These are supposedly smoother than the last line. They fit with what I want for my basement though. Something decent, not too expensive, that can fill a large space and doesn't require a sub.

Yeah, went there too. I didn’t notice those. I do want the pro-ject turntable there though. That store was a lot more fun to checkout than Shinola.

Nice! I'm actually considering the upgrade, the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Esprit SB model instead of the base version so it comes with the acrylic platter. Probably stick with the base model for now. I'm considering building a tube pre-amp just because I'm curious how they sound with all the love for them.

Can't go wrong with the Pro-Ject. I'm just using their fairly inexpensive ($300?) phono pre, I'd love to hear a tube pre on my system but I just don't want to go down the tube rabbit hole.

I hear you there. I've never heard tube anything before though so the curiosity is strong. But I'm a computer scientist, I know bits and digital. I'd have a lot of learning to do before I could cobble together a tube pre-amp which has helped keep that curiosity at bay.

Also, side bar. @brian6751 and I were talking about this saturday. I thought I'd post it here for him to read but you might be interested as well. This Link (pulled from the internet archives) talks about a reason why vinyl is sometimes objectively better than digital. The database site mentioned in the article is still up though I'm unsure how often it's updated.

Read the article. Yep I am very aware of the Loudness Wars.

As for vinyl sounding better than digital, sure, if the vinyl is created using a better recording then the CD it CAN sound better than the CD at least for a while but the "...distinct character to vinyl.." the author mentions is distortion, cracks, and pops! lol

The only thing the article proves is that better recordings sound better but that goes for any medium. Putting it on vinyl didnt make it sound better, using an uncompressed mix did.

Anyhoo. I love listening to vinyl as much as the next person but its the whole experience I like. I dont try to convince myself that it is superior to digital when the playing field is level.

Almost 100% of my critical listening is to jazz music which is almost never compressed so I dont really have to deal with the loudness wars thing to begin with. I do when I listen to metal but it is what it is. I have a few metal albums on vinyl that still sound not-that-great

Saying all that, I have cool news. There will be a turntable at the GTG so please do bring your favorite records to share if you feel comfortable doing so!!!!

Wow big props to OneCall!

I had bought a pair of "open box" Klipsch RP-280F's from their Ebay store back when Ebay had a 20% off coupon so I got a really good deal. 40% off retail basically.

OneCall just called me and said they dont actually have those open box speakers anymore and offered me a brand new pair for the same price! Very cool considering it was Ebay that ate the 20% off coupon originally, not them.

Plus, I was able to use my 2% cash back credit card instead of paypal so I got an even better deal

Thats why I buy from places like OneCall and Crutchfield. Awesome customer service.

First thing my wife said was “those are not staying in this living room!” Lol

I think they still need a little more break in time but they sound really good. They get real loud easily and have a live sound to them similar to my DIYSG 1099’s. I think I may actually prefer them to the 1099’s for music overall. The Klipsch just sound more refined but the 1099 still beats it in the midrange. Not surprising since the 1099 is a three way.

Notice I compared it to the 1099’s and not my Phil BMR’s. These are two totally different speakers and the BMR is in another league IMO.

Earlier you mentioned wanting to hear the RF7 III on some Rogue gear. Well, I may have the next best thing coming. I have a Rogue Sphinx V2 on its way. I’m looking forward to hearing what the Klipsch sounds like on that tube hybrid.

The Klipsch do exactly what I am looking for in a speaker for my basement so I’m really happy with them.

The Swope boxes are built, just need to route the holes and paint, crossovers are built too. Once those are done I'll get started on the Nexus towers. I had a little delay as I "needed" to buy a track saw so I could do these right. Man does that thing make life easier.

Yeah track saws are great. I had one and sold it. I should have kept it.

Absolutely. Not much, but here's a few teasers. I'll get a few more up Saturday. You'll notice in the one pic my Jasper jig only goes down to 2 1/4", and I needed 1 12/16 for the tweeter. I sat there for a good hour trying to think of how to avoid having to either buy a different jig or just hand routing the hole. Turns out.... the cutout hole on the jig is exactly right and can use the pin to follow the inside as a guide. Solving and thinking through things like this is why I love wood working. First pic is the track saw getting started. Then the glue up, I like how pressure on the sides is all you really need for the Swopes. The pin guide I'm describing, and finally the stack of parts and my two assistant builders.
