Vudu 4k??

I have been watching Amazon 4K and was wanting to find some movies that are just coming out in 4K. VUDU was suggested and I have been playing around with it some. I have a wireless setup that the speeds will be from 17 up to 30 mbps. When doing VUDU's speed test (from the settings) it only shows only SD, HDX, but hot UHD.. The speedtest goes up to the top quick. It does not show UHD. Short of renting a 4K movie how would I know that I can get 4K. There were a few 4K films suggested that were free, but I have not found the 4K version of them to watch.

I have also tried the VUDU speed test that checks to see if I am 4K ready which shows a short movie. This movie never does anything, but a white screen.

You should be fine as long as your speeds are 17+ Mbps, VUDU states it only requires 11 Mbps for UHD although with overhead and network congestion it's always a good thing to be 15+ Mbps. I have found that the VUDU speed test via Google browser does not work.

Are you subscribed to VUDU? There is no cost but you need to have an account and add a credit card or PayPal.

I believe Brian gave you this link to test UHD using the movie Hidden. Follow the link and add it to your wishlist. Then you are able to go straight to the UHD file with your VUDU streaming app. The test film is only 3 minutes long.

I have set up an account with VUDU, but I have not added a credit card or Paypal.

I don't remember your setup but I just added the Pluto TV app to my Roku TV because they have a 4K channel. I do think that a lot of these services targeted 18 Mbps broadband not 24 Mbps because that speed is more common. Actually doing codec tests 11 Mbps can produce a decent 4K stream. I think there is too much thought about h264 which was probably used at first for 4K streaming. Many devices now support HEVC (h265) and VP9. My Roku TV only supports those two codecs for 4K. VP9 is a big win for a streaming service that doesn't want to pay the crazy royalties the HEVC group wants since VP9 is free. Also AV1 has been finalized and we'll probably soon be seeing TVs and boxes that support it and it too is royalty free. The last update to my Roku TV even supports WEBM 4K stream and Vorbis audio which can be surround (DD+ is another royalty issue).

On my laptop I was able to save both of the free 4K/UHD movies in my wishlist. The cover of these show UHD. When I go into VUDU on Sony 4K TV they do not show 4K or UHD on the cover nor is UHD an option when I go to more info.. I am guessing that VUDU is not recognizing my Sony as being 4K.

Edit: My Sony is 2015 and it is not recognized by VUDU per VUDU. Apparently I need version 4.1.36 or later and the version on my Sony is 3.1.07.

They updated the firmware for your Sony in March 2018. Do you have it installed?

I don't use the apps much on my 55x850c because it's my bedroom tv, but have you tried the fandango now app. It links UV and MA lockers and dose 4k, buy or rentals.

I hate I have to watch the 3D movies I own on VUDU off my 3D BD player because the TV app won't do it. But, most of my 3D viewing is off my projector, so it doesn't bother me that much.

As you are realizing sometimes SmartTV apps can only do so much especially if new or updated apps are not added.

For VUDU and the other streaming services I recommend either a Roku streamer like the Ultra or the more expensive Apple TV 4K.

I am wanting to sideload the new version of VUDU for my Sony. The latest version is 4.1.50 now instead of 4.1.36. The new version just came out yesterday. Is there any harm in doing 4.1.50 instead of 4.1.36.

I sideloaded the latest (4.1.50) version onto my Sony 4K TV and I can now watch 4K videos on it.
