AXPONA 2016 Coverage on AVS Forum

It's time for North America's largest springtime audio expo, AXPONA (Audio Expo North America). With over 110 rooms and 377 exhibitors, the Chicago-based show promises to provide a cornucopia of 2-channel and surround systems to demo, not to mention a plethora of headphones to sample.

Showtime!

This year AVS is bringing you in-depth APXONA coverage in collaboration with Home Theater Shack. HTS correspondents Wayne Myers and Dennis Young will join me to report on the best sounding and most interesting rooms at the show.

We will live blog comments from various rooms in a dedicated AXPONA 2016 thread hosted on HTS, which can be found here. As the weekend progresses, I will post experience reports featuring photos and video clips in relevant sections of AVS, including quite a few in the 2-channel forum. Keep an eye on this thread for an up-to-date list of links.

Speaking of comments, if you have any questions or suggestions pertaining to the show, please leave a comment in this thread. I will check it regularly throughout the show and respond when I can. With so many rooms to choose from, I welcome any requests to check out a specific system.

@imagic are you going to be there Sunday? I can give you a demo of my HT room with the Behringer's you have thread about. I ended up using the 15's for my lcr and the 12's for my rear surrounds.

Yes I will be there pretty much until the end. Might have to leave an hour early to be safe since walking through the airport can take so long... but I will be here.

Any chance you can check out the new Bryston Cubed amps. I have a 2.5 SST2 and would like to know if it would be worth the upgrade.

I'd be really interested whether high end TT makers are even thinking about one of the key reasons many old die-hard audiophiles like me abandoned the vinyl format. And that is the laborious, p.i.t.a single play and flip system that is just too much in the age of convenience technology. IMO there is no reason why TT makers don't make an optional dust cover type attachment, that can fit over a TT, and use lasers to track the path of the tonearm & activate a lift...flip...place...and play kind of system. Something akin to the innovative, mechanical multi cassette changers that Nakamichi employed. With today's computing power...there simply is no excuse for the TT makers to stay in such a locked minded fixation on single side play. It's one of the main pig headed things that sunk the format. Give me a laser based, programmable vinyl placement accessory and I'll be back into my dust collecting Technics SP10mk2/Grado Signature Arm/cartridges system in a gypsy minute. I;d be very interested if anyone at that show is even thinking about experimenting on that line. Could be a great niche to exploit.

My vote for "must hear" demo would be the AIX records room. Go in, listen to Mark Waldrep explain his work in high-res audio, hear his recordings. One of the best listens at the show. I couldn't help bringing some discs home.

The "gotta hear" headphones would be the Shure SRH-1840 (open) and SRH-1540 (closed).

I suspect it was initially locked, but that the doors and walls just crumbled 30 second into his first demo loop.

I read that klaus of Odessey amps is showing this year. I was considering his amps for my theatre but haven't found any new info about owners that isn't from 2011 or newer.

He sure was there, with easily the most eccentric room to match his personality.

Has his amp line changed at all? What was he showing? What I always hesitated on with his amps were the power ratings to power my triad silvers. I just didn't know if they had the power I needed.

Wow what a fun day! I was able to meet @imagic on the first floor with a few other avs buddys from the Chicago land area. We seen Seaton Audios atmos setup and it was amazing. The bass in there was great to! We seen the jbl room and a lot of other rooms. Here's some of the pictures I took from my iphone6+. I'm sure there will be better pictures posted once Mark gets back home.
I have more but these are all cell phone pictures so I'll wait for the better ones to be posted by a better camera.

I enjoyed running into you guys and agree Seaton had a great room. Glad to see AMD hear a true AVS-style heavy duty Atmos system at a high-end audio show.

Next time let me know when you're in attendance of the expo. We could've collaborated on this convention. I am a photographer as well and love to take pictures at events. I didn't take any this time as I just got back from my vacation and just wanted to enjoy Axpona without burdening myself with a camera for another day.

PS: my very very short recap

The highlight of the event: Legacy Audio Focus SE Speaker (They had it placed a bit too far from the backwall IMO and the bass was lacking. I am sure it can be very powerful but on the Pitbull 'Across the world' and Godsmack 'Serenity' tracks I tested, it was very light). But wow, I don't think I have heard my CD with such clarity ever before.

Biggest disappointment setup: Revel F208. Whoever set them up in the room could not have botched up their positioning any more. I took my friends to the room where they had the F208 setup so they could finally hear what i was gushing about and man, what a disappointment. There was not an iota of bass coming from the speakers. Absolutely flat. Not a single sign of bass guitar, drum or beat. I don't know how they managed to do that but they sounded way less authoritative than a bookshelf speaker. And honestly that was the whole point of this speaker is it not? With great detail, clarity, imaging and soundstage, they can hit the low notes really well to the point where you won't miss a sub. My friends looked at me as if I was on crack and they didn't spend more than a minute in the room as it was not an impressive demo.

More later.

[Bed] Speakers: Martin Logan Motion 40 | Receiver: Peachtree Decco125 Sky | [Living] Speakers: B&W 804 Diamonds | Pre-Amp: Parasound P6 | Amp: Rotel RB-1582 MKII | Subwoofers: 2x REL T5i | [Office] Speakers: B&W CM6 S2 Bookshelves + ML Dynamo 300 sub | Receiver: Yamaha R-N803 | [Theater] Speakers: 2x Polk Audio LSiM 707 Towers + 706C Center + 4x 703 Bookshelves + 2x rc60i Ceiling + 2x Martin Logan Depth i | Receiver: Yamaha RX-A3070

I just went the to Home Theater Shack and read through the AXPONA 2016 thread. Wow, I got really lucky in that I went to nearly all the same rooms you guys did. And I agree with so much of what was posted there.

One of the best parts of this business is coming home with a few newly discovered songs to demo. Many of these were oldies but goodies, but some take on new life - particularly Supertramp's Bloody Well Right - which is played endlessly, along with Rush and Pink Floyd, on Chicago's The Drive radio station.

No matter, when I heard it through the Wilson Audios backed by 160w monoblock tube amps, it reminded me of why I like this stuff in the first place. It's hard to beat a good song, mastered well, played through good gear, and shared with good folks.

Also, I was tricked two or three times into thinking, "oh, I did read that they would have live music, so that room is playing it." For me, the Martin Logan's backed by McIntosh amps had me fooled. I think JBL was another.

This was my first high end audio show and I had a good time. It was nice leaving with the feeling that my Selah Audio kit speakers compared very favorably to many speakers costing way more. If I had 15,000 in my pocket I would have left with those Enigmacoustics speakers though. I could see how they aren't for everyone but I thought they were great.
