Bent a 1200 dollar stylus :(

The wife told me to clean and dust my stereo. I recently changed from a Sumiko to a Dynvector stylus. I always put the stylus guard on when I dust the turntable. The Dynavector has one of the worst stylus guards ever. It does not slide on, you have to flex it open or force it on. In a careless moment, my hand slipped and the stylus guard swiped the stylus and bent it.

AMATEUR AMATEUR AMATEUR mistake!

It resulted in a 10 degree-ish bend to the left. Man, I was bummed.

Thought about it, did some research, and went to town with some dental picks, old watchmaker tools, a bunch of magnifiers and loupe. Using the tip of a micro screwdriver to support the coil end, I pushed the stylus arm straight with a flat blade dental pick. Then, I twisted the arm with a micro pliers. Talk about needing a steady hand!

Straightened it. Listening to it right now, and I don't think the sound was affected. If I had two, I'd do some ABX testing, but all I have is one. I'll be listening to it for a few days to see if I need to replace it

Gonna call Dynavector for repair. If they can't do anything to it, it goes in the trash. Man, I'm gonna miss that thing.

Cart repairs aren't that hard. There must be someone in NA that does it. If not a small package to Tivoli HiFi in Melbourne Australia and they will be able to repair it.

Nearly the same happened to me thanks to my housekeeper with her feather duster to my brand new Grasshopper back in the 90s just after I had told her to stay away from the turntable. Pulled the stylus / cantilever right out of the cart.

Poof gone. And in the 90s $5k was a lot of money.

If it sounds all right (as stated above) why are you considering further repair or tossing it?

there is a low frequency surface noise that it produces. listened to a few different albums and its there. clearly heard between songs, and just under the main sound level when into a track. when an album ends, and its just hitting that infinity loop, it now sounds someone is hitting a desk real hard.

I still kept my housekeeper, but I was lucky to be able to lock the main room that had the BFD audio equipment in it, and I cleaned that one myself. The two doors up there on the left.

Dynavector says no fixie on cart under the XX2 model. Theyre giving 20% off list trade in.

Gonna keep the cart until I have finished mourning, then buy a new one, in about 6 months

End of story.

Ouch. Something like this is one of my reservations about going to that level even if/when it becomes financially feasible for me. I am actually trying to determine whether or not I may have bent my $99 stylus's cantilever by brushing it too hard, and even that hurts, but I can't imagine $1200... hope you are able to work something out!

As for listening to the wife, you are absolutely right to not blame her cleaning direction for this. You should clean your gear, anyway, and she isn't the one who clumsily bent the thing. I think one lesson might be that if a stylus has a fussy guard like that, maybe it's better to just be extremely careful with the cleaning and leave the guard off?

IMO, you should have "cleaned" your rig before installing a new $1200 cartridge.
EDIT: Which I just learned you only paid $350 used.

So you can imagine what I felt like when it was $5,000 sacrificed to a feather duster. And that was mid 90s dollars so that hurt having a two week old Grasshopper destroyed. I've cleaned my own house ever since. Even caprpet cleaning I do myself. But I'll get to the age when it will be me next time.

Update - spoke with Dynavector and they told me no fixie. Referred to dealer for 20% off exchange. I reached out and negotiated, saying I am trying to afford the replacement.

I was offered 800 bucks for an exchange. Going into my garage saturday and selling everything I can on Craigslist to raise funds

Found this guy and he seems legit. https://vasnyinc.com/ From my own experience trying to fix the cartridge, its not that difficult, but I do not have knowledge of technique and what to achieve for a proper fix. Im going to take a chance and have it repaired.

Thank you. I called Steve back, and told him, besides internet reviews, I have received a personal recommendation, yours. Having that made me rethink some of his suggestions. I approved some mods he suggested beyond the repair He's putting on a different cut diamond stylus to increase detail among others
