Help with Cartridge/stylus ID (Technics SL-D2)

I bought a Technics SL-D2 at a garage sale 10 years ago for my daughter. She recently 'upgraded' to a new TT and I've inherited the Technics.

It sounds 'OK', but there is very little bass, even from brand new 'audiophile' vinyl.

I'm wondering if it needs a Stylus and/or Cartridge refresh. I've tried my best to adjust the cart.

I don't want to be chasing red herrings, so thought I should figure out the currently installed Cartridge/stylus.

The Cartridge has a "MA 20" on the face. The stylus is labeled with "Shure HE".

I know there has been 100's of hours of listening since I bought the TT used at the garage sale for $10.

Thanks,
AJ

My TT is also a SL-D2. Love it.

I currently use a JVC 4MD-20X, but unless you have a quadraphonic receiver, that's probably overkill and way above what you need to spend.

The other cartridges that I have used are Ortophone OMP 5E and AT125LC.

Just curious on which Phono pre-amp you're connecting the TT to...

I figured out the issue and will post an update after I answer your question.

I'm currently using the built-in phono pre-amp in the Marantz SR6010.

I built a VSPS with Mica caps and upgraded op amps a few years ago and it does a very fine job, but haven't done any a/b testing between it and the built-in since upgrading to the SR6010. (pure laziness on my part).

Thanks for the question,
AJ

Interestingly, after taking the pictures of the stylus for this forum, when I put it back together, it just felt like it 'seated' better ???

I found a discussion on the Guru protractor/positioning and decided to give that a shot.

Amazingly, it now sounds terrific (better than ever).

I'm not sure if it is the Guru positioning or the stylus being removed/replaced (probably hadn't been removed/reseated in 20+ years).

Listening to 'The Doors : The End" on 180g last night, I was shocked at the strength of the drum kit.

Very very pleased.

Thanks all,
AJ
