2.1 audio help

My daughter wants to listen to music loud and with a lot of bass. She uses Bluetooth from her phone to connect to the device. We have a harman kardon onyx studio 4 and she initially wanted something like that but much more powerful. We went to Best Buy and put a Sony GTKXB90 in the cart on sale for $299 with LEDS and all types of crap that don't add to sound quality. We kept shopping and came onto the pioneer, klipsch, sony isle where they had separate receivers... speakers... subs and listened to them. At this point we knew what we had in the cart was garbage in comparison. We talked to the audio specialist and he kept talking about making sure to get good speakers wires and i knew he didn't know anything at that point.

I started to think about some of the audio equipment I have in the basement from years ago when I was into home theater and that I could re-purpose some of it to get a better product than buying new.

I have a pair of av123 rocket 450s. They aren't the greatest but probably sound as good as anything for $150 or so nowadays.
I also have an elemental designs 15" powered subwoofer i think it's called an a5-350 but could be wrong.

My questions are these.

1. Should i purchase a cheap 2.0 receiver and hook this stuff up ?
2. Should i purchase a cheap 5.1 receiver and hook this stuff up ?
3. Which of option 1 or 2 could i crank the bass up higher ?
4. Is there an entirely different option i'm missing? I'd like to be @ $200 for the receiver with bluetooth audio playback only to power my old speakers.

Thanks and i know it would be easy to go completely off track with the ridiculous end game but it is what it is... she wants loud and bass.

1. Get an inexpensive A/V receiver (AVR) that will have a subwoofer output and do bass management. A Denon AVR-S650H, currently $280 at bestbuy.com, will do nicely.

2. Hook up the speakers and sub, run the receiver's auto-EQ program (Audyssey) and then tweak if/as desired. (See the "how to" link in my signature, below.)

3. Enjoy!

Your daughter will be very lucky to end up with a system comprising those speakers and that sub!

Thanks for the quick response! Anything for $200 that would do the job ?

BestBuy has a couple of Sony AVRs that'll work:
- STRDH590 for $180; and
- STRDH790 for $200.

If you're OK with factory-refurb, accessories4less.com has:
- a Denon AVR-S540BT for $180, shipped; and
- a Yamaha RX-V383 for $190 + shipping.

-- Edit --
My pick would be the Denon AVR-S700W for $200 at BB.com.

Perfect.... and i used to regular the forum 8+ years ago and remember your name. I'm cool with factory refurbs.

Which of the 4 you list is the one you would purchase if you were to be in my uncomfortable shoes of gifting my daughter loud and bass for music played via Bluetooth off of an iPhone?

Appreciated.

I'd probably start with the cheapest (but still half-decent) option that should work and the one that's easiest to return & replace if it doesn't: The Sony STR-DH590 for $180 at BB.com.

-- Edit --
Note: Although the Sony has Bluetooth, it appears not to have Wifi connectivity. If you think that that might be a useful feature to have, I'd go with the Denon AVR-S700W.

I ended up checking it out on amazon and getting this model --- Sony STR-DH790 7.2-ch AV Receiver, 4K HDR, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, dts:X, with Bluetooth for $20 bucks more.

Thanks for steering me straight Eljay !

Happy to help.

(Final note, FWIW: I checked the STR-DH790's product page and owner's manual and it doesn't seem to have Wifi connectivity either (Bluetooth only).)

All good I can't even imagine why we would need to hook it up to wifi

Thanks!

For music only? Unless you are doing room correction or something that requires and AVR, I would get a 2-channel receiver rather than an AVR. For music only, I prefer driving the sub with speaker-level rather than line-level (it blends better with the mains because both sub and mains see the same signal <- not everyone agrees with that (most who don't agree haven't tried it )).

I have no experience with this particular unit, but something like this seems like it would work nicely:

Second this over the s202 I recommended -- although she only needs Bluetooth, Bluetooth has it's limits and she would benefit from having WiFi apps longer term (probably near term also).
