Indeed slot ported, and recessed baffle is the only way to do it in my opinion. 3/4" baltic birch all around leaves plenty of thickness to do it with too.

They took two weeks to get here but they are really nice. Considering parts, labor, and time to make my own this seems like a helluva deal.

Surprisingly, even with some 70+ hour work weeks, I should be firing the Swopes up for the first time tonight. I installed the crossovers at about midnight last night, hope it's right! Last step is mounting drivers. Parts Express emailed and said they plan to ship the SD215A-88 needed for the Nexus speakers on 5/8. So I think we should still be on track to have both if you have it the third weekend of May.

At Art's GTG I told you I demoed the Pro-ject Carbon and the Rega Planar 1 and liked the Rega better. Well, I have since discovered that you cant adjust the anti skate on the Planar and the built in RCA are crap. The anti skate wouldnt be too terrible but its set really high and then they make that Rega Carbon cartridge use a high VTF to match up with it but normal non-Rega cartridges just dont work well at that high of VTF so you're kind of pigeon holed into using Rega carts. Its basically a shady way to make their carts proprietary. Well....screw that lol. I ordered a Pro-ject Carbon Esprit SB

So how those speakers coming? You listen to the Swopes yet? How they sound?

I stand by my statement that your real hobby is buying/selling things. Not home theater. Speakers are coming along. The swopes are absolutely fantastic. Less bass than I expected on the low end but everything sounds extremely balanced and clear. I've put a couple hours on them now and am extremely happy with them. I'm tempted to keep them as my personal speakers almost. Today I had my first full day to work on the Project Nexus speakers, which funnily enough coincided with the woofers arriving early. Got everything cut today and center baffle routed.

Since I don't have enough clamps, I picked up a new toy, going to try brad nailing the boxes to let the glue set, then just putty the holes. Figure since I'm painting it will work fine on these boxes. Was testing the depth settings and air power. It's quieter then I expected too. We'll see how it works out, I'm hoping it's worth the cost.

You can also see on top of the swopes some recent acquisitions for another hobby of mine

Ha! It does feel like that sometimes but I swear its not. I am just very particular about what I want and I won't be happy until it's done the way I want it. Call it anal retentive, OCD, whatever.

Example: Audio and video in the theater is done other than calibration. Not changing anything unless I have to. Also speakers in living room are done. The BMR's aren't going anywhere anytime soon. I'm also pretty sure the rest of that setup will be done after this next week.

Then there is the setup for the basement where the turntable is. That is almost done as long as I like the Project turntable enough to keep it which I'm pretty sure I will. You will be seeing a good deal on some Klipsch towers soon though 😁

Swopes look nice. Those Dayton woofers look really nice. So since I know you make your own beer and booze, I'm betting the board game nights are pretty fun, eh?

Wow. Lots of audio gear came in today lol. I am pretty much done guys. I mean it lol. I am totally happy with what I have in all my setups and I’m just going to enjoy the music/movies.

Two things though.

1. The Pro-ject Debut Esperit SB walks all over the Rega Planar 1 (In overall quality)

2. The Original Ascend Sierra-1 is an awesome little speaker and should not be overlooked by anyone shopping for a great bookshelf for music listening. I know there is now a Sierra-2 and even a Nrt variant but the vanilla Sierra-1 still sounds awesome. I have wanted a pair of these for a long time. I was going to buy them and switched my order to the Sierra-2. I didn’t care for the Sierra-2 and returned it. I believe if I had never changed my order and received the Sierra-1 I would have never bought the BMR’s. I would have been happy. They are that good, honestly.

Hi Brian.

In what ways does the Pro-Ject beat the Rega? Are you comparing using the same cartridge?

Jolida Fusion Preamp, Jolida JD1000P Amp, VPI Scout turntable with Dynavector 10X5 cartridge, Paradigm Studio 100 v.5 speakers, Sonica DAC streaming lossless files. Furman Elite 15 Power Conditioner.

Well, maybe I shouldn't say it that way. I mean in more ways than just sound. I think its just a better quality turntable. The plinth doesn't have seams or a dull finish. It has an adjustable anti-skate. It has a speed selector. It has an acrylic platter that doesn't need a felt mat that sticks to your records when you lift them off. It has nice removable rca's. The rca's on the Rega are cheapo and pick up everything around them...The Rega just feels cheap compared to the Esprit in almost every category.

As far as carts, I am judging them by their stock cartridge which I know isn't apples to apples but to me the 2M Red sounds as good as the Carbon on this deck. (yes I have seen the You Tube video )

I do have a Nagaoka mp-110 that I tried to use on the Rega but since the anti-skate is non adjustable, I could not get it to track correctly. I was having to set the VTF too high to counter the anti-skate and it just was not ideal.

I haven't put the Nagaoka on the Esprit yet but at least when I do try I should have more adjustment available to make it track right.

So when I say "walks all over..." I mean its just a much better all around turntable "IMO". I'm no turntable expert. I just know what I like.

Thanks Brian. That’s good practical information. So often we talk of measurements and theory. Real life usage tells more about good design. I have to say that on my VPI with aluminum platter and felt mat, I’ve never had it come off with the record. Maybe this has to do with the quality of the mat.

I have read many people say they don't have issues with the felt mats. I think it is the quality of the mat and the indoor humidity levels. It wouldnt happen to me all the time but it was annoying when it did and I like the acrylic platter a lot better.

Yeah, I wanted to like the Rega especially after watching Ian's review and it does sound good stock but I was just really disappointed in the build quality and the non-adjustable anti-skate. The Pro-Ject is an obvious step up in quality IMO. Plus I like not having to pull the platter off when I play my 45's.

June-> Fathers day, BTW

Count me in, now that I'm in the JVC Dila club

Testament to the Epson 8350, though- longest time I ever ran a projector, nearly 7 years.
Prior to the 8350, I upgraded every 2-3 years.

Yep- my X570R appears to run great so far.

Very quiet even in non ECO mode

Running tests from my Sony X800 UHD player.

Blank/blue screen when I tried playing some UHD discs, including your GotG V2 disc!

Probably some video settings on the X800 and/or the ~8yr old Monoprice 25ft HDMI 24awg cable. I will try the new Monoprice 25ft HDMI UHD Premium Cert cable you recommended that I bought last week.

If that fails, I'll buy the RUIpro fiber HDMI on Amazon 30ft/10m

But I played several 4K SDR and HDR clips from the Youtube app on the X800, and most looked spectacular in Cinema and Natural modes.

HDR mode needs calibration, as it makes stuff I tried look blown out with gamma and/or contrast blown out, with a posterized look.

We need to find a good ISF calibrator in SE MI or surrounding areas/states willing to come and ISF this puppy for a reasonable sum. Would make for a great HT meet.

I bet it is the HDMI cable.

I reached out to @chadb a while ago. I was told I would be contacted again when he gets ready to head out this way again.

2 rookie mistakes on my part- the output of the X800 was running through a 4x2 HDMI 1.2(!) matrix switch. I plugged the old 25ft HDMI cable into the X800 directly, and 4K UHD discs were visible, but with full field digital "twinkling star" noise.

Swapping out the <HDMI 2.0 cable with the current Monoprice 25ft Premium Cert 2.0b cable worked perfectly.

Watched the same scene from the original Blade Runner 4K UHD disc we viewed on Art's rig- awesome picture from the X570R

Appears the X570R auto switched to HDR pic mode, and it looked great without the blown out look

The Youtube 4K vids I played on the old cable/switch worked because the X800 was outputting them as 1080p- the X800 may not support 4K in the Youtube app (?)
