Rega Planar Turntables

Is it worth getting a Rega Planar 3 over the newer P3?

With a decent cartridge and in good to excellent condition, I would recommend taking it. I have the newer RP3. I bought it as damaged box B stock, which was simply a 6 inch scratch on the shipping box.

I got it at a tremendous discount. At MSRP with the Elys cartridge, I would pass and get this instead - https://www.amazon.com/Marantz-TT-15...antz+turntable

That's a shootout between the two, and I think it does a good job showing what you get in the P3 vs RP3. His impressions are the P3 is improved in most aspects over the RP3, but $500 is half of what a new P3 costs, without cartridge, so the savings might be worth missing out on the improvements. I think this video might be helpful in making that decision.

Per seller it's in immaculate shape and bought in 2015. If I can get it for $500 is that a bargain?

With a decent 100 buck or so cartridge, like an Ortofon Red, Nagaoka MP110 or a Rega Carbon, I think that is a good deal. With a 300-750 dollar cartridge like a Dynavector 10x5, Goldring 1006, Hana EH or the like, that would be a steal. You'll have a good turntable, and you won't want for anything else for a long while.

It comes with 2m red. Per the owner he said the Elys 2 was not standard with the rp3. Is this true?

I am not sure when the Elys was started being packaged in. It doesnt matter. It can come with a cart, or none at all. The 2m red is well rated. You'll like it. There is not much to be had in a higher end cartridge unless you start spending over 700 bucks, and at that level, you'll want a capable phono stage that can load and be adjusted to get the most out of a such a cart.

I would dump the 2M Red and for a budget cart and go w/the Nagaoka. One the higher end the Dyanavector 10x5 would really lift the SQ to another level.

Can the rp3 load and be adjusted?

The adjustments I speak of are done on the phono stage. The turntable doesnt do any of it.

If you are using a built-in phono stage, the 2m red is plenty. An external phono stage can be the same or can have an infinite ability to be tweaked.

Do you have a phono capable amp? If not, what phono stage are you planning to use?

A part of me says to go with a new uturn orbit plus. Is a used rp3 the better option?

I just retired a RP3 to give to the daughter. Replaced it with a Technics SL-1200G over the weekend.

The RP3 and Elys 2 is a real nice package. In my situation, the Elys eventually started to hum a bit. I swapped the Elys out with a Vas Nova M/C cart a few months ago (which is now in the Technics). That made the RP3 sound spectacular. Day and night change for what I already thought was a great TT.

The RP3 was purchased as a demo unit about 3 years ago. It served me well and I expect my daughter to get a lot of use out of it.

If you need to buy a phono stage, get one that gives you the flexibility to use a MM or MC cart.

Your seller may have bought the TT without a cart (hence no Elys2).

This should come down to how much you plan on using your TT and the associated equipment. Start with the Ortofon and evolve from there before going too far down the rabbit hole.

Very true. You can sink thousands into a TT set up, or a couple hundred bucks. Both will give you the same amount of enjoyment if you make the right decisions based on your situation and expectations.

Well I let the bid go after all for the rp3. I couldn't see paying $500 for a used one.
Most likely will go for a Uturn Orbit Plus with the included 2m blue cartridge for $475. The used rp3 had the red. Another reason I let the bid go.

Personally, I think used turntables that don't come from a reputable shop or someone the buyer knows personally are more for people who are into the possibility of doing some repair/tinkering. I get nervous about the idea that the seller may not have the same ideas as I do about what constitutes good condition, along with the fact that some of the wearing parts are closer to needing replacement. Then, if this is something being shipped to you, you have to trust that the seller knows how to package it safely. Those risks may all be worthwhile to you, but I don't like it for myself.

If your dilemma is that you don't want to go above $500, I think I'd approach it the way you are, and I might even go with the U-Turn specifically if that meets your needs. If your choice was really between the used RP3 and a new P3, and you were willing to pay for the P3, then I think the clear choice is the P3. The improvements Rega made between models in this case are things I would not like to know I am missing by choosing the previous model.

With the U-Turn, you can even get it for less by getting it with the Grado Black for $166 less, which can easily be upgraded to a Grado Red with just a stylus change at some point for $100. That's a personal choice between Grado Red and Ortofon 2M Blue, of course, but they make it an easy option. Ortofon 2M Blue styli are going to cost you $189 each time (which may be worth it if you really like how the 2M Blue sounds).

Have you heard of the Music Hall Ikura? Any good? Seems like it's nice but don t like the MDF platter. I prefer acrylic. What do you think of this bid?
