Spirit is the debut album by rock band Spirit, released in 1968.

The experimental album was commercially successful, spending more than six months on the Billboard album charts.

The guitar riff that occurs about :43 into "Taurus" is said to have influenced Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page in 'composing' his famous intro to "Stairway to Heaven". Led Zeppelin opened for Spirit on an American tour in 1968.

Los Angeles district judge Gary Klausner ruled that there were enough similarities between the song and the instrumental for a jury to decide the claim. On 23 June 2016, the jury ruled that the similarities between the songs did not amount to copyright infringement.

Quote:
Flag is the ninth studio album by American singer-songwriter James Taylor, released in 1979.

The album was not particularly well received, but it did provide a hit in Taylor's cover version of the Gerry Goffin–Carole King composition "Up on the Roof". It included songs from Taylor's music score to Studs Terkel and Stephen Schwartz's Broadway musical, Working ("Millworker", "Brother Trucker"). On the 12 May 1979 episode of Saturday Night Live, Taylor was the musical guest, and performed three songs from the album, "Up on the Roof", "Millworker", and "Johnnie Comes Back".

The signal flag that makes up the cover of the album is "O (Oscar)", standing for "man overboard".

Carly Simon — vocals
Graham Nash — vocals
Alex Taylor — backing vocals
David Sanborn — saxophone

1979 Rolling Stone review:
Though Flag probably won't be the hit that JT was, on its own uncompromising terms, it's every bit as impressive. Maybe more so. Taylor's new songs are exquisitely crafted, and their pain is so brilliantly understated that you can't dismiss the bleakness as mere self-pity.

James Taylor's beautiful version of Gerry Goffin and Carole King's "Up on the Roof" is also the saddest ever recorded. His reedy, throbbing twang transforms this big-city anthem of freedom and mystical escape into a ravaged recollection of better days. A churning, modal version of the Beatles' "Day Tripper" (with a disco edge to it) finds the singer keening the chorus in an eerie, Sylvester-like falsetto that turns wit into shrill sarcasm.

With Bob Dylan in decline, James Taylor has risen to become the foremost vocal exponent of Appalachian folk and Southern blues classicism. No one else can make the plainest phrase ring with so much grit, tenderness and irony.
40th Anniversary of this album.

Autographed.

Quote:
Goths (Special Edition) is the sixteenth studio album by the Mountain Goats, released in 2017.

The band has stated that Goths was inspired by an adolescence listening to The Cure, Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and Joy Division, as well as hearing songs on the Californian radio station KROQ-FM.

Singer John Darnielle wrote lyrics with references to some of his favorite bands. On "Abandoned Flesh", they sing: The Cure's Robert Smith may be "secure at his villa in France" and Siouxsie Sioux "had enough hits to keep the bills paid", "Outside it’s 92 degrees and KROQ is playing Siouxsie and the Banshees"; "92°" being the title of a Siouxsie song from the album Tinderbox. The track "Andrew Eldritch Is Moving Back to Leeds" is a description of the Sisters of Mercy frontman. "Rain in Soho" includes the line "There’s a club where you’d like to go You could meet someone who’s lost like you" an allusion to The Smiths, "How Soon is Now?". The lyrics have been described as a mix of "wry insight and black humour". Musically, the songs have been compared to artists such as Nick Cave, Prefab Sprout, and New Order.

Goths is the first Mountain Goats album not to feature any guitars, excluding bass guitar. Bassist Peter Hughes described the album's theme as goth, covering the bands that "never made it out of Fender's Ballroom, the Gene Loves Jezebels of the world—the ones whose gothic paths were overtaken by the realities of life, or of its opposite."

The special edition comes with an additional 12" record featuring four ambient non-album tracks.

Death Wish II is a soundtrack album by Jimmy Page, released in 1982.

Page was asked by his London neighbor, movie director Michael Winner, to record a soundtrack for the film, which starred Charles Bronson. Page was given a deadline of a few weeks to write and record the album at his personal studio.

Director Michael Winner said:
I'd lived next door to Jimmy for many years. It was a very bad time for him – the drummer (John Bonham of Led Zeppelin) had died, and he was in a very inactive period. (Led Zeppelin manager) Peter Grant and I made arrangements for Jimmy to do the Death Wish II score, for which he wasn't actually paid, because Grant wanted to restore Jimmy back to creativity. Jimmy rang the doorbell, and I thought if the wind blew he'd fall over. He saw the film, we spotted where the music was to go, and then he said to me "I'm going to my studio. I don't want you anywhere near me, I'm going to do it all on my own." My editing staff said this is bloody dangerous! Anyway, we gave him the film, we gave him the timings, and he did it all on his own. Everything hit the button totally! I've never seen a more professional score in my life.
The soundtrack features Dave Mattacks from Fairport Convention, former Pretty Things keyboards player Gordon Edwards, and veteran singer Chris Farlowe, who also later appeared on Page's 1988 solo album Outrider. Page used a Roland guitar synthesizer on a number of the tracks. Tracks from this album were later reused by Winner for Death Wish III.

Quote:
These Foolish Things is the debut solo studio album by Bryan Ferry, released in 1973.

It was a commercial and critical success. Ferry at the time was still Roxy Music's lead vocalist, but the album is considered to be a departure from Roxy Music's sound because it consists entirely of cover versions. Most of the tracks on the album were personal favorites of Ferry's, and spanned several decades from 1930s standards such as the title track through 1950s Elvis Presley to Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones.

AllMusic critic Ned Raggett wrote, "Throughout Ferry's instantly recognizable croon carries everything to a tee, and the overall mood is playful and celebratory. Wrapping up with a grand take on "These Foolish Things" itself, this album is one of the best of its kind by any artist."

Robert Christgau wrote of the album "Ferry both undercuts the inflated idealism of the original and reaffirms its essential power. Along the way, he also establishes "It's My Party" as a protest song. And just in case we're getting any highfalutin ideas, the title track reminds us that pop is only, well, foolish things, many of which predate not only Andy Warhol but rock and roll itself."

Rolling Stone's Album Guide:
Ferry views pop as a kind of continuum, extending through all sorts of Tin Pan Alley and Brill Building craftsmanship and incorporating visions as radical as Dylan's and as banal as Gore's. Within such a sensibility discerning what deserves to be dismissed as "trash" and what deserves elevation as "art" is not a simple problem. And such designations are so often determined by context that their order can be reversed almost at will. By altering tempos and singing every song with the deadpan emotional blankness he largely avoids with Roxy, Ferry exposes these issues as effectively as any pop singer in history.
