Exclamation Axpona 2020

Just made reservations so I guess it's time to start my annual AXPONA review thread for April 17-19, 2020.

Learned the hard way to make reservations early before prices double at some point in February. I'm going up Thursday so my hearing is rested for the start of the show on Friday AM. I'll be there the entire show and will live blog as much as possible.

I know a little early to ask this question, but who all is going?

I'll try to get together a meetup on Friday night at what's probably the best pizza I've ever had at Lou Malnati's Pizzeria, which is a few blocks away.

There's also Moretti's Ristorante & Pizzeria, which is pretty decent in the east end of the parking lot.

@imagic Mark, do you know yet whether you're coming to the show this year.

I got great rates at the Springhill Suites just on the block south of the freeway of $114 per night, but they almost double in February. It's an easy walk of about a half mile or less over to the show to avoid the parking nightmare at the convention center.

By far, this is the best Chicago deep dish pizza in town (in my opinion). Even if you don't like deep dish their "thin" crust is fantastic as well.

I might make it up that way as it'd be a good excuse to visit relatives and have a free bed to sleep in. Depends upon the weather I suppose as we'd be driving.

That's probably the best pizza I've ever had.

Chances are pretty good that we won't have the Sunday snowstorm happen two years in a row. At least by driving, I can get out of there as opposed to all night in the airport as so many had to do.

Anything under 500 miles and I drive.

I will let you know if I end up going. Wife is now saying that spring break might be better for a trip there, so I may miss Axpona by a week or two. We will see.

Chicago is always so dicey that time of the year so weather will play a role in when that road trip actually happens.

You haven't been to one in new location, have you? I think you'll like it.

I'll be up there Thursday night with cataract fixed with my HD lens so I can live blog a lil easier than the last couple of years.

Hopefully no big ass snow storm on Sunday right when it's about time for everyone to leave.

ANother vote for Malnati's.

There are at least 3 "Chicago style" chains around Chicago area (Giordanos, Malnatis, Ginos East), and I've tried them all. That light pastry style Malnati crust is tough to beat.

Amazingly, the frozen Malnati's pies they sell at takeout taste the same and come out like the restaurant at home. I plan to buy several and bring a cooler for them for the 4hr drive home

Lou's is good but sometime you should try out Gino's east, get the sausage patty pizza!!! And if you like BBQ Smouqe on Polaski is really really good! I travel a lot for work and when I'm in the windy city those are two must stop locations!!!

Tried Gino's East last fall, I didn't like the heaviness and excessive cornmeal in the crust (I know that a cornmeal crust is their schtick)

Giordano's is good, but heavier and thicker than Malnati's.

Interesting that Detroit Style pizza (Buddy's and similar square deep dish) is an "officially" recognized pizza style now, ie Chicago, Detroit, and New York syles. While in New York ~ 2years ago, walking to the Empire State Bldg (Never visited), saw a "Detroit Pizza Co" restaurant along the way, with the byline "Detroit Style deep dish"- and I go out of my way to find good NY style around the D

My girl and I should be there Friday and Saturday.

Will be a first time at the new location. What is the parking nightmare that you are talking about, @Scotth3886 ?

I like Gino's East but I still think Malnati's is better.

They also closed the Gino's that was close to my in-laws and it's not worth it to drive to their other locations when Malnati's is the better pie (IMO).

Scott...how would I need to hook you up to bring me back a couple of frozen Malnati's if I cannot make it? lol

The lot at the convention center gets super full if you're not over there by 9:00 or 9:30am. Best to get up early and get moving. Lots to see and hear and it's pretty easy to blow all three days.

I'd probably take a year or two to meet up with you given how many times I've invited you over here.

Best to figure how to go to the show. Chicago pizza just isn't the same when consumed in C-Bus.

Given that some will be flying in, the meetup pizza joint needs to somewhat close to convention center and HO-tels. Even Lou's is a five minute drive, but well worth it.

You'll be so plugged up that you won't be able to fart for days. You'll need a plunger to fix it.

Not wise to do concerning HO-tel reservations. Best to do this month before prices double sometime in February. Make sure they're cancelable in case you back out.

Absolutely true. The venue is really good but there are not enough parking spaces. They really need off site parking and shuttles.

2 years ago (AXPONA 2018) they did have parking across the road from the venue with a shuttle

I'm staying at the Springhill Suites right on the south side of the freeway so I can easily walk if I need to.

If we do a meetup at Lou's on Friday night, I'll need to walk Saturday morning so I can 'ventilate' a bit on the way there.

(Don't worry, it's just the world's greatest servo controlled subwoofer circa 1944)

Stopped by Lou Malnati's on the way out from AXPONA 2018 and bought this pizza. Man, it's good pizzza. Moretti's was also very good.

That's where I stayed in 2018, very nice. If I attend this year, that's where I'll probably stay. I enjoyed hanging around with you guys in 2018. After attending RMAF last September, it looks like AXPONA is now the show to attend, if you can only make one show. RMAF was fun, and the Gaylord is a fantastic resort, but there were too many prior exhibitors who eschewed RMAF last year because they jacked up the rental prices because of being in the new venue.

Is there a trick in getting that rate? Best I seem to be able to do is $135...$155 w/tax & fees

All men dream: but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dreams with open eyes, to make it possible.

It's probably heading up already. That's still a great price compared to what it will be in a couple of weeks.
