In general I prefer my TiVo Roamio for Netflix and will use it or not for Amazon streaming depending upon what the UI is like (don't much like the current Roku one) and whether or not it can get the 1080p streams, which Rokus currently cannot.

I can't seem to find a good list of which devices support Amazon Instant in 1080p. My Apple TV 3 is my main streamer for season passes, Netflix, MLB.tv, and HBO Go. I prefer Netflix to Prime but I've had it for free two day shipping since before the videos were added. Essentially I only use it for content like Hannibal that isn't available from Netflix.

I have a Roku 2XD that doesn't cooperate with my Onkyo AVR. Something with that combination causes a weird purplish tint with Netflix for me so it was replaced with an Apple TV. It sounds like Roku doesn't get the 1080p streams anyways.

I also have a PS4 and Xbox One hooked up to my main TV. Are either of these devices known for better Amazon Instant performance? Are either of them confirmed for Amazon 1080p streams? Since Amazon isn't used as often I'm more worried about 1080p and 5.1 sound than UI. We have a great, long thread on the best Netflix streaming devices but there seems to be much less information out there about Amazon.

Amazon Fire TV gets 1080p streams. (but it's hit and miss depending on peak traffic) And Amazon will allow you to download your library videos to TiVo DVRs- and those D/Ls are 1080i.

As for the Roku 3, sometimes I feel it's 1080p, even though there is no way to quantify that.

Nothing against those devices but I already have an Apple TV and both new video game consoles hooked up to my TV. I'd rather not buy another device just for Amazon. I was hoping either the Xbox One or PS4 supported 1080p Amazon but if they don't I'll just stick with 720p.

Like I said, Roku doesn't work correctly with my Onkyo AVR. It tints everything purple. That was my original choice for a streaming device because it could handle all the services I regularly use (Netflix, MLB.tv, HBO Go, and Amazon Instant).

I used the Roku for a few weeks and then replaced it with the Apple TV and shifted my season passes over from Amazon to iTunes. I searched for fixes for a while and it turned out to be a widespread issue with Roku and my AVR. This was a few years ago before Fire TV existed or it would have been in the running. The Roku works great in another room but it's not an option on my main TV setup.

Thanks. So basically we don't have much information about anything but the Fire TV.

The vast majority of my Amazon downloads to TiVos over the last four years have been in 1080P24, not 1080i. But my downloads over the years were just about all TV shows too.

The Amazon app on my new Vizio P552ui-B2 is identical to the one on PS3; I thought that maybe they're standardizing on that interface, but then they didn't use it on Fire TV.

It works for movies too. I picked up X-Men: Days of Future Past ($10 this week) yesterday and unintentionally downloaded to both my TiVos. The Roamio has it in 1080p. The TiVo HD has in 1080i.

The Xbox One's player looks to be outputting 1080p, but unlike players on some other device (my TV and PS3 among them, as seen in this picture) there's no way to tell that it's 1080p. It outputs 5.1 sound for titles which have it as 5.1 channel LPCM which sounds great (of course it probably has aaronwt's most complained of problem).

The PS3 is supposed to do 1080p though I've never seen it get there, according to the indicator. My TV's Amazon app seems to start at 1080p for titles which have it.

In the PS3's Amazon app hit down-arrow or something and an info/scrub bar will pop up to show what resolution that you're getting--see the picture I linked to in my last post.

Cool. Xbox One it is then. I am going to check on the PS4 and see if I can get a similar resolution icon to pop up though. All else equal, I'll use the Xbox over PS4 because voice commands are pretty good and my harmony remote won't work with the PS4.

As for the LPCM, I have gotten used to that from the Xbox One taking over blu-ray duties from the PS3. I prefer bitstream because it's easier for me to look at the AVR screen and see what audio format I'm getting. It's pretty rare but some blu-rays like Batman Begins default to the standard Dolby Digital track instead of Dolby TrueHD. If you're using LPCM you might not notice that and think the movie just has underwhelming sound.

I do and it's not hard. It's just a couple button presses versus glancing at the Onkyo screen. I know it makes no difference in my HD 5.1 sound. I just like seeing the Onkyo show me what format the audio is in.

Every activity on my Harmony One has "Audio Info On" and "Audio Info Off" buttons. The information comes up as an overlay except for the TV Smart apps, for which I can read it from the screen of the AVR.

Regarding audio I noticed that my Yamaha receiver plays AAC audio imbalanced (stuff was too left channel) through HDMI from my Sonly BD player but switching to the SPDIF input it is balanced. Weird.

It says only HD, doesn't have the 1080p like in your pic....yet the avr still indicates its receiving at input 1080p (says RGB, 36 bit, 1920 x 1080p 60hz).....is that the tv somehow doing that via hdmi from a lesser input after upscaling?

I assume that your PS3 is connected to your TV through the AVR. The PS3 is likely upscaling the 720p to 1080p. If you don't see that "1080p HD" indicator you're not getting 1080p from Amazon. Others have reported that their PS3s displayed that indicator though mine never did. The Amazon app in my new TV does get the 1080p encodes (supposedly stupidly encoded at 10 Mbps).

Forgot about the PS3 upscaling ability....and I changed program to something that started off not looking very good and the HD light was off yet the avr indicator was still 1080p....don't feel like messing around with the output settings in the PS3 to see what it is actually outputting (assume if I did the BD playback resolution controls apps, too?) as I think you're right in any case.

Well on the PS4 app I get 1080p logo as when I watched Warehouse 13 however I get much jitter even with Hulu Plus on the PS4. Netflix on the PS4 however is so smooth no jitter. The ATV3 can also play Hulu Plus without jitter. The Fire TV plays Amazon Instant content like Warehouse 13 smoothly but I don't see the 1080p even though the picture is amazing.

I looked at the settings in the PS3, I had upscaling turned off and when watching a youtube video it says 720p in the avr.....doesn't make sense one app is being upscaled and the other isn't but that doesn't necessarily mean anything.

No jitter on Hulu Plus using the Fire TV app which is identical to the PS4 app. Actually now that I think of it all video apps jitter on the PS4 except Netflix which plays great and smooth.

Amazon's 2160p video is starting to materialize, if you have a player capable of playing it (pretty much only smart apps of 2014 4K TVs). It hasn't been announced yet, but there are some titles with "UHD" on the little diagonal banner on their upper left cover thumb. Some show that in the browser but not in the title's menu or vice-versa; only one title shows it in both. The UI has not been updated to indicate when you're getting it, so it never says anything more than "HD 1080p" and there's no other way to tell on my television (it'll tell me the resolution of video on any input but not for video from a smart app ). I'm fairly certain that Time Runners is 2160p (by the appearance of the video) and Vendetta is the only title with the "UHD" banner in both the browser and its title menu. Romeo + Juliet might be (Shakespeare's play staged in a modern setting with the original language, with Leonardo di Caprio and Claire Danes). Some other titles have the indicator but definitely aren't. I presume they'll get it straightened out by and by.

I thought Samsung had an exclusive on the initial launch? I'll try it today and see if it shows up. Thanks for the info
