Seems kind of counter productive being hard wired point to point and only being able to utilize only one room of music whereas with JRIVER , I can listen to music in 3 different (4 really ) rooms, wirelessly (is this a word?) with dlna compliant components.

There are ways to make it wireless to. I thought you had said you had Roon working in all your rooms except where the Oppo was and that you liked it otherwise

Yes. You are correct. So the question is.....how would I cicumvent the USB cable to the oppo? Can the Raspberry Pi be used wirelessly?

You wouldn't. You would go usb from the rasberry Pi to the Oppo USB DAC input.

I am assuming you are using a wifi dongle on the Oppo? The Rasberry Pi does have wireless so you dont need ethernet if you have a good signal near where its going. I switched to the wireless last night to try it and it seems to be working fine.

So yeah, you can hook the Rasberry Pi up to WiFi and just run a USB cable from the Rasberry Pi to the USB DAC input of the Oppo.

I think you identified the missing component..........my oppo is hardwire to my network. And it would be impractical to hook Raspberry Pi to the oppo with a usb, since the oppo is technically in another room. I am looking to have the Raspberry Pi talk to the oppo wirelessly...is this possible?

If you already have Ethernet cable going to the Oppo, you would just plug that same Ethernet cable into the Rasberry pi and then run a usb cable from the Rasberry pi to the usb input on the Oppo.

It’s not impractical. It’s just the way it would be done if you wanted to use roon on the Oppo. Roon can’t see the Oppo over its own network card. It needs the Rasberry pi to talk to Roon and send the data out the USB port.

no app needed. If you install the Ropieee OS you just type in http://ropieee.local/ and it goes to a settings GUI

I'm a big fan of GoGo Penguin, great sounding recording, not the usual jazz. They are touring pretty soon, not a lot of dates here in the states yet.

Marantz AV8802a, PS Audio PerfectWave dac running Tidal MQA, GoldenEar Triton Reference, GoldenEar XXL center, GoldenEar Supersat 5's and 3's for Atmos, GoldenEar Aon 2's rear, Parts Express U-18 sub, Oppo DVD, Parts Express 15 sub kit, Epson 5030 projector, Crown XLS2500 X 3, Bryston 4Bsst, PrimaLuna Prologue 5 amp.

Cool. I like them a lot. Reminds me of EST (esbjorn svensson trio)

I will check out their tour dates. I would love to hear them live.

No, I stopped the trial. I think it works better for systems who have music on multiple servers and want to send it to multiple rooms. I have all my music on one computer and only use it on one system.

that makes sense.

Yeah, it’s best for people who have music on hard drives, have a Tidal sub and want to play to multiple rooms. It does have some other cool features like the album/ artist info and DSP/ upsampling options but it’s not cheap so I get why it’s not for everyone.

I am only using it for one room right now but plan to add at least two more spots.

Considering you can make a Rasberry pi endpoint for under $70 and use any speakers, It actually makes more sense than something like Sonos or Bluesound. J River comes close but not the same. Need DLNA and doesn’t have the same features.

Multi-room audio you say? Mine is more “quantity over quality” than Sid’s house, but it works

What is that?

Yes there are many ways to do whole home audio but none are as slick as Roon. If you just want to get all the speakers in your house playing the same thing then there are much cheaper options. But if you want the best interface with the highest res, dsp and upsampling, Roon is the best on the market imo.

Control4 with 8 zone matrix amp. It seems like Roon is a good solution if you need different endpoints in various places, but I hardwired everywhere around the house before the drywall went up. So, everything is in a central closet. It has 8 inputs. So, each zone could be independent (8 different sources at the same time) or tied together to play the same thing around the house.

Ah. That sounds nice. Does it have its own interface? Does it integrate with subs like Tidal, Spotify etc.? Hook up to music on local storage?

Yeah, Tidal, Pandora, XM, TuneIn/I heart radio, Spotify Connect and I think others built into “the core” as room would call it. I have a my music tab that pulls music direct from my QNAP NAS if you keep scrolling down on this screen.

I could volunteer to host the next two channel meet, unless you were really wanting to host. I wouldn’t mind showing my setup.

Purely two channel? Or do any subwoofers come into play (2.x)?

I have a CD that has been my go-to for any sound system evaluations or setup since it was released 26 years ago. I always like hearing this disc on different systems to see if I can discern any audible differences from my home system (not 2 channel-but 7.2).

I am local to you in southern Oakland county.

If a 2 channel GTG happens, I would like to attend, even though I do not have a 2 channel rig to show off myself.

Packing a lot of sound into a small room.
268 square feet/2144 cubic feet
7.2 surround sound.

Subwoofers are fine but my amp doesn’t have bass management.

Everyone is welcome. What CD is it you like to play?
