TOPPING D90MQA AK4499 DSD512 Bluetooth5.0 USB DAC LDAC Full Balance Decoder

I see that these new DACs are available - TOPPING D90MQA AK4499 DSD512 Bluetooth5.0 USB DAC LDAC Full Balance Decoder
I am currently using a full balanced SMSL SU-8 with the 9038 ESS Sabre chips. Do you think that I could actually hear the difference between these DACs? Any improvement? I can not truthfully discern any improvement in sound between the SMSL unit and the 100 dollar DAC I used before, a PreSonus USB Audiobox recording and playback DAC meant for home recording with a 96K Cirrus chip. I do use balanced cables and a Re-Clocker along with Audirvana and powered monitors

Depends on how good your powered monitors are. PMC result6 level will likely reveal the difference.

Setup #1: GoldenEar Triton Reference --> Parasound Halo Integrated --> Allo DigiOne Signature, LG OLED C7P 65
Setup #2: Elac Debut B6.2 --> Akitika GT-102 --> ??

I didn't know AKM had produced the 4499. The last I looked the 4497 was their flagship.

That said the actual implementation of the dac is as important as the dac itself. If you hear a difference, it's not from the dac, but how well or poorly it was implemented.

The Topping D90 is an intriguing device, even though my rack is full (and then some). It would be interesting to try -- I'd get the cheaper version, the one without MQA.

A flagship DAC with outstanding measured performance for $700 is pretty nice, especially as the user reports I've seen have been quite positive. I am really curious to hear it myself!

I am particulary interested in MQA as well as the AKM chips. Where did you see reviews-tests?

Audio Science Review did quite a thorough objective review. Then SoundNews.net had a glowing review.

The Steve Hoffman Forum has a long thread about the D90, but finally in the last few pages are comments by owners, who like it.

One has to take all that with a grain of salt, but they are enough so that the D90 would be on my list to audition.

Oh, I forgot to say, those who are considering paying the extra $100 for the MQA version might be interested in this article on MQA. The article summarizes the known facts (as opposed to sales pitches) and is quite well documented.

NOTE: Link corrected 26 May 2020.

Wow! Lot of Dac for the money and I've been wanting to try an out board for fun, this seems to tick all my boxes.

and there is the Gustard A22 with DUAL AKM4499 and MQA - MQA coming this month
a bit more kit at $1150

I am tempted for the Topping D90MQA and with the savings over the Gustard trying a Schiit Freya +

Thanks. The correct link is here, and I've also corrected it in the original post. I hope some find it useful.

Thanks for the updated link. I'm a member of computer audiophile, but It's been a few years since I went there. I remember the guy who wrote that article. It was a nice read and I agree with his conclusions.

The eonkyo music site has gone belly up. They were pushing MQA titles heavily. Almost all their catalogue was available in either high rez or MQA. Seems most people chose to go to HDtracks. Schiit audio had a paper posted one time on their site explaining why they never adopted MQA capability. If I remember they had the feeling it didn't add anything over a good hi rez download.
