ID'ing Laser for DENON DVD3930CI~~

Hi all. I disassembled my unit as far as i could, & stopped where there is a black cover protecting the laser assembly. There's way too many things not covered in ANY tutorial that explains how to get into where the laser sits, & an be either changed or ID'd for a part #. I need help, or a good tech. here in So. Florida. I would gladly pick up the parts, but I'm not even sure what I need. I already cleaned the laser, so that's out. Now I'm moving on & I need help.
Thanks everyone!
Kenny

Hi folks! I picked up a used DVD-2930 unit, and of course it doesn't read disks. What I find curious is it doesn't detect any single disc I tried, neither CD-Audio nor CD-data (MP3) nor DVD-video (don't have DVD-Audio or SACD discs yet). It spins the disc irregularly for a long time and then gives up. The universal advice seems to replace the pickup, do you think it will fix my case as well?

This is definitely not a case of a dead laser (both of them at once? Seems unlikely). I suspect the focusing mechanism may be at fault, is it a known issue with these devices?
I checked the CD and DVD laser current, it was only slightly larger than the original values (3300-3400 vs. 2800-2900). The CD has 120 hours and DVD has 77 hours on it. The unit is in good condition and I really don't understand why it could fail this way...
I re-adjusted the current to the displayed new values and reinitialized the player, to no avail, of course.

It is easy enough and cheap enough (less than $20) to replace the laser assembly, I would try it. In my experience the laser current is not particularly useful in diagnosing this problem.

Fair enough, thanks. Basically, I wanted to hear your opinion on the matter, whether you estimate the chance of success below 50% or above 50% for my particular symptoms. I suspect the lens isn't focusing properly, if that's the case then replacing the pickup is likely to resolve the problem, am I right?

I have a 3930 in excellent condition and was wondering if anyone could help me with a used value as I would like to sell it. I've barely used it in years and still have the original box and original accessories. Appreciate the help.

Just replaced the laser in mine. Not a tough job just use patience and had to buy a desoldering wick ($7) off of Amazon. Never had to go thru a reset. The player just worked. Player good as new. Now I have a decision to make keep the 3930CI or just go with the Oppo 203 for everything. Any recommendations? My AVR is a Denon 4306 FYI.

Most likely wil sell the unit unless there is a compelling reason to not use the Oppo 203. Thoughts???

Well I missed out on the Denon Link AK-DL1 interconnect when it came out. Now I see it it still being offered for a substantial premium even to its original lofty price. I just "upgraded" to a CAT 8 Ethernet Cable, Internet Network Cord, High Speed SSTP LAN Cable with Gold Plated RJ45 Connectors ($6). Wow, soundstage, dynamic range, etc., all much improved . Highly recommended!!!

Combined with the laser replacement no equal.

Just having a fun joke obviously. Still a good player for music. Keeping it for now and have integrated it back into my system.

I picked up a brand new 3930ci at a great price. I only plan on using it for DVD-Audio/Sacds going into a marantz av8805 via analog. Does this unit still Best an oppo 203 when using it for DVD- Audio/sacd only?

Currently running a CAT 6 cable, but I'm willing to give it a try.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Hard to say. I was able to compare in real time on my Oppo 203 Analog vs HDMI. Some SACD's and MOFI recordings sounded better to my ear either way. No clear winner. After I replaced the laser in the 3930 I played the same sources. I preferred the Denon, via Denon Link to my Denon 4306 AVR. I did a similar comparison back in the day on the Denon and preferred the Denon Link vs analog. Could be owners bias but for music I prefer the Denon via Denon Link to the 4306.
Music on the Denon , OPPO for all else. My speakers are a 7.1 Klipsch RF-35 series system FYI.

Maybe it is the Burr-Brown DAC's in the 4306 that match my ear and speakers????

Thanks for the response. The more research I do, the more confusing this gets. Now I am eye balling a Marantz ud 7007 as an audio universal player. I would run everything through hdmi in that scenario and would also be able to play blu-ray audio too, saving wear and tear on my main uhd player.

Just replaced the pick-up unit in my 2930 that wouldn't detect any disks (neither CD nor DVD). Now it plays CDs, and had no problem playing MP3 CD for 15 minutes, but there were a couple hiccups with a Redbook Audio CD.
Do I need to calibrate or adjust something? All I did was "Initialize" (Play + Skip Fwd on power on).

You can reset the laser current. It's a round about procedure. You will need the service manual. I don't believe its really necessary but the service manual says to do it.
For what its worth I've had some "hiccups" with certain redbook CDs. Don't know why.

For me this unit is obsolete because it will not send SACD multichannel sound through the HDMI. And the Denon link version III is long gone from newer receivers. Too bad. I wish there were some way to get the output from the denon link to a newer receiver but I am not aware of anything.

Thank you. I wanted to do that, opened the service manual, and didn't find instructions for this. Will look more carefully. Although the symptoms have disappeared, the same CD plays well now, so does a DVD-Video disc. I wonder why...

And thanks for mentioning this unit doesn't support SACD over HDMI, I didn't know that - it's a gift from my boss and I haven't read the manual yet. That's a pity, I wanted this player specifically for SACD and DVD-Audio playback, since its other functions are obsolete nowadays. So I would need an AV receiver with surround line-level inputs, those are mosly expensive models, and even then I don't know if all the DSP settings and room corrections are applied to analog inputs...

The player will pass SACD and DVDA stereo via HDMI. Also lossy DTS and Dolby. It's a great DVD player.
I wish there was a Denon link converter of some kind but I have not found one.

Had several chances now to compare the Oppo to the Denon via Denon Link on some of my better source music (Fleetwood Mac Rumours, Marvin Gay both DVD Audio, Allison Kraus & Union Station SACD, etc. I still prefer the Denon with Denon Link. Again, maybe it is the DAC's as well as DSD with the Denon Link. Different speakers and ears might yield a different result, obviously.
Happy camper again with a couple of spare lasers in hand.

Has anyone had to change another laser after the 1st replacement? If so how many years please? Any opinions on whether the laser goes bad without use (when I noticed mine I had not utilized the Denon for quite some time) or it just goes bad over time regardless of usage?
Thx

I haven’t tested it but I thought manual states that it doesn’t pass any SACD signal over hdmi?

That is correct no output over HDMI for SACD per the manual. Need Denon Link or analog out.
