Amazon today launches Amazon Music HD lossless streaming service!

I have been an Amazon Music Unlimited member for some time, but I just signed up for this service and so far have only listened on my laptop via its tiny speakers, but it sounds very clean and nice. I have been listening through my audio system via a long analog interconnect to the AUX input on my AVR. I figured that with Amazon's only mp3 quality, it probably would not make that much difference by using a digital USB cable from the laptop to the audio system. But with the advent of Amazon's high res streaming capability, would I be correct to assume that I would now get better sound quality via a USB cable from the laptop to either my AVR or my PS Audio Stellar Gain pre-amp/DAC? Thanks for any tips! I did also post this in the "what did you do today" thread, but I think it deserves its own thread.

Try 'em all. See how it sounds.
Report back with your testing.

I've read a lot of complaints about the usability Amazon's app, I used Prime streaming a bit before I started Tidal but it was mostly via Sonos so I was using that front end.

@mtrot maybe try out a cheap DAC like the JDS OL. There's a bunch of good ones in the sub-$150 range.

Thanks, I do have a PS Audio Stellar Gain DAC/Pre-amp, so I will try that out. I've been using Prime streaming on both my Galaxy S8+ and my laptop with no problems.

I was hoping that when Amazon's lossless music streaming arrived, they would do so with a new, updated, improved MUsic App for iPhone & Android.

Their current app is clumsy, nonintuitive re: "workflow", with too many annoying quirks/bugs.

Been a Prime Music $7.99/mo sub for about a year now.

Impressed with their library & selection in general, though could always be better (ie everything in every genre ever put to tape/vinyl/CD).

Wait and see for me re: the lossless tier. I have been highly impressed with the audio quality of their lossy tier. I don't believe they use MP3 for lossy streams, but either AAC or their own proprietary version of MP4/AAC to maximize sound quality and minimize bitrate.

This brings up a question, at least for me. When using Amazon Music HD on my Android phone(Galaxy S8+) in the car, would I get better sound via Bluetooth or with a 3.5mm cable into the AUX input?

I'll definitely give it try since my primary music source is Amazon music files stored on my phone. I'm assuming any home receiver/amp has a built in DAC capable of handling these files right?

How do I know if I need an external DAC?
If your device has a built-in DAC that does not support HD/Ultra HD audio, then you need an external DAC when connecting your player to your headphones or speakers to listen in HD/Ultra HD.

In order to play Ultra HD, the external DAC at a minimum must be capable of processing files with a bit depth of 24-bit and sample rates of at least 44.1 kHz. Check the DAC specifications to ensure it can play higher sample rates available with Ultra HD (48 kHz, 96 kHz, 192 kHz).

On iOS, disable the Alexa Wake Word feature in Settings to ensure playback through your DAC at the highest resolution.

At this time, external DACs are not supported on Android.

Trying to understand the line in bold letters since my android phone hooked up to home receiver is my primary music source.

Ahh, so I would have to play this HD content via my laptop, not my Galaxy S8+, right? Unless I connect with an analog interconnect from the phone, but then I would be limited to the quality of the DAC in my Android phone.

Just signed up for 3 month trial to check it out. The UI is definitely a step below Tidal or Spotify but music quality seems really good. There are some albums that are not available in CD quality (example would be Raising Sand album by Plant and Strauss) but I'm sure they are transitioning and may be available in higher quality soon. But at $12.99 for individual and $19.99 for family this seems worth it. I will probably cancel my Tidal sub after my 3 months are out but having the 3 month trial is great to test it out and make sure I really want to switch over....

So if my primary music source is an Android phone does that mean I won't have much benefit upgrading to Amazon Music HD?

This 90-day free trial seems a little misleading as it's not really free unless you're already paying for Amazon Unlimited Music. I just use the free Amazon Music that comes with Prime and it told me it will start charging me $7.99 per month which is the cost of the Unlimited subscription and in 90 days it will begin charging me $12.99.

Not a big fan of Amazon trying to take over. However, Tidal is more expensive and doesn't work well for me (dropouts with just the $10 tier on desktop). I have a Dragonfly DAC but my phone is not compatible with the Dragon Tail USB extender.

I signed up for the HD service and started to spot check my music library and so far I have not been able to find a single song in my library that is in HD or Ultra HD. They all say SD and when I click on the SD it says this song is not available in HD or Ultra HD. I'm an older guy so my library consists of a lot of music from the 70s, 80, not too much after 2000. I hope this is some kind of update issue but if my entire library is not available in HD what's the point. Hard to imagine that out of 50M songs availabe in HD I picked 200 songs that are not in that 50M. So far this is disappointing.

Anyone else find songs in HD? If so can you list a song that you know for sure is in HD so that I can add it to my library so that I know this is not some kind of problem with my account.

I think this might be an android issue. When I check on the computer it says I need to download a new app to listen to HD on the computer. I'll try later when I get on my home computer.

I just checked the Doobie Brothers and The Eagles, and it looks like all their albums are in HD/UHD.

I deleted my entire library of 200+ song and am starting over. Maybe it just needed some kind of update and my current library would have changed to the HD versions if available. But when I re-download they are HD and Ultra HD. Lot of work but I guess it's okay now.

Is there any way to see what can be downloaded without starting a free trial? I don't want a service that doesn't offer the Beatles nor Led Zep. I don't need HD, SD is good enough for mortal ears.

For car/mobile use, I question the utility of the lossless service, since all BT is lossy encoded for wireless transmission anyways, and if you use a wire from your phone, you are relying on the DAC/headphone amp/preamp in the phone, which may be below audiophile (Lossless) standards anyways.

I see these lossless services an option for dedicated 2ch audiophile rigs at home and maybe whole-house audio, assuming your endpoints are lossless-grade.

Oh, I know what was going on for you. Yes, when I pull up My Music and go to an album that is already in My Music, the track list does not show the HD/Ultra HD icon. But, above and to the right of the track list, there are two options: My Music, and Unlimited. When I click Unlimited, I get the same album, but then it shows the HD/Ultra HD icons. So, I think you are right that if you want to see those icons in My Music, they will have to be re-added to My Music. I haven't really worried about that, as I can just click on Unlimited.

Thanks, makes sense. But I did try out Amazon lossless music with my Samsung Galaxy S8+ with my AVR by connecting it via the analog cable. The S8+ indicated that it was playing lossless and it sounded pretty dang good. So, in the car, I think I will use the cable to the AUX input.

Unlimited - HD vs non-HD pricing

Interesting.
I may try it out.
I currently have Spotify Family and Qobuz.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/dmusic/promotions/PrimeMusic

Amazon HD Music
$13/mon individual - $10.75/mon if $129/yr
$20/mon family - up to 6 members - $16.58/mon if $199/yr

Non-HD Amazon Unlimited
$8/mon
$15/mon family

I signed up for trial and tried playing via HEOS on my Denon x4300h AVR with a wired ethernet connection. It did indicate it was playing higher quality FLAC but would stall every 2 seconds so was unplayable. I can send via airplay but not sure I'm getting full quality that way. Anyone try via HEOS on a Denon AVR with success?

Airplay is always 16/44 so not much point in routing high resolution through it.

Right that's what I was implying. It will support the HD tier but not the ultra HD tier.
