Question Suggestions for phono/digital setup?

Hi Folks,

So I am finally on the road to building my first dedicated area and setup for music. I have a few minor components coming over from my home theater - a Pro-Ject Carbon S2 and a MoFi phono amp. I'd love some input on options to support both phono and streaming/network digital sources. After a little research and a chat with a local dealer I was looking at some Dynaudio X38s and a Cambridge Audio 851A/851N combo for Amp/Digital duty. I think buying separates and making sure that with a higher end speaker I pair it with a setup that will keep up was my concern (I know there is some debate on the X38s and powering them properly). Is there something I am missing or over/under buying when it comes to this setup? Network plan is to have a QNAS for local HQ digital storage and Spotify to stream from.

Thanks!
Stu

PS - I listen to mostly rock (Rush, Pink Floyd, ELO, Yes, Genesis, etc..)

What is your working budget for this project? It seems pretty high.

You would not necessarily need to go as far as the Cambridge 851N Network Player. Look at the Cambridge CXN Network Player for about half the money.

If you are worried about the Speaker requiring significant power, then perhaps -

ROTEL RA-1592 Integrated with DAC, 200w/ch - US$2499 -

Considerably more than the Cambridge 851A Integrated - $1499 -

https://www.crutchfield.com/shopsear...idge_851A.html

Another options is the Rotel RA-1572 which is similar to the RA-1592 but instead has 120w/ch -

Rotel RA-1572 Integrated, DAC, 120w/ch - $1699 -

$_899 = Cambridge CXN Network Player
$2499 = Rotel RA-1592 Integrated, 200w/ch
-----------------------------------
$3398 = Total

$_899 = Cambridge CXN Network Player
$1699 = Rotel RA-1572 Integrated, 120w/ch
----------------------------------
$2598 = Total

$1499 = Cambridge 851N Network Player
$1499 = Cambridge 851A Integrated, 120w/ch
--------------------------------------
$2998 = Total

If you want highly rated quality streaming at a much more attractive price then -

Bluesound Node-2i - $499 -

https://www.crutchfield.com/shopsear...d_node_2i.html

That looks a lot less like typical audio equipment, but I think if you search around you will find it is highly rated.

I believe Bluesound are ROON ready, should you choose to use that software.

The Bluesound is $400 less than the Cambridge CXN, and $1000 less than the Cambridge 851N.

There is also the Bluesound Vault-2i which has a built in CD Player for Ripping CD, and a built in Hard Drive capable of storing thousands of Albums.

Bluesound Vault 2i, CD, 2TB-HD - $1199 -

https://www.crutchfield.com/shopsear..._vault_2i.html

That at least give you a range of options.

Thanks for all the great info Steve - and I think you nailed it on the head - went back to the store and spent some time talking about the 851n/CXN v2 and ended up walking out with the CXN knowing that in my case the savings could be better spent on the amp and speakers down the road. Next step is to get my QNAP up and running so I can have a rip-fest this weekend!
