Lampizator and Von Schweikert - Lampizator has a tube buffer, big amp, and some other gear on display driving the smaller brothers of the Von Schweikerts from earlier, the E3s ($10K pair).

Everything I’ve heard from the Von Schweikert line has been impressive, and these are no exception. Do they hand with the Revel F228be and Magico A3 in the high-performance/price $10K club? I’d say yes.

Raidho & AVM: AVM was paired up with Elac at Axpona, it looks like they’ve targeted a higher end partner this year.

AVM makes German designed, engineered, and built AV electronics of all stripes. It’s beautiful to look at and feels expensive. It probably is, no prices listed.

In the main room they’ve paired their Ovation preamp and Ovation CD/Streamer box with two of their Ovation series monoblocks, each putting out 1,250 watts (and weighing over 150 lbs) into a pair or Raidho C2.1 towers. The Raidhos sound much bigger than they are, with a beautiful top end courtesy of Raidhos excellent ribbon tweeter, and two small woofers pumping out more volume and bass than they have any business doing.

In the adjoining room they have a more intimate setup with their Ovation CS Integrated CD/Streaming/DAC/Amp which puts out 500wpc, can stream Tidal and Qobuz natively, has Bluetooth with aptX, and can be controlled via remote or amp. It was powering some Raidho C1.1 bookshelves, which don’t sound as big as the towers, but are still nimble with nice bass output for their size and unimpeachable imaging prowess.

All in all two very high-end yet well designed and stylish systems.

TAD, VPI, Wolf, and Ayre: Tad Micro Evolution Ones running off a Wolf Audio universal music server being driven by Ayre amps and DACs.

The TAD ME1s are sort of the ‘old gods’ version of the Elac UB5s. OG Andrew Jones 3-way standmount w/coaxial tweet/mid design, and they always sound amazing, with a Beryllium tweeter and neat side panels that act as port covers and strengthen the cabinet.

For the turntable lovers, the VPI Prime Bespoke shown is one of five, with a double plinth, leather and wood covering, and a Red Stradivarius cartridge.

TADs on sale for $10K right now (normally $15K), $10K for the turntable, $5.5K for the cartridge.

Bob Carver and KEF: Bob Carver is showing off their new 275 amp (as an homage to the McIntosh with the model name, but it actually puts out 90 watts x 2 channels). $2,750 with a 5 year warranty that includes tubes. It can also apparently repair broken tubes by blowing a fuse and using a ‘getter’ to pull impurities down out of the way, replace the fuse and the tube is good to go. This is apparently by far the best selling product in the Bob Carver lineup.

Bob Carver is also going to release a new all-tube preamp for around $2,500 in June.

The amps are driving KEF Blade 2 speakers. This is my first time hearing these, and I’m very impressed. A variety of music was played, techno, female vocals, jazz, rock, Flight of the Cosmic Hippo, and they sounded great on them all. They use cardioid bass drivers to help eliminate room nodes.

Either the amps or the KEFs have a bit of high-end rolloff, I’m familiar with Flight of the Hippo and there was a bit of lack of he high end sparkle and bite to the banjo strings. Still sounded very nice, just a bit smoother over.

Wilson & Audio Research:

Wilson is showing off their new Sasha DAW with Audio Research electronics and Audio Research Reference Monoblocks. Source was a Mark Levinson music streamer.

I remember thinking that most of the Wilson stuff sounded less than stellar at Axpona due to setup ( I did like their small Sabrinas). This was a totally different story today, and I’m not sure why. The hotel suite is smaller than the room they had similar speakers in at Axpona, there’s no room treatment here save some plywood over the windows, but these sounded amazing.

Wilson asks $36K for these and after the demo I could almost see them being worth that. These had detail on a level I haven’t experienced before yet absolutely no harshness. They were the first speakers I’ve heard today that not only imaged well side to side, but that threw a huge depth of soundstage front to back as well. I felt like I heard drums and bells whizzing past my head.

Seriously, I can’t run out of superlatives, awesome speakers.

Mark Levinson and JBL: Mark Levinson is introducing a new Integrated amp, the 5802, that comes in at a new lower price point of ‘just’ $6,000.

They had it driving the new JBL L100 Classics. I’ve heard these speakers at Axpona last year and I found them pleasant, if a bit old-school in presentation. I’d say they’re about the same this year, but the setup or perhaps the new ML Integrated have helped open up the treble and give them a better semblance of soundstage. The bass is still soft and pillowy. Good for classic rock and the like.

They also have the new 4312G on display, which apparently replaces the 4312SE, though they didn’t know what the exact differences are.

Sonus Faber and Pro-Ject:

Pro-Ject was showing off a lot of cool electronics, including:

Pre-Box S2 Digital: This is an MQA DAC with USB, Toslink, And Coaxial Digital input that also includes a remote and a headphone amp.

Streambox S2: Roon endpoint media streamer with USB our, natural to pair with the Pre-Box

Tube-Box DS2 and Pre-Box DS2 Analogue: These are a phono preamp and an analog preamp respectively. They had them in the turntable circuit, but that wasn’t playing.

Amp-Box RS2: This is a really cool unit, 110wpc into 8 ohms, 180wpc into 4, tube input stage going into Hypex UCD amps. Comes with a switchmode power supply but can get an outboard toroidal that will bypass the internal switchmode for $650ish.

Pro-Ject Six Perspect SP Turntable - It’s an acrylic turntable with speed control.

Sonus Faber Sonetto 2s: Absolutely gorgeous speakers, good bass output, a bit bright, but could’ve been their musical selections when trended towards harder rock.

Merrill Audio and Muraudio:

One last post to round out the day. Merrill Audio makes some extremely expensive and extremely good looking components. I haven’t heard much about them, but the price point is a bit above my pay grade.

Muraudio showed their SP1 combo electrostatic/dynamic speaker. It was certainly accomplished at throwing a lot of sound around the room. I think I’ll leave it at that.

That’s it for today, I’ll continue tomorrow. Now off to try to find some hot pot for dinner.

About to start a new day to try to cover the rest of the rooms. Last night MBL ran a special after-hours listening session. One of their dealers is a big fan of reel to reel and had a custom reel to reel deck made for him with a ‘cost no object’ parts and design spec. MBL also apparently has access to quite a few studio-master reel to reel tapes, many of which they played last night.

It was a breathtaking experience. The custom reel to reel and ultra-high quality tapes had zero discernible noise floor, just utterly transparent, just as good as the best digital recordings I’ve ever heard. On top of that the dynamic range of the recordings exceeded anything I’ve experienced before, and MBL wasn’t afraid to crank up the volume.

Nirvana, Blood Sweat & Tears, Pearl Jam, The Who, and a mind-bendingly good recording of Hugh Masekela’s Stimela (the coal train) sounded so incredibly real they you could close your eyes and imagine the bands were in the room with you.

MBL does dynamics like nobody else, even at almost painful SPL levels there wasn’t a hint of dynamic compression or strain. I half expected to wake up with my ears ringing today, but everything was so clean I seem to have escaped no worse for wear, other than the inevitable disappointment that my home system can’t come close to what I heard last night.

Triangle / Tsakaridis / Soulines: Antal Audio was showing off the ‘other’ line of French speakers along with Greek Tsakaridis electronics and a Serbian Souline turntable.

I say ‘other’ just because Focal is so much more we’ll known, but the performance of these Triangle Esprit Australe towers eclipsed anything I’ve heard from Focal excepting their much more expensive Sopra No 2.

The Esprit Australes go for just $4,500/pair, come in piano white, black, and walnut, and have gorgeous glass plinths that they sit on. They have a cool horn loaded tweeter with an advanced phase plug and waveguide designed to maximize dynamic response, speed, and room coverage. Excellent speakers all around, certainly worth a look for anyone looking for something French.

Tsakaridis is a Greek electronics maker specializing in tubes. They have 150w Tube Monoblocks that go for $4,000 (which we’re driving the Triangles) but also have a new $3,000 tube integrated, 70wpc, designed to go head to head with PrimaLuna. The big selling point with Tsakaridis is everything is built in Athens, not China, and comes with a 5 year warranty (90 days on tubes, Russian Tung Sols).

Finally there’s a Serbian turntable by Souline. I don’t know a whole lot about turntables, but the Antal rep said it has three adjustable legs, dual plinths separated by cork and rubber, and a separate motor section. I believe he said it goes for $4,000, but doesn’t include a tone arm or cartridge.

Avantagarde / Viva / Aurender - Suncoast Audio, a local stereo store, is one of the sponsors for this entire show. They have two rooms set up, this is the first. I spoke with the owner who’s extremely friendly and knowledgeable about his products. I haven’t been to their shop yet, but now I’m going to have to pay a visit. Anyone looking for hear in SWFL should check them out, they carry a lot of cool stuff from what they’re showing.

Avant-garde Uno Finos: These are the ‘baby’ Avantegardes with a horn loaded tweeter and midrange crossing over at 250hz to an 8” dynamic cone driven by an internal 500watt amp. They were being powered by a lovely 8 watt SET Viva amp and still handled big dynamics with plenty of volume and an incredibly pure uncolored sound. Guitars especially have a great dynamic snap with these. They also threw one of the best center images I’ve heard, and did it even relative up close.

Magico / Luxman / Lumin:

Remember back at Axpona where there was the big battle over the best $10,000/pair speakers? Magico has decided to step away from that fray by giving their A3s a 20% (and then some) price hike to $12,300.

They still sound very nice. Smooth, detailed, nice soundstage and imaging, I couldn’t fault anyone for choosing them.

They were being run by some beautiful Luxman gear and a Lumin streamer that can store MQA albums.

It’s a very nice system, and one of the few that set up real room treatments (MBL did as well). Still, for similar money I was more impressed by the Dynaudio Contour 60/Hegel H590 and Von Schweikert E3/Lampizator setups.

Avantgarde/ Soulution / Berning / Velodyne:

This room had the big dog Avantgarde Trios. The room is too small for them, but they still sound very good. With enough space I’m sure these would be absolutely amazing.

These basically are everything the Uni Finos above are, but turned up to 11. As a show special, you can buy the demo units for about the same price as new Uno Finos.

Some fancy tube monoblocks and Velodyne subs are helping them sound their best.

Raven Audio:

Raven Audio is most known for their tube amplifiers, but they have a new speaker line that they were showing off, and they significantly exceeded my expectations.

The towers are their ‘Performance’ line and the stand-mounts are their ‘Reference’ line. The feature that immediately attracted my attention were the foam waveguides - designed to improve directivity as well as reduce unwanted diffraction and resonances.

The Performance towers go for $3,995/pair and the Reference standmounts for $7,995/pair. The Reference line uses higher grade drivers and components and is +/- 2db from 45hz-28khz.

Both use ring radiator tweeters (though different ones) and sound great, with a lot of punch, great imaging, solid dynamics, surprising bass output, and very true-to-life tonality.

Apparently the mastering engineer Bob Katz is at the show and spent half an hour with the Reference line listening to his own mixes and have them an enthusiastic seal of approval.

There will be an active version of the Reference line coming later at an additional cost.

Deja Vu Audio: Deja Vu is displaying these very cool looking vintage style speakers featuring an 18” Bag End woofer, a Western Electric clone compression driver, and a huge bent horn. They also make the military-surplus style tube amp monoblocks (8 watts each SET).

The system sounded very nice with no discernible horn tonality, and the big woofer did dig deep.

Audio Note UK:

The European division of Audio Note is showing off a stereo SET Tube amp (12wpc) as well as associated electronics and a pair of speakers featuring external crossovers, an 8” driver and a tweeter modeled after classic Snell designs.

They’re designed for corner placement as displayed. Good bass and a beautiful liquid syrupy thick midrange, but a bit strident in the treble.

Harbeth / Luxman: Harbeth is showing off their SH5 Plus standmounts rubbing off of some Luxman gear.

I initially wasn’t impressed walking into the room, but when I snagged a chair in the sweet spot everything blossomed. These speakers apparently need some care in setup. Absolutely nature with vocals, some of the best vocals I’ve heard all show. Not the last word in handling complex material, but they are very pretty.

The Luxman 509 Integrated is cool looking and apparently runs the first two watts in class a.

Borrensen Acoustics:

Biggest disappointment of the show. Not necessarily the speakers, they sounded nice, if not necessarily better than anything I’ve heard from his old company Raidho, but for the near half hour I spent in the room they spend maybe 2 minute playing the speakers and the rest trying to sell snake oil cables, power distribution, and equipment risers.

Aavik amps aren’t cheap, if they need thousands of dollars in additional power cables and purifiers to work right there’s clearly a fault in the design.

I really wanted to love these speakers like I love Raidho, but if clearly the company is more interested in selling power cables than speakers.

Thanks, I saw that Raven was going to be exhibiting with their own speakers instead of the Legacy speakers they have been using for several years now. I was wanting to find out more about the new Raven speakers. It's hard to tell from the pics, how was the finish and general appearance of them?

The ring radiator on the stand-mount looks like some that I've seen on various Sonus Faber models, as well as on Joshua Miles' incredible Allyson speakers.

Fit and finish were very nice, but the floorstanders were preproduction prototypes, the final finish may differ. The standmounts did have a cutout at the back where a plate amp could go for an active version.

The designer mentioned he got the idea for the foam waveguides from an old Dunleavy design.

I thought both of them were quite impressive for the prices being asked. Perhaps @imagic can request a pair for review. They sounded like they’d measure quite well.

Spendor / Creek / VPI:

This was the ‘budget’ room for audio store ‘a la carry productions’. It’s actually a pretty sweet sounding system for less than $10K all-in. The little Spendor A7 towers have nice bass output for the size due to a complex bottom channel port system.

Vienna Acoustics / VPI / DSA:

Neat room. At the center is a huge tri-armed VPI turntable and DSA pure class A amps (125w per monoblocks).

The VPI is set up with a stereo cart as well as a mono, not sure what the third is. They played some mono LPs, my first time ever hearing them, and it was surprisingly good. Even though the album and signal were all mono I do somehow heard a soundstage and depth, the brain is a funny thing.

The Vienna Acoustics Liszt speakers have swivelable coaxial drivers on top, and cool clear woofers.

The huge DSA amps have active cooling so that they don’t run as hot as other Class A amps.

Nola is showing off some crazily small speakers, the Brio Quattro system that comes with two ultramini monitors (dual 3.5” drivers, one OB and one in a sealed box) combined with two Nola-built 8” sealed powered subs. The minimpnitors acoustically roll off below 90hz, so no bass management is needed, just dial in the low-pass on the subs.

The sound is amazing for the size. When I walked in I did a double take upon hearing the speakers playing the big sound that drew me in. I watched other show attendees doing the same as they came in. These mess with your head and expectations.

They blend very well with the Nola subs for a truly full-range room-filling system. This would be an incredibly system for anyone with limited space. $5,000ish for the whole set.

They’re being driven by a Rogue Cronus Magnum and Electeoacompaniet electronics.

Ryan Audio / Auralic:

Ryan has their Beryllium-tweeters S610s on display, apparently they wanted to bring the big dog S840s but they’re out for review somewhere. Ryan is going to introduce a smaller floor stander in the S series between the S610 monitors and the S840, tentatively the S630, it will be a 3-way tower with a Beryllium tweeter, 4” midrange, and dual 6.5” woofers.

As it is the S610 is a very pleasant speaker.

Auralic is on a mission to help you wring every last ounce of performance from your streaming or every last penny out of your wallet depending on how you look at it.

Their very nice Streaming DAC has been joined by a dedicated DAC-less streamer and a dedicated Master Clock. Technically the streaming DAC does everything the other products do, but if you really want to chase that last 1%...

Vanatoo:

Vanatoo is showing off their Transparent Zero, which has a cool little moveable bracket (it comes with an Allen wrench) so that it can be oriented at different angles and orientations depending if you want to put it on a desk, a table, a shelf, on top of a refrigerator, whatever.

They also have their new Transparent One Encore on display. Following up on the very successful Transparent One the Encore offers biamping for each speaker (though all the amps are still located in one cabinet), Bluetooth streaming, an upgraded tweeter, and a remote control.

They sound great for the price of just $550. These would make great speakers for a dorm room, bedroom, kids room, bathroom, wherever you want a turn-key high quality audio system cheap enough for an impulse buy. They have surprisingly deep bass for the size.

Handling some drivers they have out, they’re all hefty and beefy, high quality parts.

Joseph Audio / Doshi Audio:

Jospeh Audio brought their Pulsars. I remember not being blown away by Joseph Audio at Axpona, but it’s a different story here. The Pulsars are legit.

It’s hard to explain why they sound so amazing, but I’d chalk it up to texture. Everything just sounds right, voices, instrument, everything sounds true to life with tons of detail but no exaggeration. Tons of depth and width to the soundstage and some spooky-good imaging. They’re also legitimately hitting 32hz in-room. Amazing. $7,709/pair.

The Doshi Audio tube gear is very expensive, but nothing to complain about performance-wise.

Falcon Audio / Primare:

Falcon makes true-to-history BBC LS3/5A monitor reproductions and even has a BBC license to reproduce them. They went as far as to source grill cloth from the original source the BBC used.

They’re a bit odd this day in age, presenting a 15 Ohm load, and have mylar tweeters, but they sound dang pleasant and not ‘old school retro’.

They have real soundstage and imaging, and a pleasant unforced treble range. They’re sealed cabinets, but still have OK bass, very tight if not super deep.

$2,995 a pair in a standard finish , $3,295 in the shown burl walnut, and hand made in Oxfordshire England.

Being driven by a 100wpc Primare amp from Sweden.

Volti Audio / Border Patrol:

Volti is showing off the new version of their Rival with an inset front baffle so that a grill will sit flush with the outer edge.

It’s a well-built speaker with an expertly applied veneer, and according to the owner the midrange driver alone costs more than all of the drivers in the similar Klipsch Cornwall.

They’re ‘live’ sounding speakers, I’m picking up a bit of horn coloration and failure to blend, but it’s only on certain content, overall they’re exciting and fun.

Border Patrol is (in)famous for producing a DAC that measured so poorly Stereophile assumed it was broken and sent it back, only to be told it was working as intended. I’m not sure if they’re any better now or not.

Atrevit Acoustic -

Atrevit brought a direct-heated 300B SET amp and some speakers whose design I can only describe as ‘What if the hobbits of the shire discovered carbon fiber?’

Aside from the, uhm, ‘creative’ aesthetics they sound nice enough. 18” powered subs, two 12” open baffle midrange per ‘tower’ and a 1.5” compression driver in a short horn. The 8wpc set amp drives the compression driver, everything else is handled by outboard Class AB solid state amps.

Paradigm / Anthem:

Paradigm brought their flagship Persona 9H, and it’s, as expected, phenomenal (though a bit too big for the room), but the real story is the 1/16th the price Premier 800F.

Wow, those little towers can crank out the high quality, clean, undistorded, sound. Great bass, great treble, great mids, excellent imaging and soundstage, these sound better than many speakers that cost quite a bit more. These are a new benchmark in the $2,000/pair range, bravo Paradigm, these things are winners.

I’ll also give props to Paradigm for bringing Anthem gear with ARC and actually using it to correct their speakers’ in-room response, that may have gone a long way to helping them shine (in comparison a few other presenters went off on somewhat hostile rants at the concept of room correction and/or DSP, unprompted).

There’s also a photo of one of the Personas in the new Merlot finish.
