Amp for two channel

with a budget of $7gs? I have B & W 702 s2 and can get a 1 year old demo NU-VISTA 800 for around my budget. Currently using a Classe' CA-200 that started to squeal after shutdown and having it looked at. Thanks

Possibly bad electrolytic power supply caps in the older Classe'.

I vote no on the new demo NU-VISTA. Fix the Classe' amp then keep it. Save your money.

I agree, try to fix the Classe. I will say, though, that your budget, or close to it, should buy a Pass X250.8 demo at Reno HiFi. A lovely amplifier, if you can deal with the 400w of heat at idle.

Do you know how well it pairs with the 702 s2's? Lovely sounds good

My local dealer sells B&W and they match up really well w/Luxman gear. The 702's W/a Luxman M700 U power amp is really impressive. Also a bit less than your Budget the Bryston 4B3. New w/a 20 year warranty.

Sorry, no, I paired it only with my Janszen Valentina (a/k/a zA2.1) hybrid electrostatics. For what it's worth, the Janszens are quite neutral and low in distortion, and the room is treated acoustically.

But Reno let me return it, less only the freight, if I didn't like it. (Well, I returned it not because I didn't like it, but because the heat was too much in my rather tightly sealed room.) Might be worth a try....

Sell the 702s, get the Classe fixed, and add your amp budget into better speakers.

Is this truly my best option? I really don't want sell stuff because it's a hassle. I listened to the Nu-Vista 800 with the 702's and was very pleased with the speakers. Just thought to ask if a better amp for the money was thought of here.

Why does this mean that the speakers need to go?

I also spoke with Mark at Reno who claimed the 250.8 paired well with the 702 s2's. I know he's selling product but come on.

As stated(not very well lol)I like my speakers and they sound fine with the Classe and they sounded better with the nu-vista.

My mad money is ok and thought a nicer amp would be slick for the time I have left in life. I can live with what I have but I don't need to.....

If you like your speakers, keep them. But that ridiculously over priced NU-VISTA amp isn't making them sound any better. You're experiencing a placebo effect.

I don't know what you hear, but I know why you think you hear differences in power amps. Cognitive Bias is a fact. Comparing audio components with your eyes open creates errors.

If you have $7k to spend and want an actual improvement in SQ, speakers and/or room treatments are the way to go, not an amplifier.
If you like your speakers, fix the amp and pocket the difference.

Remember, the saleshack is trying to make a sale; they're not your friend.

The differences between decent modern SS amps is trivial. OOP is absolutely right about cognitive bias.

No, we don't know what you hear just trying to pass on some fundamental knowledge about human perception and how unreliable it can be just when you want accuracy of the perception.

In a similar price range as the NuVista, you might also want to take a listen to the Hegel H590 (300 @8 and 590 @4). Or at half the price, the Hegel H390 (250 @8 and 490 @4). I also like the NuVista and not sure which of the two I'd buy. Yes, I have a Hegel with ESLs.

There is a subset of people in here that seem to dislike anything that costs more than $1000-$1500. They will also try and tell you that you're not hearing what you think you're hearing. They may be right, they may be wrong. But if you enjoy it, that's all that matters. It's your money.

And another (not cheap) possibility might be the VAC integrated.

http://www.vac-amps.com/pages/IntegratedAmps.html

Not so much the new 450IQ as that's in the $153,000 range, IIRC, but the Sigma 170i tube integrated is around $12k so much more affordable.

There are so many possibilities for high end integrateds that it might be worth your time to go to AXPONA in April and check most of them out. VAC's Kevin Hayes is there the entire time and the first person I go see on Friday morning.

The big VAC integrated is huge as can be see here to the left of Damon Von Schweikert. The speaker cable are $70,000 per pair, biwired. Too rich for my blood because I did way too much of this 25 years ago or so (in 1995 dollars) and didn't do a very good job of saving so I'm interested, but on the sidelines.

That NU-VISTA amp costs way more than $1500 and doesn't make your music sound any better than a modestly priced receiver. Save your money.

He's just trying to save us money! lol.

Regardless of cognitive bias, I have amps that I like better than others due to sound and money is factor in none of those. I also have amps that I like due to aesthetic reasons (color, sexy VU meters, etc.) plus good sound. Whatever makes one happy...that's the point of this hobby in the first place.

https://www.theabsolutesound.com/art...erence-cables/

I'm jealous already.
Ahhhh, I like those cables and only $35k. When do those go on sale …. Black Friday?

Frankly, I heard that system, as know all of the parties involved so the VAC / Von Schwiekert room is my first stop on Friday morning. Hate to say it Damon, but I like the cheap $80,000 Ultra 9s better that the $200,000 Ultra 11s.

So there goes it ….. you really need not spend $200,000 on a pair of speakers when a measly $80,000 (lets not forget the $70,000 in speaker cables) spent on speakers will do fine.

I love how these discussions always seem to trend towards expensive cables, regardless of the equipment being discussed. The leaps and mental gymnastics to end up at that point always amuses me.

Believe me, I would like to try it, but the Hegel isn't shabby either. Hegel is a little cool sounding though, at least the H100 is. Maybe a touch too analytical for an extreme analytical speaker.

I would jump at the chance to try the Nu-Vista, but sometimes pieces like that are best left unheard. If I can't afford it, maybe keep it away.

Actually, a bunch of deals are closing right now so its more a question of priorities and I'd like a couple more cars before hangout and show season start.

The Nu-Vista is a beast. Be aware that this integrated gives out a lot of heat. Close to 100 degrees on the top plate and internally about 120 degrees. So you'll need to keep this in the open. Also there have been some problems w/transformer hum. Check it out before you buy. I'm to old to carry a big hunk of metal like that around. I keep my Luxman tube preamp and Bryston SST2 amp. My back thanks me. Good luck in your search.

After the many posts and advice by several of us back in November, it was good to learn (in the other thread) that you were able to tame the brightness issue and finally enjoy the B&Ws.

Your Classe CA-200 is an amp that I would keep for a very long time, even if repairing it properly will cost hundreds of dollars. Also, its warm sound quality synergizes well with the bright B&Ws.

While I might like the sonics of the Musical Fidelity Nu-Vista 800 integrated amp, I could not live with a unit that does not have a balance control. Another thought about the Nu-Vista 800 is that what might be most appealing to your ears about it is its tube front end.

If I were trying to improve the sonics of your system, my focus would be on trying a few new stereo preamplifiers. Ask local dealers, if possible, to loan you demos of tube and solid-state preamps they have on the shelves.

I can't than you enough for answering me with helpful advice. I was looking more at the Pass 250.8 over the Nu-Vista.

The Classe is going to cost about $400 to fix and I do like that amp. I had it running a pair of 703's for quite a few years. Just thought it was time to move on and upgrade my 2 channel. The repair tech said the same about trying a tube preamp. In my other thread it was suggested to look into a DAC...what's the pros and cons? thank you again

You may be better off fixing the Classe and adding the Anthem STR 2 preamp which has room correction and sub output options. Cost 4K for the preamp (new) and $400 to fix the amp. Excellent combo.
