeding The Beast Within" thread on that other forum I showed you.

I've been casting my line in some different directions lately, because there are some recordings I wanted that are generally very expensive and difficult to track down. Sally Oldfield and Transatlantic are a couple examples. I found several Transatlantic CDs in a local store and traded them for some duplicates and bought pretty well the entire Sally Oldfield discography from Amazon affiliates (used) very cheap. I was hit quite badly for shipping, but it was worth it.

Since you live in the US, you might find shipping to be pleasantly cheap from Amazon.com. I bought a couple CDs for a friend of mine and had them shipped to him. In one case, the shipping was free and the other cost about $4, in spite of the fact that the CD came from the UK. If you use the Amazon international sites, shipping cost starts to climb, but so do the benefits of a strong currency.

We are probably reaching the end of the period where CDs are practically worthless. Prices certainly are starting to climb, much as they did with vinyl. IMO (and experience), people don't find the same satisfaction with digital files as they do with physical media.

I sold my Esoteric SA-50 DAC/SACD Player, Wyred4Sound STP-SE preamp, miniDSP DDRC-22D Dirac Live processor and Krell KAV-250a/3 amp (still for sale) and I have a Lyngdorf TDAI-3400 on it's way. I'm looking forward to the simplicity and hopefully not losing anything in the sound quality department.

Try your local Library... most have rather huge music collections that can be checked out, ripped, and returned for basically nothing.
I wouldn't look for vinyl from discounters, everything's been picked over.

Resurrected my Denon 2910 which I bought around 2005 as my first high quality DVD player (upscaled 480p to 720p/1080i before true HD was available) so mostly used it for for that until I jumped into BluRay.

CD tray broke years ago so had it repaired and am now listening to my CDs again with it in my music system vs streaming as it is a very capable CD/SACD player in its own right.

Sounds great.

It has been at least a decade since I used CDs as the actual source rather than ripped versions via my computer.

My Oracle Delphi Mk I turntable, that I bought new in 1982 or something was exhibiting some bad wow and flutter. I replaced the belt, put some bearing oil down the shaft, which made it better, but didn't really fix it.
The smartphone RPM app consistently measures the RPM at 32.4, and wow at around 0.4%. I couldn't find anything to adjust the speed, even though the manual says it can be done with an adjustment screw at the right rear of the motor.

I expect the motor is weakening and needs to be replaced. The upgrade to the current Mk VI motor is $1800, and you have to send the base in to the factory so they can machine it to fit the new motor.

That is more expensive than a brand new Rega Planar 3. I called Definitive Audio in Seattle to see if they had one in Gloss Black. They have one in their warehouse, so they are going to put my name on it and have it ready for pickup at the store tomorrow.

I'm buying it locally because there aren't many high end audio stores left around here, so you need to support the ones that are left.

Added an Outlaw BTR-200 Bluetooth receiver to my 2.0 setup and an aluratec Bluetooth 5 rec/transmitter to an AVR/3.1 system.
Both run aptX and work great.

Thumbs up

A few additions for my new Luxman PD-171 A TT. Purchased a Clearaudio Quadro Weight Clamp. Keeps records flatter. And to clean my cart the DS-Audio ST-50 Stylus Cleaner. It's a gel that you dip your cart in. The Gel is reusable just gently wash under warm water and air dry for 30 minutes.

I picked up my Rega Planar 3 today. I had it working after about a half hour of getting it home.
It doesn't have a grounding wire, but it works with my Bellari VP530 Tube Phono Preamp. That phono preamp had an intractable hum with my old turntable.

I'm looking forward to going through my vinyl collection, which I am in the process of cataloging. There are a lot of gems in there that I've forgotten.
