Dragonfly DACs

Anyone using one of the Dragonfly Dacs from phone or computer into a home audio system?

Yep.

I owned the Black and upgraded to the Red last year and heard a major improvement.

I now own the Cobalt and heard another improvement but have a good use for the Red.

Of note is power usage is down quite a bit with the Cobalt so you can now just plug it directly into an iOS device with the appropriate adapter and not have it reduce battery life dramatically.

At this price point though, wouldn't one be better off with something like Schiit Modi?

@happycamper820, I have had the Red for a few years, and love it. I have tit plugged into the computer, and it does make a difference. I had an Emotiva DAC, but the Dragonfly(IMHO) was just all around better with sound quality.

I was a bit confused and thought these devices were primarily for headphones. Receivers and integrated amps already have DACs so it's like double DAC. But it still has me intrigued so I'm glad others have noticed a difference and since my primary audio source is my android phone with the music I download and store on the phone I'm definitely interested.

I started using the Red a couple of years ago with my old desktop and it made a very nice improvement over the onboard USB DAC on my previous integrated amp. Switched to the Cobalt on my Mac mini and I find the sound preferable to the Red as it seems a bit more resolute while being less strident. Rarely use headphones these days, but the Red does a great job driving the few fairs of headphones I have (Sony MDR-Z7, Audioquest Nighthawk, Shinola Canfield Pro IEM). But yeah, the Cobalt is providing me with great sound on my desktop and handles switching between pretty much every audio format with ease (my Mac mini is set as a Roon core using my own ripped library, plus Qobuz and Tidal along with Spotify).

I sent an email to Audioquest asking about he rattle between the casing and the parts inside since there are numerous reviews and videos on the internet citing the quality control issue. They replied saying it affected a small number of units and it has been corrected. Now how long do you have wait for all the bad units to be purchased out of circulation?

So they wouldn't fix it for you if you happened to get one of those rattlers?

If you ended up with one of those Cobalt rattlers you could probably fix it yourself if it really bothered you. It's just a USB stick that rattles inside its plastic casing. The rattle doesn't affect anything but I'm of the opinion, like all the other that have voiced their complaints in their reviews of the Cobalt, that a $300 USB stick should not rattle.

I currently have the Dragonfly Red and am pleased with its performance. I'm using a purely analog integrated amp however, so it made sense to have this along with a cheap Atom-powered laptop.

No. I have an older model atom laptop. Cost about $160 on sale. The DF Red was $199 new and was added later. Not sure what's funny. Thanks for the useless reply.

It is kind of odd that they are similar in price.
